View Full Version : Marina and the Diamonds - Album at last

Been following Marina for what seems like years now, her Myspace page always adds a new song once in a while and frankly I cannot fault the music she makes (well her new Holywood song does not work for me if honest).

http://www.myspace.com/marinaandthediamonds

Her first album Family Jewels is out 15th Feb 2010, and she is also doing a bit of a tour (gladly one near me). She was part of the recent NME UK Tour, but I missed her there sadly (near the venue, but busy!), and also missed her by 10 minutes!! at this years Newcastle Evolution Festival (gutted! as que was bigger than expected).

So seeing her live will finally come to be in Feb next year, hopefully I have the album a few days before the tour kicks off.

Anyway musically I think she is cracking, but the videos so far have been just as good, some wonderful work put into them and really she has had a few singles out and none have exactly set the world alight sales wise. Still they are brilliant songs and videos.

This for me is one of the Songs and Videos of the year! I could watch it over and over.

I really like Mowgli's Road.

28-12-2009, 13:08
I never have yet heard any of her music on the radio, or seen a video on a muci station (I just assumed she had not sold well so far). I know she has not hit the charts either, which is a shame as I love her songs so far.

Toge Mowgli's Road is such a fun songs it is a shame that never made her a star, still who knows when an album comes out she may acctually sell some music. She will have my cash at least :D

if you want to inject her some cash, buy her EPs, they are very very good. hope she makes it big in 2010

RomerojpgX
29-12-2009, 13:03
Ohh I wanted to buy them all so far, sadly all so far have sold out! as no CD's were released! only downloads (urgghh) and Records, which I wanted, but they were so limited they sold out quickly as only 200 were released etc.. shame. She even signed all her last lot and kissed some haha

But I still refuse to support paying to Download music.

The girl's got a great set of lungs (;)), I certainly like most of what I've heard. I'm not keen on the Hollywood track though. It's kinda catchy but it has some irritating lyrics and really doesn't have her saying anything new; another in a long line of cynical songs about the ills of the entertainment industry. Difficult to know if it'll do well for her. I would have thought Mowgli's Road would make a great debut - very distinctive.

Why don't you like downloads by the way? Not clear if your problem is that you have to pay for them. I know you like to have your actual boxes and what not, but still, a sale's a sale.

I want to acctually own a product, a disc, a case, a sleave etc.. I love owning things.

Not low quality compressed downloaded digits, that many people pay more than an CD album to download, insanity :D

I could not think of anything worse than shelling out a tenner (even a few quid) on a download of a album, if there is no CD then I will refuse to even support an artist I guess, so keep making CD's or else  how is the singer gonna sign my "Digital Download" virtually!

Moldiver
05-01-2010, 10:30
Fair enough. Really don't notice the difference myself. All the stuff I've downloaded from the usual places are at 320kbps and sound really good to me. I can understand wanting to own the packaging etc, occasionally I pick up a vinyl, I much prefer the general feel of those over CDs, which more often than not turn up in cracked cases (no, I can't be arsed to replace them :D).

Anyway, I'll most certainly be picking up this album

RomerojpgX
05-01-2010, 16:20
Ohh I am sure I can get 320kbps if I looked about :D but hey I just love owning things to clutter up my space.

I have heard maybe half the songs on the album (I am sure a few will be re-tweeked before release) and on them songs alone the album is a must buy, so hope the rest of the tracks are as good.

The Holywood single is out 1st February on Vinyl 7 inch and signed by her etc.. shame I dont love that song and shame they upped the price now she has got some fame recently, the previous 7 inchers used to cost £5, now £7 after a smattering of media. Greedy.

The more I hear of her, the less I like her. Such a shame, I was impressed at the start. She talks so much about how she isn't interested in doing typical radio pop songs and wants to be individual, but the musical output certainly doesn't reflect that.

Listened to the Crown Jewels and Mowgli - she sounds uncannily like Jane Aire and the Belvederes, who knocked out some very respectable pop circa 1980. I think I heard a wee dash of Lene Lovich in there too. I wonder if they're related.

Been listening to her for a bit over the weekend and I'm not sure what to make of it all. All of her stuff is pretty good, Hollywood is extremely catchy but I'm not sure if it's something I could listen to a lot.

She looks very young as well, I couldn't believe she was 24 when I looked it up (I had to check it was OK to fancy her ;) :luv: )

EDIT: Dammit!! Can't get Mowgli's Road out of my head now

Her entire album is available to hear on her myspace page :)

http://www.myspace.com/marinaandthediamonds

I just got back from seeing her live in Newcastle, sadly the gig was awful (not her fault) an evil venue, appauling sound, dreadful lighting, no barriers so we just stood uncomfortable like morons, constant talking from the crowd and lots of drunks tossing bottles about (glass ones!), the floor was just a sea of glass!
I wanted to kill some of them idiots, saying "Can I push in front of you" then taking a massive strop and becoming abusive and violent when you say No! what do they expect the idiots, I waited an hour to be at the very front.

Still I was about 2 foot away from her, she looked nice and seemed good, just hard to enjoy a gig in such a hell hole of a venue, she deserved so much better.

Much better than I was expecting actually. Very catchy stuff with some nice production. Not sure she is 'stuck up' enough to be this years Florence but it's slighty more substantial than I thought it would be.

Have missed tickets for this tour but hopefully she puts some more dates on once the album has been out for a bit.

Hoping my CD arrives today

My CD was sent off on Tuesday, so it has to be here tomrow surley.

Snaps I took 200, sadly the light was so bad many images were a mess. I tried for a while and then sort of gave up as it was just way to dark to get anything with my camera I thought (mind you many work better than you see on a little camera LCD). Mind you the best images came out from catch-light from other peoples flashes :n0rty: love it when that happens. I even resorted to using my own flash on her (I hate flashing singers) so took a few with my own flash. I was really to close to flash her, litterally inches away from he at times and I would have blinded her.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y276/romerojpg/M1fb.jpg
This one was how dark it was! you can get arty I guess.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y276/romerojpg/M6FB.jpg
It only needed a little light and I could have got some amazing close shots as she looked right into the camera many times from right in front of me. The darkest gig I have ever been to maybe, I should have just kept snapping really, so my fault for kind of giving up. Hopefully next time she comes, it is in a real venue :D

and one small note, the gig was short - 10 songs, but damn many of them must have been very short, as it seemed to be over it 35 minutes! quick and little chatting thats for sure.

Thanks anyway :) I can see why they would all go, she is getting rather popular now, even if she has still not had a big hit in the charts (well Hollywood got to number 18 I think).

I still think "I am not a Robot was one of the best songs of last year, shame it only sold a tiny amount and never even charted. I hope she re-releases it now she is a little known, as I can see that song going bigger.

Was same for me. I didnt time it but it certainly felt short. I commented afterwards it must have been 50 mins max inc encore

We never even got an Encore haha she just said goodbye and went, if I never had the set list at my feet I would never have known 10 songs were sung. She never came on in Newcastle till about 9.55, as you can imagine pretty late for a gig. She had finished by 10.30.

and yes my Zavvi CD came as well, at least I can see if the rest of them songs are as good as the ones I have heard for over a year on Myspace in various forms :n0rty:

I stood around talking to somebody for about 20 mins and still managed to get home by 10:30, so I guess she was on from 9 to 9:50ish (was a Sunday though)
Mowgli's road was one of the encores, so I dont think we got any extra tracks, she just left and came back on to finish the setlist :)

Just finished listening to the album and so far I'm thinking it'll take a few more listens to get into half the songs. The first half is mostly great (Shampain isn't too strong). From "The Outsider" onward it's more miss than hit with few bright moments here and there; nothing instantly memorable. Winds up on a bit of a dull note with the last two tracks.

goonerforever
20-02-2010, 18:01
It's definitely not an instantly accessible album and it does end weakly but there are some great moments in the second half. Oh No! is probably the strongest track on the entire album

Moldiver

I think Mowgli's Road is the best song on the album. Still not totally taken with Oh No!, I'd put a few others above that. Liking Hermit the Frog quite a bit now, specially toward the end.

Overall a good album, most of the new to me tracks are not as good as all them oldies I know so well, but hey it is a solid album. As most say it is a grower, takes a while for me to get into it, but I am playing it once a day and getting used to the songs. Worth every penny of the under £4 I paid.

Thought she was totally fabulous actually. Way better than I was expecting, lots of crowd interaction, 4 costume changes, great vocals (even though she claimed to have a sore throat) and some quirky props thrown in for good measure. I did have great seats though, right above the stage and the front row of the circle, so I could see the whites of her eyes - maybe that helped.

Very impressed.

For me the other day in Newcastle it was 9.10, and she stopped at 10.15, not exactly a long session sadly :( I wanted way more than that.

Mind you she looked absolutely mind bogglingly beautiful in the dress she was wearing for us lot, pretty damn hot stuff. If she wears that slinky black dress, prepare yourself to be in awe!

I wish I had took more photos, but security was being an idiot and putting his hand in front of my camera, git! still got 400 haha sneaky. She deserves to be photographed, she just looks so perfectly photogenic dressed up with the lights on her and her hair blowing with her fan :)

Good singing as well :D she is getting better live and she suits a bigger stage, with a fan and just something to do and play with (Pom Poms). Cannot really say much bad about her now, and cannot wait to see what she does next. Hopefully more of the same as really I love the first album, so album 2 I await :)

May as well toss in a shot of her, see what I mean about the fan blowing her hair, really makes for an interesting look.

Hmm, turned that off half way through. She's on odd one alright. It took me ages to really like her debut album. I've since waived some of my previous comments in this thread. That album really grew on me, and I enjoy most of the tracks now.

One thing that she is doing is branching off into two people.
Marina, and her alter ego dance woman "Electra Heart" the one with blonde wig.

Not sure how it will work, maybe there will be 2 discs on the new album, one with classic Marina and one with the Electra dance versions/songs. Makes more sense that way. She has been pushing her alter ego for a while now on her site, so she must be doing something with it.

I quite like this new stuff :) Definitely change, but I'm enjoying it.

Agreed - she does look stunning in the video too.

Better in my opinion by a mile, an acoustic version of that dance track. Shame the dance track is the first single. Still each song is getting a video and will be put together into a movie/story set in the 70's about Electra Heart, so does make you wonder how its all gonna turn out. Guess we will have to wait for part 3 :n0rty:

Marina has also tweeted about her next tour

Thinking of performing songs from Electra Heart in decaying ballrooms all over the world next year... If your town has a ballroom, please Tweet me its name and location

How odd
