did a search, couldn't see this onfo anywhere.

Just read that Akira is being released as a 2 discer here in the UK on March 18th.
Anyone know any info about it?

Cheapest (according to dvdpricecheck) on R2 is a tad under 15squids.

All DVDTimes seem to say is it's getting a release. No specs.

last time I read about it, there would be 3 releases or something, an SE, regular one, and another SE later in the yr...

I have a review copy of the 2 disc set, so if you have any specific questions then feel free to ask.

how does the transfer look? (have you seen the R1? if so how does it compare)
any of the extras worthy of a mention?

No, unfortunately not. Only about 10% of review DVDs come with the packaging. I only have a couple of amarays with the discs. But it did contain some stickers!

I do have the R1 version (the tin) and the transfer is of equal quality. There seems to be slightly less in terms of extras and there is a subtitle distraction which you will be able to read about when my review goes online at The R2 Project.

Will do. It won't be online for a while yet as the PR company want it held back until a specific date.

Tristan.

Was mainly wondering about pic and sound quality, wether it's got any cuts, quality of the subs etc...
Extras are nice, as is a good package (so to speak), but aren't high on my list of priorities.

If you had to spend the money yourself, and they both cost the same, would you go for the R1 or R2?

Tristan H:

Is that date before or after release?

If it's true what they said before that the Digipack is limited I would like to preorder but without a review I wouldn't do that.

Are the "easter eggs" good for nothing or are they "good" features?

Personally I don't get why the press release is mentioning that disc one has one "easter egg" and disc 2 has 2( ? ). Easter eggs aren't features which you announce. They are little things which the owner of the DVD can find out about on his/her own and announcing them as features defeats their purpose. Give me proper features any day.

Assuming that there is an English Audio track I'm interested to know if its the original (dire) english dub or the new one that was shown last month at the SF Film Festival in London (perhaps it has both).

Before any body starts posting suggestions that Im a heretic, I agree original language track with subtitles is (usually) by far the best way to watch foreign language films. I'm just interested to know whether the new english langauge dub is being held back for a later Collectors Edition/Special Edition or even a Special Collectors edition ;) .

From the look of the specs i've seen it has the new 5.1 mix from pioneer (english) and the 1987 2.0 english mix and the original japanese 2.0 mix

The £17.99 was a tin version, i preordered it back in december (i think) but it seems to have been postponed, i received this from them the other day

Hello faithful customer,

For your information the special tin 2 Disc Akira you ordered will not be supplied / released at this time. Unfortunately, we have been required to change that version to TBA (To Be Announced) on our website until further notice. The good news is, a 2 disc version for Akira is being released and it is on our website now for £14.99! We didn't want to take liberties by cancelling your order for you, but we felt we should at least notify of this change and give you the opportunity to switch your order to the cheaper version. We have just changed this info on our site so we wanted to give you the heads up before the rest of our customers catch up with this news.

Please accept our apologies for any grief or inconvenience caused.

Warm regards

I've changed the order to the non tin 2 disk edition.

I'd guess they were told the tin would be released at the same time as the 2 disk edition but were misinformed.

Not that i'm to bothered, i'm happy to just be able to get an R2 version of Akira with (hopefully) the new dub :)

The English dub is pretty good, found reading the subs and trying to view the astonishing visuals at the same time distracting.

So theres 2 2discs versions coming out? a tin and digipack version? so theres no single disc being released?

Tristan H:
Read your review at: www.r2-dvd.org.
Nice work.

However, on the subtitles subject: Do you know if the translation is the correct literal japanese or if its the english dub titles?

Also, is there any way you can check if the Swedish subtitles are hard of hearing as well or if those are only for the UK ( english ) speaking?

There was supposed to be 2 easter eggs on the DVDs. One on each. You don't mention those in your review. Were they not there?

Thanks

Ericf

how come u didnt mention the orig dub ?

Ericf

I asked Trisan H about the other subtitle languages on the DVD and if they were also of the Hard of Hearing kind.

Since I'm Swedish I asked about that and he made a check and found out that it doesn't seem to be hard of hearing subtitles.

I am not sure about the rest of the subs but I think these are OK. All except for the english track.

How ironic!

Both the new american dub and the original dub ( I think? Might be the new in DD 2.0 ).

Please do note that I'm unsure of this. The Australian master MIGHT be identical but there are no firm facts telling me that the DD 2.0 English track is the old dub. Tristan H doesn't mention the 2.0 track at all. We can always hope.

I'm one for diversity and I don't really know what a DD 2.0 track is there for if there's a DD 5.1 unless it's a different track. Both are downmixed to stereo when using the analog output to speakers.
