Like many other of you good folks on this here forum, I've been dying(pun intended:D ) to see this and was most disappointed when it got pulled off the new DVD release of the Evil Dead. So since someone mentioned it was available on Kazaa or Morpheous I made it my mission to find it. Today I was successful  and it wasn't using any of these proggies either. It is in the window media video format (.wmv) and just over 50MB's and to say the quality is bad pirate VHS quality would be an insult to pirate VHS tapes. BUT, it is watchable and it may be the only one available, ever!
Right then, before I go giving out the link I'd like some advice from you guys, preferably a moderator. Since there are a number of, I would assume legal reasons this ain't available is there any reason I shouldn't post a link, or should I just go ahead and post it anyway. Obviously I ain't got this on my webspace, it's on somebody else's so if I give out the link on here it's gonna get swamped by all you people and it may crash the server it's on and then nobody gets it. Or I could give the link to say 10 people at a time by email who then post to let me know they've got and so on. I can't upload it either as I've got a firewall at work and a 56K at home.
At this point in time I don't see any harm in anyone who's interested putting their email addy here, so some advice would be appreciated as we don't wanna lose it or incur anybodies wrath:D Mod's: advice please!!!

I have seen the very same file and the quality is better if you mess about with the brightness and contrast in windows media player ....seems the url for the file is spreading like wildfire nowadays
I just burned a copy of the Follow from my Hire CDROM (I got from BMW Ireland) for a fellow fourmite last week... & posted it to him -
Ah, ummm - do you have a burner Alan? (me 'awl mate...?!!)

I'd be grateful if you e-mail me the link Alan!!
I think the policy on offering access to bootleg or pirate stuff is fairly clear. If this material is being made freely available by the distributors for people to download then that's fine. If what you are saying is that somebody has made an unauthorised copy that is going to infringe the copyright of the owners, then that is illegal. If you are unclear as to the origin of the material, then don't post the link. If you are unclear on the forum's stance, please check through the T&Cs carefully.
Drop me an email please with the URL

Just to muddy the waters somewhat, I don't think the film has ever had a formal distributor, which makes the origin of this version all the more intriguing.
The print I projected twelve years ago was personally brought over to the Scala Cinema by Raimi's friend and colleague Scott Spiegel, who told me that it was the only one in existence (being the original Super 8 footage that actually went through the camera!)

I would have loved to have seen that .......sigh
oh and as for the dubious origin so far all I know is that it started out life as an mpeg on morpheus and was transfered to a .wmv it is clearly taken from a bootleg tape too

<B>I would have loved to have seen that .......sigh </B>
I doubt it. It looked terrible (a domestic Super 8 projector can only manage a very dim picture that filled a tiny fraction of the Scala's screen) and sounded worse, as my projector couldn't read anything recorded on the balance track - so there was no music and effects, only dialogue. I doubt it would have been that good a film even under better conditions, but as it was it was strictly for completist fans only!

The quality of the movie file does tend to suggest that it originally came from the Super 8 footage that MB mentions. This was then transferred on to video tape and then captured onto pc, I would assume!! As I said the quality is bad, but watchable. Obviously you can convert the.wmv to mpg and then make a nice vcd to watch it in all it's glory on your widescreen telly.:D
Anyway, do the mods have any objections to the good folk on this forum asking for the link?? As I certainly won't be posting a link on here.
could you please please e-mail me it too
ive wanted to see this for so so so so so long
cheers mate
id be very interested in seeing it
i was most dis appointed by its withdrawl from the new edition and cancelled it and am keepin my elite copy.
Here is the URL...
The following file is approx. 50 MB and the quality is poor as you might guess but this will fairly saturate your WTW craving...
By the way, it is encoded as Windows Media Player format...
No links please

Alan_Mac, there is another version floating around which is slightly better quality. This is the version that i have and its 320mb.
Exactly what is 'Within The Woods' anyway? is it some sort of prequel to Evil Dead or a few deleted scenes from the film??
Its a short that Raimi et al made in order to get financing for the Evil Dead. It also gave them an opportunity to test a few of the ideas that they had for the final Evil Dead film.
Its described in the book The Evil Dead Companion (available at Amazon and in all good book shops and well worth a read if your a fan of Raimi, Campbell or Renaissance Pictures).

Is Within The Woods on the R2 Book Of The Dead disc?
It says so in the ads.

powlest, I'm using Tempgenc to convert it, usually works quite well.
Sid, yeah I did know about the bigger version but I couldn't find it, so I was quite happy when I found this smaller version.
Since NMA has posted the link, I hope everyone who wants it, gets it.
the deadites.net forum is quite informative about where to find this also

Well It was kinda a dry run of <I>Evil Dead</i>
Note I nicked the following from a newsgroup (spoilers)...
Read along with picture (http://cityonfire.com/gZa/wtwpix.jpg)
RUNNING TIME: Around 29 minutes All the actors go by their real first names.
Four people are hanging out in a house near the woods: Bruce, Ellen, Scott (Spiegel) and some other girl... Laughing, talking, playing Monopoly and listening to disco music that Anchor Bay was forced to change in their version that now no one will ever see. Also, the porch swing is moving and slamming into the side of the house (like in ED).
Bruce and Ellen have a romantic (picnic) afternoon in the woods and Bruce finds some weirdo indian artifacts in the dirt. They sleep by a campfire and Ellen wakes up. Bruce is gone. There must be SOMETHING wrong because leaving a piece like Ellen laying there on a blanket all alone is not a "guy" thing to do.
Ellen goes to look for him and finds him dead and bloodied in the trees and is chased by an unseen force back to the house (kinda like Jamie Lee's scene in HALLOWEEN looking for her keys). Scott opens the door just in time.
They freak because Bruce hasn't returned. The other girl goes outside to shine a light out into the woods (cue stupid teenage horror stereotype here) and is picked up and stabbed in the neck by a bloodied zombified Bruce. YIPE! He steps outside with the body and chops it up with an axe in the moonlight. Let the "Join Us!"s begin... That's pretty much what Bruce goes around screaming for the remainder of the short as he terrorizes the teens.
Ellen grabs a nice huge sharp cutting implement and, wisely, starts carrying it around. Hilarity ensues as Ellen accidentally stabs Scott in the stomach and his body gets lodged between an open door (like in ED2).
She escapes Bruce, but he terrorizes her through the windows, in the cellar, etc. In one scene right out of PHANTASM, Ellen stabs at Bruce's hand as it is lodged between a door and its frame.
Open window! Whoopsie! Bruce is INSIDE THE HOUSE! ZOINKS!
In a really cool shot, he jumps up into frame and grabs at Ellen (obviously shot in reverse). She cuts his hand to free herself. Zombie-Bruce gets mad and chews his hand completely off.
She takes his severed hand (that is still clutching a knife) and stabs him in the back and then chops him up with a handy dandy axe on the couch. As she cries in the background... YIPE... the dead Scott now comes to life (sits up right in the foreground as scary music plays... insert meek girlfriend jump here). The short film ends on the creepily-smiling Scott and a rather unsettling music note on the soundtrack.

so how come it will look better on VCD ?
i thought if it is encoded at that resolution, then it will always look the same, no ?

It seems to default to avi so when you browse for your video file just scroll down the files of type box and select all files(*.*) you should then be able to select the WMV format and continue from there. Worked fine for me:)

cheers for the link. I have to say however, after viewing the short film, i dont think it's anything that special, course it'd look better with a quality transfer, but with a print as bad as that, it's probably not a bad thing that Anchor Bay dont feature it on their DVD. Sure, it's dissapointed many by it's exclusion, but it's not the end of the world having it absent. (course, might be a different case for hardcore Evil Dead fans..)
PS.. how do i save the .wmv file for future reference? or am i unable to? Media Player always confuses me.

I've tried that, but it says that the format is unsupported? I'm just using the defaults - any more suggestions?

It should look a fair bit worse, because the VCD encoding process will probably introduce more artefacting.
Then again, as the original was only shot on Super 8, even a state-of-the-art digital transfer directly from the original film reel isn't exactly going to look like <I>Toy Story 2</I>!

I can select it as an audio format, but when I try and select as a video format, it's giving me this unsupported error - what a headache !! Are there any other ways of sorting this - other products?
Please ...
go to http://www.tmpgenc.net/e_download.html and download the latest version?

Managed to get it going by saving the file as an avi within windows media player then trying again.
Thanks for all your help guys? I've wanted to see this piece of cinematic history for years.

Just had a thought, Within The Woods was all ready to go on the BotD DVD, then pulled at the last minute. So it was obviously cleaned up at least to a relatively good standard....
so surely there's the possibilty of a new and (almost) sparkly bootleg somewhere on the net in the near future?????
Anyone else thought about this?

A 14 inch TV is way more forgiving than a 1152 x 864 resoultion Monitor.
That's why DVDs look better on TVs than on Monitors (despite the Monitors having a far better resolution)

doh!!
ofcourse.. so simple. And so it is done.
I was thinking along the lines of saving from within Media Player..
What does Windows Media Player mean when it tells you:
No combination of filters could be found to render the stream.
I can't save it, otherwise I'd play it via TMPGEnc, which I have successfully downloaded and unzipped.
although the quality is aweful, i really enjoyed it:D
by the way what aspect ratio did u all set it too when encoding the VCD?
I just re-downloaded Windows Media Player and it's all working beautifully.
Not the most stunning of quality, but good enough!
I only have a 56k connection and a 2 hour on line limit, so downloading the whole thing is impossible. Does any know of a good download app. That can do it in sections, other than gozilla?

Also the file format is not good for me as .wmv only works on media player 7 and dont have it.
Iv never done a vcd before so a copy would be appreciated.

4:3 as I think the WMF is 1:1 so I thought that was close enough

Using TMPGEnc, how long's it likely to take to encode to MPG using an average spec PIII?
I had a go at home (on a PII 450) with a 5 minute WMV file and the projected encoding time was 26 hours !!!
I'd give Within The Woods a go at work, but I don't fancy tying a PC up for nearly a week...
(sorry if this is straying dangerously towards the C&C Forum, but we're here now ;) )

Making VCD takes ages and more patients than gawd! (Not to mention HD space etc...)
As an example here's the first 15seconds of WTW in VCD format...
...wtw15sec.mpg (http://cityonfire.com/gZa/wtw15sec.mpg) (approx. 3Mb) - <I>Right click to download</i>
Which I might add just took me 10 minutes to render!
So I ain't doing the whole thing until the weekend.Originally posted by Hamburger3

just found this on deadites.com http://planeta.terra.com.br/informatica/danielg2/temp/wtw-test.html this is a cleaned up version of the 50 meg one
and this is how he cleaned it up - Actually, the whole movie is in a better quality, because, this one is only for test purpose. And the whole movie are bigger than this one, it has 320x220 instead 200x151.
I use Adobe Premiere to join audio and video, and for some filters, and Media Cleaner to compress the video and also, to apply some filters.
