After reading Narshty's review a few weeks ago I thought that I'd buy a copy of "Le Trou" from Criterion. It's a basic prisoner escape movie, but I was overwhelmed by just how powerful a story it was. Unlike most flashy Hollywood versions of this basic theme, Le Trou depicts the escape attempt in an ultra-realistic manner. The amount of time that you spend with the characters and the gritty detail of each part of their intricate plan to escape sucked me so far into the plot that I completely forgot that I was watching a film. An absolute marvel of a film that I would urge you all too wacth if you find an opportunity. The ending was devastating, but then it fits with the general tone of the film. And to think that one of the main charcaters was one of the genuine participants in the real-life escape upon which Le Trou is based...astonishing.

Read Narshty's review and then buy this. Film-making at its best.

Well, ta very much. :)

Talk about a final twist, eh, Tristan? ;) Had to pick my jaw up off the floor.

How about a link (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?page=Review&id=605&story=2722)?

My head is still spinning and I finished watching it over an hour ago. It's a real shame that most people will never have seen this, as it really is vastly superior to even the likes of The Great Escape. It's certainly the most engaging film I've watched since Rear Window. You won't get much higher praise than that from me! :)

The French seem to have cornered the market for superlative prison escape films. It's dificult to think of finer examples than Le Trou, A Man Escaped and La Grande Illusion.

I couldn't agree more. I haven't bought the Criterion DVD (yet) but I caught Le trou the last time it was on British TV - late one Saturday night on BBC2, nearly twenty years ago. Despite not finishing until well past midnight, it held me on the edge of my seat.

Totally agree about the first two, but I think it's undervaluing La Grande Illusion just a tad to describe it as "a prison escape film"!
