Where did the horses come from?
Why's it called Planet of the Apes when it's more like 'small town of the Apes'
etc....
It's not a film to start picking faults at. Soon as you do the thing falls apart faster a house of cards.
Maybe the horses were already on that planet - it was able to support life.
Who knows - we are after all trying to analyse a Sci-Fi film!
I mentioned at the time that one of the apes gets insulted at being called a monkey by a human and puts him right. Why does he even know what a monkey is?
The film is as dumb as a Farrelly Bros production, but nowhere near as entertaining. Utter tosh.

... and is the whole reason for the film that he's going to get a monkey?

This is how you spank the monkey! (http://www.vectorlounge.com/04_amsterdam/jam/flamjam.html)
As I appear to have the desire for an ultimate flaming this afternoon how about this:
TPOTA was evolving at exactly the same rate as the Earth all be it in a parrallell universe. A 'Smart' chimp crosses the space/time continueum and lands on TPOTA. From this moment onwards the 'Smart' chimp begins to educate all other primate species except Man who becomes more and more supressed as Primate intelligance rises. All other species would evolve as on Earth and only the roles of Primates were reversed.
Arch Stanton is right though. Of all the plot holes to pick this is probably the easiest one to defend. What about language, not only did the Apes choose to speak a human understandable language they picked English, one of the most difficult languages on the Earth. You could argue that the 'Smart' chimp understood English, but he certainly couldn't speak it in order to teach the others.
Better English than Esperanto
