View Full Version : Is there anyway to tell what day a picture was taken from a jpeg
Hi hoping for a bit of help with with some jepgs. My car went into a service last week and has come out with some scratches down one side, the dealership are saying that the driver took some photos of the scratches and will send them over to me but they were on the car when he went back to the dealership. He has sent some photos of someone elses car:lol: and when i phoned him back apologised and said he sent the wrong ones. If i click on properties it opens up and shows a date it was created, would that be the date the picture was taken or when it is transferred to the computer. Is there any bits of software that can help or determine when it was taken.
thanks in advance.
The details tab when you right click and go properties should tell you (assuming the exif details are still within the file, and were written by the camera)
thankyou, will do that when he sends the new ones over.
Just so you're aware, it is quite easy to modify the Exif data and aside from that it is dependant upon the camera itself having been set up correctly with date & time ( including BST/GMT & maybe timezone ).
If you suspect an incorrect date/time, you have to look for other clues like rain/sun, cloudy/clear sky, shadow length/definition etc
Date created in the file properties should be the date taken, though if it's been edited it might be the date it was edited and saved.
However, if the photo contains the EXIF data (you can see this in Win XP via right click > Properties > Summary tab > Advanced button), there should be an entry for "Date Picture Taken".
This is all assuming the camera's date and time is set correctly.
edit:
kinda beaten to it, and good point about modifying EXIF too.
