I've just become the lucky recipient of a friend's spare copy of Twelve Monkeys. So far I've only had time to have a quick look on the PC, but I can't figure out how you choose between 1:85 ratio and full-screen which seem to be on offer from the details on the back and from a quick visit to play. The only menu options seem to be Play, Chapter Selection, Subtitles on/off and the Hamster video. Heeeeeeeeelp....

Got the region 2 and its been ages since I watched it, but isn't it a double-sided job? (ie. 4:3 on one side, 1:85 on the other)

One way or another, I definately watched it in widescreen...

No, it's single-sided with the label side being plastered in red ink. I doubt I'd see very much at all if I tried to play that side. 1:85 isn't a problem for me even on a 25" 4:3 TV, it's more curiosity really to know how the heck I get at the full-screen version, if it's there at all.

Try changing your DVD players TV settings to 4:3 (P&S)

If I recdall, the R2 version has a 1.85:1 WS letterbox where R1 has anamorphic.

I don't remember anything about a ****&**** transfer when I owned it...

When I watched U571 I could have either a pan and scan or widescreen picture by changing the settings in my DVD players TV setup.

Why don't they do all DVDs like this? Surely it would only affect the quality of the pan and scan picture, which won't matter as people who want to watch it in pan probably won't notice picture quality anyway.

It may well have an automatic pan-and-scan feature encoded (too lazy to check, sorry), but I was under the impression that the 4:3 refers to the aspect ratio of the nearly 90-minute documentary that accompanies the film, 'The Hamster Factor'.

I looked at the new R2 version in a black case instead of a Jewel Case (which was the original version).

The packaging now states 4:3 FULL FRAME. The original version was Full Frame 4:3 and 1:85:1 non anamorphic.

I've got the original jewel-case version, the back of which seems to suggest there are full and widescreen versions on the disk, but since I first posted this, I've had a look at a couple of sites selling the disk (looks like the original version too) and they state it is 1:85 only. CONFUSING!
