View Full Version : [Multi] Dante's Inferno (EA Games - 12/2/10)
Just seen a feature for this on LIVE. Looks very God of War which is no bad thing, so here's hoping this is a suitable alternative. I love a good ol' hack n slash game, and this has a fabulous setting (the hell levels were my favourite in GOW), and big ol' demon bosses too. Awesomeness.
Some info..
Dante’s Inferno will take gamers to the western world’s most definitive view of the afterlife as created in the 13th century by the Italian poet Dante Alighieri in part one of his epic classic, “The Divine Comedy.”
Dante’s Inferno tells an adapted story that focuses on delivering a blockbuster 3rd person action game experience while bringing Alighieri’s depiction of Hell to the medium. Players assume the role of Dante, who descends into Hell after returning home to find his beloved Beatrice murdered, with Lucifer seducing her soul into the underworld. Dante sets out on a rescue mission to save Beatrice, but he soon realizes he is also in Hell to face his own demons and ultimately to redeem himself.
I look forward to the 'lust' level. ;) Trailer looks mighty tasty too..

It's out on the 12 Feb 2010, according to the EA website, on 360, PS3, and PSP.
That's look really nice, just about the only thing missing on the 360 is a God of War type game for me.

Had a go on this at the Eurogamer expo. It's a shameless mix of God of War and Devil may cry. Looked O.K. but God of War 3 eclipses it in just about every way possible.
EA should delay it to avoid get slaughted in head to head reviews.
Yeah, it's probably going to be overshadowed somewhat, but it looks quite polished, so I hope it holds its own.
I loved the GOW and Devil May Cry series when I had a PS2. We just need a decent alternative on the 360, as the last DMC game was a tad lackluster IMO.

the game looks really good (and by the same people as Dead Space)
it would a shame if its released as same day as GoW as the ps3 zealots will try to smear the game before its out
Ha for a second I thought this had been reviewed and got a mighty 2 out of 10!
Looks at least a 5 to me :)

Altered!
Anyway, 5? You not like these types of games or something, it looks way better than that - but time will tell I suppose.
I had a watch on the xbox live bit yesterday afternoon and thought it looks pretty amazing! The fighting looks a little on the repetitive side but those boss battles (esp the Egyptian god one in the demo whos name ive forgotten!) look pretty damn awesome....

There's a suspicious lack of blood for a game based in Hell. :suspect:
God of War III wins on that criteria alone.
PS3 demo for this is out on December 10th. 360 demo arrives on December 24th.

I've been tracking this for a while and is one of my more anticipated games of 2010.
Worried that it might play like DMC though. hard to tell from the videos.

From my brief go it plays more like DMC than GOW.
From my brief go it plays more like DMC than GOW.
I didn't get on with the last DMC, although I enjoyed the series till then. The last was too fussy: miss a jump, fall in a pit you have to spend ages clearing the enemies, go back, miss the jump again..argh. The combat got a bit repetitive, but the bosses were spectacular.
An amalgamation of the two can be no bad thing really. I just worry about the replay value of these things as they tend to be great short fix games.
Just found footage on youtube - looks awesome

December 10, 2009 - PlayStation 3 owners will be receiving a special edition of Electronic Arts' Dante's Inferno, set for release on February 9, 2010.
Titled "Dante's Inferno - Divine Edition," this new package is exclusive to Sony's console, and will replace the regular game sku at retail for the same $59.99 price tag. The pack includes developer commentaries, a Wayne Barlowe digital art book, the soundtrack to the game, and a digital copy of the complete Longfellow translation of Dante Alighieri's Inferno.

I think it would be better if, in the bit when when you find your missus with her tits out and the priest with the crucifix buried in his eye socket, they'd just gone the whole hog and stuck it up his bum or something. If you're going to be emptily provocative, you might as well stick things up people's bums.

Is it a piece of cake on PSN to create a US account for dloading US demos? Sounds like I just create a new account but choose a different region from the drop down list?
Edit: Nm, created (easily) and downloading...
Strange how EA seem to be pushing this hardest on PS3. You think they'd be targeting 360 gamers with "Hey want to play God of War on you system, well here you go!" what with PS3 gamers actually getting the genuine article shortly after the release of this.

Played most of the demo and was fairly underwhelmed, didn't even make it to the end of the demo. Perhaps it's just not my sort of thing, though I loved the first God Of War.
Demo is out now on the 360 if you are interested.
Wohoooooooo! flange and boobies!
Yeah, major boobage alert in the cutscenes, ya pervs! ;)
Anyway, just had a quick go - like it a lot. Shame about the lack of blood splatter (the blood just disolves in mid-air), but it plays nicely, if exactly as expected (God Of War meets Devil May Cry), and it looks pretty. Even the health fountains are very GOW/Prince of Persia. Thought the first boss battle was a tad bland compared to the sheer madness of Bayonetta, but the game got better as it went along. It's got quite some competition with both that and the new GOW on the way, but still seems good hack n' slash fun. I like the option of using either dark and light powers, and choosing to save or punish souls. I'll probably turn to the darkside. ;)
Pretty good overall!
Is it as difficult as Devil May Cry?
(your perception that Devil May Cry being 'difficult' is irrelevant, merely after a comparison)

Well, put it this way. It was an early level, it plays very similarly, and you'll build up different button combos along the way, making for more complex moves. Found the first boss quite easy, considering it was little more than slash, slash, block and repeat. I played it on the hardest available (although, looks like there is 4 levels of difficulty and you only get the first two). So will the entire game be as difficult? Hard to tell from the demo, but probably. And yes, I found DMC difficult FWIW, but mainly as I kept getting bloody lost and got fed up with fiddly jumps, rather than enemy smashing. This is far more GOW though, including those split-second hitting the right button moments you have to pull off in order to kill the larger enemies. The sound design, setting and scale is the same too - they've just cashed in on it.
Forgot to say before, there's quite a neat power attack where you throw these crosses of light at the enemy. It looks kewl anyway.

Will wait for this to be a bit cheaper, similiar to GOW with the monster riding and crazy big enemies but didn't seem quite as enjoyable or as comfortable to control as God of War.
Really enjoyed the demo, very God of War and as a 360 owner that is no bad thing!
Looking forward to it now.
Enjoyable demo, much more fun than the last DMC game, and more comparable with the GoW series. Too many combo moves to memorise for my aging brain but the difficulty level seems ok even for us mere mortals that stick to the basics.
Not sure yet if it'll be a first-day purchase, depends if the good January releases continue to be fun to play through to February. I suspect Mass Effect 2 will still be occupying my gaming-time.

I was looking forward to this, but now I've played the demo I'm not so sure. Love the presentation and the way it looks, but it seems to control a little haphazard for me, perhaps that's because I'm unused to playing games like this.
Really got on with bayonetta though.

A disappointing 6/10 from Eurogamer (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/dantes-inferno-review).
They did give Dead Space a 7/10 however, but I think I'll still hold off and get GoW 3 first and pick this up when it hits the bargain prices, as I did enjoy the demo.
That is disappointing. Not that bothered with Mass Effect 2 & Bioshock 2 just around the corner. Plenty to keep me occupied until it hits the bargain bins.

Not really got any problems with it other than the static camera can be useless at times.
I'm happy with it as its essentially God of War for the 360, which seeing as I dont have a PS3, is pretty handy.

Any indication of length at this stage? I've only got it for a week.

hmv have recently been guaranteeing a trade-in price of £30 for 2 weeks after release for a few key titles, this and Mass Effect 2 being a couple of them, making it possible to be paid for renting them?
Anyhoo, started playing this last night & it's okay but seriously it makes The Great Giana Sisters look like original IP by comparison. Hoping to blast through it over the weekend before BioShock2, then AvP and Heavy Rain the week after that.
Played this for about 3hrs last night, good laugh, highly stylised but did get really annoyed with pointless QTE's and dtupid swining platform'esque sections.
A solid rental, would be a bit peeved if I'd paid £40 for it.

completed it and overall its average, lots of game design elements that make the game dull, have no idea why the designers thought it would a good idea to include those. QTE are the tool of lazy game developers, can't be bothered to think of good ideas? make the gamer hammer the button or play "simon says"

I didnt do a hell of lot of exploring, hence I didn't get the shades and relics achievements - I notched up 7.5hrs total after spending an hour in the gates of hell challenge.
Annoyingly lost this on wave 48 due to time, fuming!
Completed it last night, after 2 evenings of play. Where does it tell you how long it took you? I'd estimate I spent around 7-8 hours for the story mode & then another 40 minutes (that i did see) in the gates of hell challenge. It was enjoyable. It's probably a 7.5/10 for me, so not a game I expect to be in my Top 10 of the year. I've earned around 65% of trophies but won't be playing through again for the others as I'm trading it in for BioShock2 tomorrow.

gates of hell was easy as you get extra time by punishing or absolving (or whateve) certain enemies.

Completed this and it's very much a 6 out of 10. It was enjoyable enough and I did enjoy the combat but by the end of it they were running out of ideas. I did really like the B movie vibe of the game though I get the feeling the developers were treating it more seriously than I was taking it. It was so trashy and that only really added to the fun. The last hour was utter utter ****. Who thought it would be fun to include challenge trials as an actual part of the main game ? That should have been an extra, it was just lazy in the extreme and really started to annoy me after the first couple. It was like they couldn't be bothered and by the end of the game I was glad I had finished it. Got 700g in one run through and I can't be arsed trying to mop up the rest, back to HMV it goes to get that 30 quid trade in as quick as possible.

I agree also, the last hour was a borefest, just where you wanted something spectacular you get a series of boring fights, and there are loads.

Glad I wasn't the only one
Infact the only thing I did get on my first playthrough was maxing out the unholy path and reaching unholy level 7. Some collecting to be done on my next run through.
Yeah I went unholy on first play through also :)
Was good to be bad!
Don't worry fellas you're not alone. I completely messed up that Virgil achievement as I only realised very close to the end  Couldn't be bothered playing through it again though. Also remember that you need to absolve certain people for a few achievements so take note of the names if you are on 'punish' route which is what I took for most of the game.
Also, if you are close to reaching the max unholy level and have completed the game, just do the Gates Of Hell and punish/absolve the enemies in that. Easier to get the achievements that way rather than having to play through the game again (though I guess if you need to play through the game again for other achievements it doesn't matter too much)

I'm not sure that the levels acquired by doing this apply to the main save. I did this to hit level 7 holy and then when I restarted the main game in resurrection mode I was back where I was when I finished the main game.

Yeah you're right, I forgot to mention that. It's only handy if you're at level 5 or 6 I'd say as you will naturally get there in the end for that achievement. I suppose having to buy all of the magic would require you to do a new playthrough as well. There's no way I would have gotten there on the Gates Of Hell for what I had left to do on Holy.
Comically I missed the 'Send Charon back into the abyss' achievement, how I do not know!

Played it back through again to get the coins and commentaries and had to start a third playthrough to completely max out my levels. Nearly missed out on the Gates of Hell one, found absolving/punishing enemies only seemed to give me as much time as I used on doing it to them, ended up beating the last room with about 4 seconds to go!

This game is annoying the hell out of me. Got stuck in Greed after a switch decided to stop responding (known issue with a patch on its way) so had to restart to my previous save. Was hoping to finish the game on hellish but had to move down a difficulty level, now it is far too easy and the health bar barely moves when hit.
My main annoyance about the game is you can clear an area of enemies and collect all the items, then if you end up dying you have to restart that area again and all the items are there to be collected again - very very annoying, and after dying at the same bit a few times you just want to give up with the collecting and move through the game as fast as possible. Was looking forward to this game simply for the environment, but little things like this really spoil it.
So 1000/1000 and back to HMV for a tasty £30 trade-in :D
