I just got my Pioneer 747A DVD Player from the fantastic Home Cinema Heaven. I know a lot of people are interested in this player so I thought I would add my comments.
DVD Picture
Well this is simply fantastic! First disc I tried was “The Rock Criterion Edition”, which is one of my top DVD’s for Picture. The Rock always looked good on my old 626D, but did show a bit of grain on scenes that had less colour. On the 747A, the grain was non-existent! The picture was simply First-Class. Extremely Colourful, Sharp and very detailed.
I also tried a number of other DVD’s and the performance was just as good as showed in the the Rock. I had to find a DVD for my machine to fault on, so I searched all through., but couldn’t find one
Overall the picture is Sharp, Clean, Detailed, Colourful and at most times looks like a High Definition picture. Completely flattens my old machine and is probably on par with my friends Toshiba 900E.
I personally looked out for the well talked about Chroma problem, but I couldn’t seem to find any faults. However, I heard you can’t really see in on CRT TV’s!
DVD Sound (DD/DTS)
Movies sound on the Pioneer 747A is where I really got impressed. With my Pioneer 626D Dolby Digital and DTS both sounded very good, but at times you could hear at time where the sound just didn’t feel clean. The second I tested the sound on my 747A, it was so good it was like I’d now got 3x price speakers and a brand new amp! The clarity was amazing. Just hear those gunshots from Saving Private Ryan DTS…OMG amazing. I can now turn up my amp more and the sound is far cleaner than before!
CD-Audio
I think I’m running out of space here, so I’ll keep this short. CD-Audio was fantastic, clear and very well defined! Bass was far cleaner too! There I was thinking to myself, Did I just spend a few hundred on a dedicated CD Deck?
I also tried MP3 which was quite near to that of CD-Audio quality on this machine, but not quite there, but still excellent!
SACD/DVD-Audio
Unable to test, haven’t managed to buy 6 channel output leads and any titles yet. I just spent all my money on this machine!
Overall
This is one cracking Player, does everything I want. Has a Scart Loop-through for RGB, plays all formats! Good Build Quality, I could have swore my old 626 was made out of card board! Yea, I tried SVCD and they work great :-) Performance completely ****** over my old player. I now realise why I spent £750 on a DVD Player. Am I mad? I don’t think so!
Highs – Fantastic Picture Quality, Amazing Sound, Good as dedicated CD Player! Plays SVCD/MP3 etc etc
Lows – Layer Change still shows, Remote is a bit cheaply made!
Hope I haven’t gone on too long and you can understand the crap I’m talking. Just a long boring rushed review. Please feel free to ask questions and if there is anything you want me to test, let me know
