View Full Version : [PC] Torchlight - Action RGP from Runic games
No thread about this so I thought I would let people know.
Torchlight (http://www.torchlightgame.com/) is a new game due out tomorrow from a new company called Runic games. Its a game in the tradition of the Diablo series, basically you kill things and take their stuff
There is a story line to a final boss followed by a infinite dungeon if you want. You also get a pet to help with the killing and maiming. The pet can carry stuff, go back to sell your loot and cast spells to help as well as fight. There is a fishing minigame to get pet boosts.
There will be a fully featured editor released (later this week) which is exactly the same tool the developers used to create the game in the first place. Everything will be moddable. Although Runic will not be hosting mods there is two sites set up to cater for this - http://www.runicgamesfansite.com/ and http://www.torchlightinsider.com/.
The game is available via download (although there is a disc version out in the new year) for $20 or about £15. it is available (http://www.torchlightgame.com/gamenews/2009/10/20/torchlight-partners/) from Runics own site, Perfect World (their publisher) or your favourite game downloader.
The game is designed to have very low system requirements, it can be run on a net book and shaders were only implemented about 3 weeks ago. The devs are currently very active on the official forums and some people on there have published reviews of the game, mainly fans who got press copies (lucky people).
Runic is developing a MMO in the same universe as Torchlight, due out in 18-24 months.

Looks like a 100% Diablo clone, but still could be fun to play and it looks decent enough. Is there going to be a demo?
To answer my own question:
Q: Will there be a demo?
A: Yes, we will release a try-before-you-buy demo which should be available for download from a multitude of sites.
Yes, the demo will be the full game but limited to (I believe) 2 hours of play. After that you can buy an unlock key to get the full game.
Some videos
Character classes Alchemist (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huLl5Xzu2Aw&feature=related), Vanquisher (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXNzJ9KYlWw&feature=related) and Destroyer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NhrNZZf-dOk&feature=related).
Editor demo, part 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hu1KMHtAJsY&feature=related), part 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMqkJD7fQq8&feature=related) and part 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4y63KvHOWU&feature=related), although they have had to change the name of the editor since these were released (due to copyright).
And finally a marketing video for Torchlight here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2SNjfah3as) (possibly NSFW, click with care). BTW one of the girls, the one in the white top I believe, is a staff member at Runic.
TitanQuest is a nice quite modern Diablo clone too. The only problem is it gets boring quite fast after having played something like World of Warcraft for a few years. has me quite worried about the upcoming Diablo 3! Hopefully it's co-op play will keep it interesting.
Should probably have mentioned this yesterday but I was busy playing :D
The game is available. If you want to try the demo is unfortunately not available from Runic but there is a demo from a number of the other sellers including Steam. I know the Steam demo is the first few levels, enough experience to get you up to about level 7 or 8.
As for the game, it is a blast. Lots of death and mayhem and a moderate amount of loot . The game play is smooth and the characters feel like they have weight. All in all well worth the money.
Sounds good.. I'd never heard of it until I saw 'Diablo' in a sub title on Eurogamer.
I've been itching for another Diablo game for a while. Titan Quest had some nice ideas, but it didn't quite have that magic Diablo did.
I believe Torchlight was started by Flagship studios who have since gone under. That studio was formed by ex blizzard employees, some of whom were responsible for Diablo, so it's certainly got some good pedigree behind it.

Including the Diablo composer composing the Torchlight music, I believe. It adds a lot to the game.
I'm loving this game. Lots of looting mayhem and bashing fun!

How big is the game? Is it comparable to Diablo, or smaller? The full price seems to suggest something's lacking somewhere.

Is it download only? I'd like to buy it for my dad as he loves Diablo and those sort of hack + slash romps, but I'd prefer to give him a physical copy than a burnt DVD.
Again, to answer my own question. A boxed-edition is planned for early next year. Shame it's so far away now the game is out.
Dno, about the game length they say:
Q: How long does it take to complete the game?
A: Completing the main storyline takes about 10 to 20 hours. The main dungeon has over 30 levels, composed of seven distinct tile sets. However, levels that use the same tile set can be created using different rules and themes – so even though two levels might share the same tile set, they might be quite different from one another.
This game is lovely, give it a go. Good thing about the demo is that it saves your character if you end up buying the full game.

I really liked the demo. Tempted to pick it up, but I've got so many games to play at the minute.

Just to add...
I've been playing the demo, and thought it was a great game and worth a purchase. I've just upgraded to the full version (on Steam), and all you do is add it to your basket in the Steam store, pay, then start your game up again. No extra download time was needed. After that, it's no longer a demo, and you can carry on with your demo character - simple as that! I hadn't read anything that made it clear how you did that on Steam, so hope this helps someone.
I think it's nailed a lot of the best bits of Diablo, and it's the same in many ways, but still different enough to seem fresh. Off to play some more... ;)
I've been reading some odds and ends about this today, and i've not really found any negative comments about it at all.. Those that have tried all seem to know what they're in for (Diablo clone), and all seem to really enjoy it.
I also like the 'retirement' idea. When you're done with a character, you can 'retire' them, and pass down various attributes to a new character to save you from starting afresh.. A good idea that.
I do love it when a nice little game springs up from nowhere. :)
It's very good! Holds my attention much more than Titans Quest does somehow.
Manual here (http://www.fileshack.com/file.x/15554/Torchlight+Manual) (Fileshack)
, it really is Diablo, gameplay, interface, shortcuts and all. It's like slipping on an old pair of shoes.
I love some of the little touches they've added, especially the way you can load up your pet and send him off to town to sell all your crap for you.
I've only played for ~45mins, but I'm sold.. I need to clear a little back log, but then I'll grab the full thing. For £15, you can't really go wrong.
It seems this is an update version of a Game called Fate released about 4 years ago. I'd never heard of Fate but I'm definitely gonna get me this Torchlight!

Tried the demo, loved it so bought it from Runic Games own website for £12.28.
Tried the demo and really loved it, but I also got recommended to download a demo of Titan Quest.
Played them both and now I dunno which one to get. :(
I enjoyed both Titan Quest, and the addon.. I thought it was a bloody good stab at an action RPG, which lifted some good bits from Diablo and dropped in a few of their own ideas as well. It didn't quite have the same satisfaction that Diablo did, but still very good.. It looked great as well, and still does.
It's a much bigger game than I think Torchlight is as well, so needs more investment to get the most from it.
It's a real shame that Ironlore went under, as I reckon a proper sequel to Titan Quest could've been very good indeed.
I bought TitanQuest and Expansion for £3.60 in direct2drives recent offer and I found it pretty dull tbh. This Torchlight seems more fun to me. It could just be as Dno says that Titanquest takes more getting into - I gave up after a couple of hours. Torchlight is just awesome fun from the first click. :)
I think the main difference is that with Titan Quest it takes a while to go up ~10 levels, and get to the point where you feel like a 'don't **** with me' kind of warrior.
With Torchlight, that satisfaction with its pools of blood and what not, is a bit more immediate.
I was trying to work out why I liked the Torchlight demo more than Titan Quest. Titan looks better graphically and the ancient Greek setting is very cool but it was definitely missing something. Probably the fact that when you whack someone in torchlight with your sword they go flying. Fun! Anyway Torchlight has been purchased. I can see how it could work as a very good MMO.

Whilst the art is great, the game itself it just too similar to Fate, which was created by the same guy, and a game that i played to death.
If i hadn't got so sick of Fate then this would be ace, but as it is, its just more of the same that i have already played, just with nice graphics...but then i spose thats most games nowadays...

Still loving this. The Alchemist can pretty much handle anything, can't he? I can summon three imps, three zombies and some skeleton archers and if I give my pet a fish I promptly own the boss mobs without me doing much of anything. If I do decide to start throwing spells around then it's pew pew pew and done within seconds.
http://i399.photobucket.com/albums/pp77/dannywonderful/pewpew.gif
Got bored of this. Not too bad overall except the missions are repetitive and they keep sending you back to places you've already been i.e clear 10 levels of a dungeon and a quest from someone else involves you going to level 3 of that same dungeon to kill something.
Died a few times due to the silly potion system. You assign potions to 1 and 2 for example, go into battle, you health drops to near zero in 1 hit and you press 1 or 2 to use a potion. Nothing happens as you haven't got any. Would be nice if it didn't show a slightly faded image of a potion flask which gives the impression you still have some left!
Got to Lev13 but still finding nothing useful. One weapon with hitpoints of 204 but that was for Lev14. Most spells are ineffective after a while and the dog is a pain in the neck constantly running into battle and doing very little.
Got no idea what quest I'm on either. There are about 3 portals open and beats me which quest each corresponds to. Just neverending dungeon / mine levels with the odd secret one thrown in.

I'm generally enjoying it - but finding the need for potion-spamming annoying - I'm spending 90%+ of my gold on healing pots (Playing a Destroyer on Hard, currently lv12). Was playing dual-wield, then with a 2-hander, but now going to try with a shield, to see if that helps much...
IMHO, a few tweaks could have improved this - potions should have a short cooldown, with damage reduced a bit to compensate, and HP should regenerate when out-of-combat
But it's still pretty enjoyable and highly polished - worth a play
Think the HP does go up out of combat but very slow. I had a bit of red appear after standing to one side for a bit.
Think it's more like Sacred 2 than Diablo although at least in this, the enemies don't constantly chase you down.
Don't like the item ID either. Very hard to pick up a specific item when you hold down ALT to view everything on a screen.
Way too linear as well. There's generally one set path through most locations or a couple of routes that ultimately end up pretty much going to the same place (could be wrong here?)
Nice not needing a Horadic Cube in order to merge say cracked skulls etc into flawed skulls, skulls, perfect skulls etc.
When you say it sends you back to an area you've cleared before to do a quest... according to the manual a mob with a red aura around him is a quest mob and if you don't have a quest to kill him it's a good idea to portal out and pick it up at that point.
You can also control your pets stance and he is apparently (though I've not tried it yet) a lot more useful after you've changed him into other creatures with the fish.
What a strange sequence of events for me. I'm not a gamesplayer at all- in fact I think apart from being strong armed into the odd games of Pro Evo or Mario Kart when round at mates the last game I played was jet set willy when I was a kid (and even then I wasn't that into it).
So I get an Ipod Touch, I download Chronicles of Inotia from the iTunes store (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=55) (sorry don't know how to affiliate directly to the game) on a whim, spend 15 hours playing that over a few nights, then come on here cos I was bored. See this thread, watch the youtube preview video and 10 mins later I've paid up my $20 and downloaded and spent most of the night playing.
What have I been missing in my life?! I could become the most unlikely games convert ever. 36 years old and with no prior interest in games, I'm not only addicted but suddenly thinking about gaming graphics cards- well done Torchlight! Now where do I go once I've done this one?! Advice? I might even go back a few years instead of upgrading graphics card, is Diablo an old game?
TT
Been playing this a bit more.
Can't do one of the easy quests. Got to find some sort of Ember near water but after a good 8 hours of exploring downwards, I've still not found it.
The musician's quest are neverending.
Found loads of unique and rare items. One area yields loads but as you get further into the game, a lot harder to get hold of. Completed 1 set of 3 which isn't that great.
Still too many duplicates of unique items although some have slightly different attributes ie armour 50 on one, armour 44 on the same item later on. They might have different protection properties too ie one fire +10, the other ice +7
No idea if there's an end to the game. Down on Level 27 of some underground place and got to Level 25 so far. Weapons are amrour still suck - anything good you find always seems to require one level more or some extra say defense points and just enough for you to have to go up 2 levels.
Been trying to get some good gems but no idea which are the best - cut?
Got 2 Chaos stones that will not join together to make a better one although I did find a higher graded one. None of them seem too useful though.
Still hate the way the shopkeepers will buy an item of you for 59 gold yet sell it to you for 3000+. Got the barter mod which reduces prices of goods and everything seems to have shot up in price rather than being reduced!
Are there more than 2 quests + the main one? Only 2 characters seem to want anything.
Very sexy voice on the girl selling gems etc though ;)

Welcome to the world of gaming
Diablo 1 + 2 are ace. They're getting on for it now but I'm sure will play fine, might be worth a google to check. They should only be about a fiver each to buy.
Then there's Dungeon Siege 1 + 2 which is pretty similar series, and probably a whole load of other fun Diablo clones. Maybe you'll be feeling adventurous then and will want to dive into Baldur's Gate and the other RPGs. I hope you've got several hundred hours to spare ;)
Once you've finished with those, you'll be ready for when Diablo 3 comes out next year, though you might need a new graphics card for that :D
Diablo 2 has a weird Windows 7 issue where it takes literally several minutes to load unless you run it in Windowed mode which is incredibly small on a modern monitor!
I always liked Westwood Studios Nox myself :) Runs at a higher res than Diablo 2 as well so looks a bit cleaner by todays standards - still only 1024x768 though.
Back to Torchlight, as for the number of levels - as far as I'm aware there are 30 in the main game as well as the portal quests at the bottom and the random dungeon maps you can buy. Then there's the infinite dungeon mode when you finish it. Basically... if you're on 27/30 and still aren't a fan I think it's fair to say it's just not your game!
A lot of the game is intuitive but there are some things that are useful and not obvious that make the manual worth skimming through - fishing, pet stances etc. There's also a section of tips some of which are good ideas - like don't spend stat points in a stat not useful to your class to wear armor.
It's also I think worth reading the class forum for the class you choose to play to get an idea of how to skill up etc as you can't respec without a mod :| For instance it seems generally recommended that destroyers go more for defensive stats and skills than offensive on harder difficulty levels.
I bought the full thing yesterday, and I'm enjoying it so far.. (Level 12)
I do wonder if I should have tried Hard instead of Normal however, as I'm finding myself really quite powerful already. Unlike Diablo, you can buy some serious kit from the stores, and with the ability to reuse gems etc for free, I'm punching well above my weight at the moment.
I can see straight away it doesn't have the visual variation that Diablo does, but as a little warm up to Diablo 3, this is brilliant.
It's also I think worth reading the class forum for the class you choose to play to get an idea of how to skill up etc as you can't respec without a mod
I actually prefer it that way.. If you could pick and choose at random, then it takes the careful decision making process out of the loop, and could make it quite boring. There's bound to be a particular path that's better than everything else, and everyone would just end up with the same.
I'll def check out some other games, but right now it's all about getting to grips with all these new concepts. I will take on board the advice about reading the manual, but let's face it, I'm a bloke and it's a game with pretty colours and violence, I'll prob just run around killing things for a bit before resorting to that!
The only thing I'm stuck on at the moment is that within a sea of numbers and stats, the only thing I can't find out easily is what level I'm at- I get a notification when I go up a level, but apart from that it's not easy to tell, unless I mouse over some inventory items and can see if they are OK to use or not (think they are red if my level isn't high enough?)
Any advice?
Oh yes, and one last thing as someone mentioned Windows 7- it takes a bit of work to get it to start (ran it as administrator in the end, seemed to work). And due to that fiddling I now remember when I last played a game properly- I can quite clearly remember Doom, and creating boot discs and stuff when I was at uni, took so long to get it to run!
Got bored of it again.
Got to Level 30ish and down to over Level 30 of the main quest before I got really bored.
It's like deja vu over and over again. Move. Fight same few dragons and other critters. Move. Fight the same things again a few secs later and repeat ad infinitum.
The quests from the townsfolk are level dependent too. If you a quest near the start and you're level 2, that's the class of monsters you face. If you're Level 30, and do a simple quest, then you face Level 30 monsters even though you enter the mines at the start.
Been trying to collect rare and unique items. After Level 15 or so of the dungeons, they are incredibly few and far between. Bought a few from one of the town traders but got about 40 different sets / items with 1 complete set of 3 and 3 sets of 5/6 with 2 items.
Weapon wise, they still suck. Found a few really powerful things but as mentioned earlier, you're always short on say dexterity or something or you need to increase by 2-3 levels to use it.
Still too many of the same rare item, and don't like the way it's costing around 35000 gold to enchant a unique item!
Got a few extra sockets and a few top of the range gems although they do as much as in Diablo 2 and that was nothing much.
The musician's quests do end once you vanquish the critter on Level 32 or 35?
Spell wise, most are not worth the effort. Tried some like treasure hunter and barter and they do nothing for you. Been using the most basic offensive spell maxed out on 10 as that's the most useful one.
Still hate the way you can die instantly.
You're in a major fight being attacked from all sides by everything. You're throwing everything at them and your health isn't dropping.
Next fight, similar thing, but all of a sudden, your health drops to zero. You hit say 1 to use a grand health potion and nothing. 4 secs later, even though most of your foes are dead, you die. No reaction from the potion, your health replenish things don't kick in (i.e. either a skull or eye in a weapon gives 12 health per sec or something like that). You don't appear to be on fire, poisoned etc. You just die.
Re-use gems for free? How?
Alll I could do is prise them out and you lose them.
Don't like the way you have to unlearn a spell and lose it if you want to add a new one to a full set. It should return to your inventory which isn't big enough - hardly holds anything, although it could be set out so that each item takes a number of squares depending on it's size.
As for the size of the game, apparently when you complete it, an infinite dungeon is opened for you.
Also, am I the only one who had a load of c++ files related copied onto one of my drives but not deleted after installation?
Re-use gems for free? How?

What do you mean lose them? If you have a gem in a socketed item, take it to the two fellas in town. The left one will take that object and destroy it leaving you with the gem, which you can use again else where.
I went to the right one who destroys the gem and leaves the item.
Didn't realise they both did something different.
Doh..
Lefty destroys the item, and leaves you the contents,
Righty destroys the contents, and gives you back the item.
As for the limited inventory - are you aware you can load up your pet and send him back to town to sell your junk for you.
I also had a load of files left behind on the root of my d: drive from the installer for some reason.
As for the limited inventory - are you aware you can load up your pet and send him back to town to sell your junk for you.
A lovely feature.. It removes so much of the tedium that got in the way with Diablo.
I also had a load of files left behind on the root of my d: drive from the installer for some reason.
Did you get it from Steam?
Used the dog a few times although if you pick up too many things of use to you, and dump them on the dog, he will sell them all when he goes back to town. Holding SHIFT and clicking on an item on the ground apparently makes the dog pick them up.
Some areas prevent usage of the town portals so you can't always jump back to offload.
Do like the fact there are 2 separate chests. I was using one for rares/uniques and the other for my ember collection.
There are two chests? I've only used the one in the center, at the base of the lampost/sign..
I always Shift-Click on all the white items to get the dog to pick them up. I know they'll be crap, so I'll routinely send him back to town to offload, which generates me money without having to do a lot.
The poor bugger must be knackered though.

It's great if you stay alive... but if you die (and resurrect where you died), the pet respawns with you, cancelling the town run...
Was doing a particularly tough 'through the portal' quest last night - died maybe 20 times - took loads of attempts to get the pet to actually sell stuff!
Not sure Hard difficulty was such a good idea - I'm still spending 80%+ of my gold on health pots, and using them during the majority of fights with >2 mobs. Which is spoiling the enjoyment somewhat. Can't afford better gear or enchants to reduce the need for pots!
Is there nowhere I can grind lower level mobs to gain a couple of levels? - as with the main dungeon and portal quests I'm facing mobs of my own level (lv18 now), which are a bit tough (or at least, require a bit much potion spammage)
Does difficulty level affect XP gain? - or mostly just how hard you get hit (how many potions you've got to buy/chug...)?
There are two chests? I've only used the one in the center, at the base of the lampost/sign..

There's one chest in the town centre and a shared chest a few feet north of it outside a house with a chest sign.
The dog isn't too bad at spellcasting to be honest although he does forget to heal himself quite a lot (heal all would have been better but these all vanished as soon as I need them and just kept getting things like Heal Self VI).
Not sure if he can die. He's being badly injured and has fled a few times but he's always bounced back for me.
I've not really bought any health potions. Dead things keep dropping them and if need be I make better ones in town (usual 2 small ones makes a bigger one and so on). Should be like Diablo 2 where you place say 3 of a certain item into the Horadic Cube and you get something else out if it's ok. No idea though what works although potions, embers and 3 green rings work. Diablo 2 could create better armour and weapons by doing this.
Once you advance a level, so does everything else, so you can't go as Level 18 to what you think is an easy level and kill easily as they'll all match you (like I mentioned earlier with the first level of the mines - plenty of tough critters in there compared to the pussies when I first set out on my quest)
Think you get loads more XP for killing harder things although it takes far longer to kill them to get that XP and as you level up, having to kill a 100 of them to advance a level takes ages. Think it's around 1.5-2 dungeons per level should you slaughter everything that moves.
(Well, did on Diablo 2 again, you used to get something like 1 XP for killing a basic skeleton when you were Level 50 but 5000 for killing something closer to your level - then again, the creatures did vary in level unlike with Torchlight)
...the only thing I can't find out easily is what level I'm at- I get a notification when I go up a level, but apart from that it's not easy to tell, unless I mouse over some inventory items and can see if they are OK to use or not (think they are red if my level isn't high enough?)IIRC - on the Character screen (press 'C' to get it up) you will see two bars near the top, one yellow, one purple - the yellow one (XP - experience points) has your level to the left of it.
Ooh nice I thought you could only transmute embers.
As well as the main dungeon and portal you can buy random maps that have level ranges (eg 1-10). I don't know if you can buy lower level ones than you actually are?
And the manual says 'if you want to quickly build levels, check out the tomb on the east side of torchlight'. But I don't seem able to enter the tomb.
The files left behind were from both the steam demo and the full version I bought from runics website.
And the manual says 'if you want to quickly build levels, check out the tomb on the east side of torchlight'. But I don't seem able to enter the tomb.I think that's the 'infinite dungeon' that only opens up after you've finished the main quest.
As well as the main dungeon and portal you can buy random maps that have level ranges (eg 1-10). I don't know if you can buy lower level ones than you actually are?
Yes you can. There are 1-10, 10-20, 20-??? and possibly one other map. It's just some random level in the map range that's picked. Wherever you go will have foes matching your present level. The map levels are just floors.
There are a few other bonus dungeon levels obtained by killing a phase creature. They're glowing purple and when they die, they open a purple portal that takes you to a small area with a few thing things to kill and loads of gold lying around. You then use the return portal that takes you back to where you originally stepped through.
In the demo I faced mobs 3 or 4 levels above my character when I did one of those bought maps? Managed it cause I tried the demo on easy. Got tons and tons of gear I couldn't use cause I was too low a level.
I managed to somehow lose my sword and shield which was a bit inconvenient! I died after finishing one of the portal quests but before portalling back so I opted to resurrect in town and handed the quest in - next I looked I had no sword or shield in my hands or bag. Luckily the shopkeeper had a better weapon than I had for sale but I had to keep entering the dungeon and back to town again before he got a shield in. I tell you what... you sure feel it very suddenly when your weapon is no longer good enough don't you?!

I'm guessing you've accidentally switched to weapon set 2 and the others are actually still there? (Little 1/2 buttons next to your weapon slots)
Been there, done that...
Patch is out! Loads of bug fixes including the stupidly long load times for such a small game. :)

Cool.. I Was wondering about the long load times.
The load times didn't seem any better to me :( but to be fair I do have Dragons Age running in the background downloading content.
Also note that it appears to be a whole new full installer you have to download. And it won't install without you first uninstalling the old one. And 'remove save games' is ticked by default!! Be sure you pay attention when uninstalling! They are gonna have a lot of upset people on their forums!
Jesus.. I got it through Steam, so I don't know how that will handle it. Normally games just update without me having to do anything.
For those that don't frequent PennyArcade:

Lol! I always thought I wasn't getting much gold for my loot compared to what the guy sells it for :D
Yeah I'd imagine steam will just autoupdate. All the digital download providers have their own specific versions apparently.

Just gave the trial a go and the first 5 levels went very quickly! Quite addictive to play.
Playing as the alchemist. Why can't I get the summon imp to work? I've had it work once, but apart from that it uses up the mana but nothing appears. Just read the description, perhaps I have to be around dead bodies for it to work?

Steam patch is out - my version autoupdated last night. It's essentially a re-install though, as they've optimised the games pak files for loading, so back up your saves first.
There in a runic games folder in the application data/Appdata folder

Yep that is why, it appears from the corpses.
The effectiveness of your weapon seems to fall off very suddenly. You can fly through several levels slaughtering everything, level up and suddenly you can barely hit anything on the next level and need a weapon upgrade - which is only fine if there is one... :|
Well it cost me all my gold but the random item guy finally gave me a unique weapon that kicks ass and I was able to equip by regemming!
I churned through my ~75k fortune in 30secs flat last night without realising.
I kept putting the same item through the enchantment woman thinking it was free. It wasn't. :brickwall
I've also just had an update from Steam saying it's finished updating the game.. I wasn't aware it had started, and I've not backed up my charater. I've not loaded the game yet to see what's happened though.
Assuming the updated version is v1.11, then it seems to have updated through Steam without fuss, and without messing up my character. :)
It is :) It wasn't meant to be - but they put the wrong version number on it. :D

If you want to make sure you have the updated version check the Setting menu and it should have 3 new options for HW Skinning, Rimlights :suspect: and Vertical Sync which weren't in before.
I wish they would add the ability to map to mouse buttons other than the main two.
I've just finished the main part now, and have unlocked the caves in the lower right of the town.
I'm still enjoying it. I found that I was able to deal substantial damage throughout, but there was certainly a point where my armour/defense just became inadequate, and I struggled to upgrade it. If I got surrounded, that usually meant death.
Since ******* away my fortunes by accident, I've also got a money problem now, and I'm struggling to get that on the increase again..
Now £7.49 on Steam, with added Steam Cloud and Achievements

The unlimited dungeon is a pain. I created a town portal and jumped back to town. I then decided to finish someone's quest and used another town portal once that was done. I then had to start from floor 1 of the dungeon again.
Been trying to collect set items but I'm lucky if I see 1 in 20-30 levels now. Found the odd nice weapon but that's it. Tried upping magic find etc but that seems to have zero effect.
Will this run on my Samsung NC10 with XP?
Try the demo.. I'm guessing not very well though.
Well it was actually designed to run on netbooks. There's a tick box in the options to put it in netbook mode. Dunno how good it looks or how well it runs though as I've never tried it.
It's now one of the Steam deals of the day at £3.74. You'd be mental to miss out at that price. (either that, or you already have too many unplayed games or don't like this sort of game)

Played the demo over the last few days. Sadly at 14.99 I'll have to hold off buying in the hope it drops to a weekend bargain again soon.
Nice game. Only issue I have is that it would be nice if I didn't have to click the mouse for every attack strike. Is there a way to configure it so I just click once on a target and he will keep hitting until it's dead ? My mouse button is going to wear out otherwise :D
Just hold the button down IIRC..

Coming to XBLA/PSN
Runic Games had dreams of putting Torchlight on Xbox Live Arcade, then it put "serious effort" into a console version and now the studio is hoping to have the game out by this holiday for PSN and XBLA. Runic CEO Max Schaefer told Joystiq at Gamescom today, "We're trying, we're talking [to Sony and Microsoft] and we hope to get that done quickly." Although there's no release window, he told us it'll "hopefully" be available "by the holidays."
Schaefer also told us the game has now sold over 750,000 units and is en route to a million. The RPG reached the half-million milestone back in May after launching in October, following a tiny development time of 10 months. If the sales figure seems a bit low, the executive mentioned that piracy has been an issue, but they have no way of tracking how many illegal copies were made.
As for Torchlight 2 on consoles, Schaefer told us Runic will "try" to get the multiplayer sequel to consoles sometime after the PC and Mac release.
I can only imagine how awkward it's going to be with a controller.

Don't see why though. Sacred 2 did it relatively well and that's a lot more complicated than Torchlight. Glad to see this though as I'd rather play a loot game with a controller, can't stand using the mouse only. Click click click -zzzzzzz

After buying this ages ago on Steam and never bothering to play I've recently got quite addicted, but I just can't kill Ordrak. I'm doing about 15 damage per hit on him, then he summons dragons and skeletons which I can either run from til he gets rid of them or stand still, get surrounded and die. I'm about level 34-35ish, and my gear isn't awful. So far his health bar pretty much hasn't decreased.
Is there something obvious I'm missing, or am I too low level/badly geared?
I found that your weapon very suddenly becomes very ineffective in the game. It's quite annoying!

aha I worked it out. I just learnt the Devastate ability and spammed that along with a few mana potion until he died. Maybe in 2 they could make the boss fights a little more interesting, but I still loved the game.
It sure does get repetitive after a while. :( Deathspank is a bit more interesting. :)

Anyone got this on xbla? How does it play on consoles?

It's great, I love using the controller. It's why I don't play many loot em ups on the PC as I find using the mouse and just constantly clicking a bit dull. They're transferred the controls spot on. Same as with Sacred 2 which I think did a good job with it too.

Anyone help please?
A miner named Flux wants me to get a Cracked Fire-Ember from the third floor of the mines. I've been there and I have the ember but when I go to him he keeps repeating the quest. Is it a glitch or am I doing something wrong?
Also, how do I find Necropolis?
