Did anyone else see this programme last night?

I just happened to catch it on Channel 4 at about 10pm, I'm sure it'll be available on 4oD for a while. If you didn't see it then basically it was a documentary following the lives of a bunch of people who were taking steps in order to change their appearance particularly with regard to their ethnicity.

I was staggered at some of the comments coming from some of these people. They had such distorted views of themselves and in some cases sounded quite unwell. It just seems such a shame that people are willing to have serious, life risking surgery in the name of what is essentially vanity/prejudice. Some of the comments were ludicrous, the glamour girl prior to her nose operation saying "I don't really care about dying, just please don't make me look ugly whatever you do, don't make me look ugly". Post nose op she was saying that people now give her far more respect and that she is now able to walk into Waitrose with her head held high and that the new nose makes her look far more wealthy.:nuts:

The surgeons who perform the work always seem like really revolting people too, they feed directly into people's insecurities and are more than happy to operate on people who seem (to me at least) to have deep psychological issues as long as the money keeps coming.

It was really sad to see some of these people trying to explain their motivations. Up until now it's not something I had really given a great deal of thought to aside from the whole Michael Jackson spectacle (who of course gets a couple of mentions).

Really crazy stuff.

Yeah I saw that and it was crazy. The girl who had the nose op was ridiculously shallow. Going off on a tangent a wee bit, but was shocked by the Asian guy who had racial abuse shouted at him by people driving by whilst standing outside the shop being filmed. Wonder which part of Kent that was - looked awful!

I saw the episode from last week but missed this one, will check it out online. Last week they showed all sorts, people having legs broken so that a rod could be inserted and ratcheted to extend and make them taller. Looked like a very long and painful process. There was also a Jamaican woman having breast reduction and lift and Korean men having a penis extension and girth added.

They all seemed to be motivated by a perceived prejudice for whatever reason. I don't understand why people put them through life endangering operations for cosmetic reasons.

I know, I was completely stunned. Maybe I'm a bit naive but I didn't think that kind of thing went on a great deal, he didn't seem surprised and just seemed to accept it as something that goes on all the time. I guess it provides you with a little bit of insight into why the individuals from the documentary have some of the motivations/insecurities that they do.

I never really see or experience racism in my day to day life and I always find it really shocking to think that in this day and age there are people with those kind of xenophobic/bigoted views.

If anyone found Barbie girl to be attractive then you can see her getting naked and oiled up on Bangbabes most nights. I found it amusing when she mentioned she could go into Waitrose now! It is quite sad to see how these people have have such a distorted view of the world. I was quite shocked to see how quickly some random person shouted racial abuse at the guy, they had just arrived, and what seemed like the middle of the day.

We caught some of last weeks and saw this weeks too.

We both said these are people with mental problems! They all seem to be fixated on some part of themselves they don't like and want it to be more "Western".
One of the surgeons has been on both programmes basically saying we will be a homogonised people one day and this helps towards that. I'm pretty sure we will all be a genetic mix one day but surgery is not going to make that happen, it's purely cosmetic!

The only good thing I've seen on the programme so far is the guy who went to see about the leg extension operation and decided against it and seemed to realise he was actually ok as he was. He was short but he was well proportioned otherwise and having his legs extended would have just been odd.
