NicolaUK

So unsurprisingly, the dates have now been announced and it is, wait for it, 2nd weekend in June

The only band confirmed so far is Steel Panther, heavy AC/DC rumours :D

Soooo, same crowd going? Or are you waiting for line-ups

SGP_Mustang
20-10-2009, 01:53
Really regret not going this year, want to try and go next year but waiting for line up first, but if it's true that AC/DC are playing..i'd go for them alone.

Guns 'n Roses have announced Canadian dates for January but you imagine they'll be looking to do their own stadium shows rather than festivals next year ...

NicolaUK
20-10-2009, 08:58
In all honesty I'm not sure they'd be taken seriously enough to do stadium shows here, arenas yes

I'm going to go back on what I said before - I have a very sneaky feeling they're the 'big news story' Andy Copping has referred to, ie Axl + Slash.

NicolaUK
15-12-2009, 19:04
AC/DC self confirmed but have since taken it down but it's pretty certain they're the Friday night headliners

Thomasd
16-12-2009, 06:20
Whats all this about Metallica? I read on the Download message boards they had self confirmed too but can see nothing to back it up.

Did see the AC/DC screengrab though - good news :D

I'm not sure about that at all. The supposed leaked Metallica date was the Friday which is where DC have now leaked and there's no screengrab of that either. I think that's more wishful thinking than any real substance to the rumour.

Not until April but the first announcement from the organisers will be made next month with new bands being added every couple of weeks

Andy Copping has tweeted:

I wanna go "Hey big britches, I've got **/** & *** & ****, so top that!" but I can't & I won't!

So, my prediction is AC/DC, GNR and SOAD.

I'd love to go but the weekend as a whole will cost the hick end of £500 by the end of it and I'm really struggling to justify it. It'll most likely be a last minute thing if I do.

Announcement due in about 2 weeks.

13-01-2010, 12:27
Ooh, shiny.:D

Heavy rumours on Metal Hammer about System of a Down, Soundgarden, AC/DC, Metallica, 1988 GNR etc

Quite how many of these (if any) get confirmed remains to be seen.

Thomasd
13-01-2010, 12:41
Also heard rumours of Them Crooked Vultures and Van Halen

NicolaUK
13-01-2010, 13:48
Some pretty duff rumours there :oh-hum:

NicolaUK
17-01-2010, 01:06
Looks like TCV are playing and I think the other headliners look like being someone that'll finish rehab and another that found God - but we'll see in a week or two :D

GnR, who knows, SOAD I think likely - hope so anyway.

Personally, I'm quite looking forward to it!

NicolaUK
18-01-2010, 14:18
And confirmed capacity is up to 110,000 :D

9 bands are apparently going to be announced and there is now a animation on the main site with a countdown. Looks like the box anim has clues to the bands being named as well. If so it's pretty obvious who some of the acts are.

And from Andy Copping earlier

The Download forum has been buzzing with folks posting their predicyions of which bands will be announced in this evening’s Download announcement. While we’ve already revealed what we know about Download 2010, Copping has revealed that a posting from user RockSmart has correctly identified 6 of the 9 bands that will be announced this evening.
The 9 bands posted by RockSmart are:
AC/DC
Wolfmother
Bullet
Motorhead
TCV
Biffy Clyro
Megadeth
Paramore
Scorpions
Come back tonight at 7.45pm for the first announcement from Download 2010!

25-01-2010, 18:47
Stone Temple Pilots get in !!!!!!

Joining AC/DC and following two incredible sold out shows at Hammersmith Apollo before Christmas, are supergroup Them Crooked Vultures.

If that wasn't enough we've also confirmed Deftones along with Stone Temple Pilots, Bullet For My Valentine, Megadeth, Motörhead, Wolfmother and Volbeat, with plenty more to announce in the coming months

Steve39
25-01-2010, 19:11

Just read that flags on sticks will be banned from the main arena this year - and about damn time. Amount of times I've had my view obscured by that sort of thing.

I also believe Iron Maiden were to release their 2007 set on DVD but couldn't because the footage was obscured by flags.

Very  news.

NicolaUK
31-01-2010, 22:40
I agree, about bloody time

Bish
01-02-2010, 16:46
Yeah the Maiden footage was ruined by the flags, great news if it is enforced on the day and at the very least it should keep them to a minimum. At times it was getting like ******* Glastonbury :(

Aerosmith :p

ggrant
08-02-2010, 18:12
The chaos that is happening over on the forums at the lack of announcement is unreal. There are at least 10 threads asking when the next one is and who people think it will be.

Although it doesn't help that Andy Copping is bigging everything up like crazy via Twitter.

Thomasd

Aerosmith :p

Aerosmith and Paul Rodgers/Sammy Hagar/Tom Jones/Chris Cornell/Billy Idol/Whoever Joe Perry picks at random next? No thanks lol

So another announcement Monday, Rage + Aerosmith then?

Has to be Rage at the very least. The free show is the Sunday before and as it is a lottery I can see something like "Didn't win the lottery, well you can still see RATM at Download 2010!" :D

As for Aerosmith...believe it when I see it

ggrant

I can't say I'd be overly enthrawled if RATM were to be announced as a headliner.

I don't think they'd be stupid enough to announce them as main stage headliners but you never know.

I'm going to go with Aerosmith + GnR.

The-tonemeister

My guess is RATM & GnR.

GnR have just been announced at the Sweden Rock Festival (around the same weekend as Download).;)

Even without the Christmas number one, I couldn't see them playing anywhere other than top of the bill

NicolaUK
12-02-2010, 17:51
But them playing a free show the week before I think the punters would feel cheated if they were placed in that slot - we'll have to see on Monday!

I wouldn't so much as it's a lottery. If I don't get tickets for it, I can see them at Download. Won't be a huge selling point for people yet to buy tickets I guess. Also if it really is AC/DC, GNR and Aerosmith....3 classic rock headliners?

Who knows - as long as they announce Poison :D

Bish
12-02-2010, 22:17
Rage would have to headline main stage, I'd be amazed if they were second stage headliners.

ggrant
13-02-2010, 11:42
To be fair, if BFMV are capable of headlinging Second Stage, then I would agree that Rage would be at the very least be sub-headliners on the Main Stage.

It just wouldn't be my cup of tea :D

Thomasd
13-02-2010, 16:48
Apparently a member of Lamb Of God said that they would be playing at Download the same day as System Of A Down and Soundgarden.

I was under the impression SOAD were not getting back together? Maybe he got his politically charged metal bands mixed up.

Give me Soundgarden though.

Rage playing in Dublin on the 8th now.

Some guy on the forums says its SOAD... "Trust me" is his reason lol

No reason why it cant be all of the mentioned - Just that one of them would be a sub-headliner. My money being on RATM.

I am bitterly disappointed in RATM - I'm not saying they shouldn't play but headlining on the strength of a Christmas no 1/Facebook thing is incredibly lame, lazy and just a way of Live Nation getting someone else to fund the free gig.

I couldn't see them in any other slot other than main stage headliner. It was obvious they would combine the free gig with a few other shows and I don't see any problem with that.

They may well have lost a headliner but the hype is always over the top every year. I not keen on Aerosmith but can appreciate many will love them.

Next 5 are:
Stone Sour - :notworthy
30 Seconds To Mars - :)
5FDP - :)
Billy Idol - :|
Lamb Of God -

I always found Stone Sour great on record and a bit weak live when I have seen them at past Downloads.

Billy Idol though killed in 2005 can't wait to see him again :D

The placement though I think will change - think I heard STP were playing Saturday.

I'm happier with the second 'wave' rather than the first. Never seen Stone Sour or 30STM so will defo be checking them out. At most I would have RATM as sub-headliner and will be seeing whats going on at other stages when they play.

Aerosmith? Again, I'm not too fussed about them as I saw them at Hyde Park Calling a couple years back and there hasn't been anything new since then other than a load of legal battles.

I'm still amazed anyone can think RATM are not big enough to headline, as already pointed out they headlined the Carling weekend when they reformed only a couple of years ago.

Apparently 2 of the bands in tonights announcment will be interviewed on Radio Ones Rock Show. So thats filtered it down to 20 bands I may like

Mr NicolaUK:

Cinderella, Slash, Steel Panther and Biffy Clyro are my predictions and if DEP and KIGH are also announced that leaves 16 bands. I'm waiting with hope rather than expectation for tonight's bands but as it stands, I'm a bit disappointed so far.

Bish
22-03-2010, 18:08
Yeah I'm not getting too excited as most of them will be smaller acts. I'll be happy with Slash & Biffy though. I never seem to be able to watch DEP so maybe this time I will.

So far for me personally, this has to be one of the worst lineups I've seen for a Download. Saw both ACDC and Aerosmith back in the MoR days and they bored me live then.

I'm not paying a fortune just to go see Cinderella and Motorhead (only bands on the list, so far, I've not seen I'd really like to).

http://www.ukrockfestivals.com/don-1983-Spread.jpg

I'm happy with the line up this year and there's plenty of decent acts for most fans of rock/metal. I think you would have to be very unlucky if there wasn't a few bands on each day to make a ticket a worthwhile purchase. I love all the people that moan every year about the line up. No major clashes so far for me but Coheed and TCV is annoying :(

High Voltage does look good as does HRH but with Sonisphere as well this year I doubt I'll have the cash, plus HRH is very much an nostalgia trip.

Strange that they have released day tickets and details of who is playing what day so early on - is that a sign that the weekend tickets arn't selling well? I think last year day tickets wern't released till just a few weeks before the event.

30 Bands added...

Rock icon SLASH will be bringing his top hat and top riffs to Download. Previous walks around the park with Guns n Roses in 1988, Slash's Snake Pit in 1995 and Velvet Revolver in 2005 & 2007 will be topped off by his appearance this year.

Returning Dawgs AS I LAY DYING make their third appearance to bury us all. ATREYU are back to lead their congregation of the damned. Wake Up! Those Gibraltan insects BREED 77 make a fourth appearance to break the silence. Somebody will need to save me when PANIC CELL fire it up for a third round. Ding ding woof! PORCUPINE TREE will repeat their 2007 incident - I just hope they leave Bonnie The Cat at home! Grrrrr.... THE USED wont be watered down when they make their second showing. Rising like a Phoenix, ZEBRAHEAD are back for a third bark and to give us more Death By Disco. NONPOINT bring the march of war following their 2002 Ozzfest showing.

Also returning to Download are CANCER BATS, FLYLEAF, NO AMERICANA, YOUNG GUNS and GLAMOUR OF THE KILL.

MICHAEL MONROE, former Hanoi Rocks frontman wont be fakin' it as he pops his Donington cherry this year and brings some of that oriental beat. And Ginger.

Other first timers breaking their Download ducks quack quack woof include that mix of Fall Out Boy, Every Time I Die and Anthrax - THE DAMNED THINGS. HALESTORM bring their dirty work for your dirty mind. ENUFF Z'NUFF will be a new thing on the bill this year. ROCK SUGAR are praying for a sweet weekend when they bring their mashup stylings to the Download stage. Mmmm mash... Showing us how to do battle, SENSER wont be so refined when they play. German thrash maniacs DIE APOKALYPTICAN REITER will make an eruption when they ride into town. Swiss death wave industialists SYBREED will bring the doomsday party.

And thats not all! HOLY GRAIL, WHITE WIZZARD, STRAIGHT LINES, SWEETHEAD, TIGER PLEASE, TYKETTO, YEAR LONG DISASTER and REVOKER will all be dipping their toes into the Download dog bowl of rock treats too

Hoping that Porcupine Tree clash with Motorhead, as I don't want to miss Billy Idol but will if I have to lol.

Looks like I'll be ending the day on Stage 3 Saturday :D

I'd agree with this, the claims by Andy Copping that weekend camping is nearly sold out are bogus imo as a last gasp attempt to sell what's left of the tickets.

That said, eBay will prolly be the best bet but at a substantially lower price than what they were paid for.

It takes us anywhere between 1 hour 45min to 2 hours 10min depending on the traffic and that's from Wrexham. It will be more or less the same from Chester, just get on the A51 at Vicars Cross and head for Nantwich, then take the A500 - A50 all the way there. You might hit a bit of rush hour traffic leaving at 4pm.

If you get to the gates after 6pm you might even be able to pick up a cheap day ticket from the touts?

We had tickets to go and see them in Wolverhampton next week (supported by Anvil). This was the resheduled show from last year (as they postponed that one too).

Can't help feel that the tickets weren't selling well for the european tour either. They were originally playing the Civic then got downgraded to the Wulfrun and I heard a couple of weeks ago that it was finally going to happen in the Slade Rooms.

14-06-2010, 16:48
Whew.... what a weekend.

First band for us on Friday was Anathema followed by the mighty Coheed & Cambria. Then a stroll over to the main stage to witness probably one of only two disappointing acts of the weekend. Like the album Them Crooked Vultures live aren't as good as it should be, it's nice to see JPJ & Dave Grohl bashing the drums but apart from "No One Loves Me" it's all rather dull and boring. AC/DC were superb especially not having seen them on the recent Black Ice tour. Shame they seem to be very petty when it comes to names on shirts etc.

Saturday we caught all the bands on the main stage but took breaks during Flyleaf, Atreyu and Lamb Of God sitting further back. Highlights were 5FDP, Deftones & Rage who were even better than when I saw them at Leeds a couple of years back. The second disappointment of the weekend were Megadeth who for some reason seemed a let down.

Sunday was again main stage all day and like Saturday we saw all the acts. Best surprise was sitting down near the front waiting for Saxon then seeing FM walk out on stage, we had left for the festival prior to the announcement so it was a great shock to see them after so many years. Steve Overland has still got a great voice and their new stuff isn't too bad either. Cinderella were the weakest of the day but still decent enough. Saxon had a nice long set and as for Slash!!!! how ******* good was that, Myles Kennedy was great and performed the GnR stuff and stuff like Ghost really well. Who needs Axel? Lemmy's guest appearance wasn't really no surprise but still very welcome.

Sadly the end of Slash was the last we saw of the good weather and we went from putting on the sun lotion provided by the security to being totally soaked through to ther skin. It was so bad it sent many metalheads running off home and cutting short their festival. We had a few texts from our camp saying they were calling it a day as well. The rain didn't stop Billy Idol although it at that point I was quite ****** off by the weather myself then it was time for Motorhead and all thoughts of the rain had gone, I've seen Motorhead a few times and this was a s good as any of them.

As a huge fan and not having seen them live before it was natural that Stone Temple Pilots would be the highlight of the weekend, simply ******* awesome. So already being on the center barrier we decided to stay where we were for Aerosmith who were fantastic which is a huge compliment coming from someone who isn't even a fan. Tyler has still got a great voice and looked well.

After it was all over we got back to the camp and decided to grab most of our stuff and head for home. Luckily we took most of it to the car that morning. I didn't take many photos this year but will post a couple when I get chance to look at them.

Thomasd
14-06-2010, 16:56

Bish, what did you think of the wristbanding upon entry? I was working for Oxfam and we were the ones doing all the wristbanding. People generally seemed impressed with them and I only had 1 or 2 that were unhappy out of over 1000 people that I did personally.

Must say though, highlights for me were definitely Rage and Slash, he was amazing and to hear all the crowd singing along to sweet child of mine and paradise city will stay in my memory for many years to come.

Bish
14-06-2010, 22:08
Bish, what did you think of the wristbanding upon entry?
The actual process took a few seconds longer than the old pull ones but the bands were really well made and comfy with no long dangly bits. The ends did fray but a lot of people burned the ends to stop this.

How come Oxfam did the banding?

allan
14-06-2010, 22:23
Not sure, first time Oxfam were at Download and the first time these type of bands have been used. Apparently we're the first people in the country or maybe even the world to have actually used them at a music festival. It was kinda fun to put them on everyone, even though I did it 3 times for 8 hours each time. One **** put it in his mouth right after being done and burnt his lips.

They opted out of being on the merch/programme etc.
So how does it normally work with headline acts, do they get a cut from the Official Download merch and couldn't come to agreement with regards money or was it just a case of them hoping their shirt sales would increase due to their name not being available on other stuff? either way it's a bit petty.

Nice thoughts Thomas although I can't agree about the organization. We always hang back for a few minutes then grab something to eat and leave the arena without any fuss. I think the problem was so many forgot about the barriers and tried to just move back instead of to the side. There was also several exits but people tried to use the same one.

As for the walk back to the camps we were in blue so it wasnt bad at all, but there's not much you can do for those camped further away.

We had more problems the next night also. Been going for years now, and I know its a relatively new layout and never had the sort of problems we encountered. Maybe its just been luck in previous times.

The problems getting the coach out of there Monday was a whole different thing though. I'll get to moaning about it lol.

There was definitely a problem with the left DC stage exit, there were barriers there for some reason

We headed for the guest area after DC but the entrance was mobbed so didn't bother, had some food in the arena and went back to the hotel - we were late getting up there and hadn't checked in to the hotel yet anyways.

The whole guest area thing needs a rethink too, all of the RIP people are moaning, again, as they think it's just for them and the bands but the reality is there are far more press/guests/reps etc. in there, I don't think it's the paid folk that are making it too busy. Then you have all the RIP people that seem to be there all weekend camped out in the hope of seeing someone famous, seriously what a waste of money.

The event merch thing is just so poor. At the end of the day it is effectively free advertising for your band, by doing this they've just ****** people off and alienated a huge swathe of fans as their event shirt read 'back in England' FFS.

I guess 3.2 milllion ain't bad for a couple of hours work.

I had a great weekend, we wimped out of the rain on Sunday when Lemmy was on, I was soaked through.

Slash was awesome, Halestorm, magnificent, Godsized a pleasant surprise. The 5FDP thing was amusing, TCV boring as hell, Nonpoint great, Saxon, what a crowd they pulled. Sorry to have missed STP + Aerosmith, might catch STP tomorrow though so not all lost.

No doubt we'll be back next year :D

The only act I missed due to rain was Ginger - hightailed it back to campsite to change, got back and it stopped raining for Aerosmith (it did that in 2007 at Hyde Park too!)

Wish I could've seen Steel Panther again but we were soaked through by that point and as we'd all got in for free we weren't that fussed about leaving early. Glad we got to see Rage on the Saturday night though.

Steel Panther were fantastic, almost forgot about the weather especially when they did the Backstreet Boys cover and brought Scott Ian out :notworthy - I got myself the shirt I should have bought when I saw them at Shepherds Bush last year.

On that subject also got the 30 years of Donington shirt they had - was hoping they'd do something like that although that does mean I now technically own a Quo shirt

You should definitely try to see STP. I thought they were amazing. Absolutely loved their set. One of the bands of the weekend along with DC & Slash.

Yeah STP were simply amazing, well worth waiting in the rain for and after Billy Idol I'd forgotten all about the weather.

It was funny when Steel Panther were on that viewing platform and a few people clambered on top of the ice cream van to get closer to them.

Yep me too. Once it started pouring down we were contemplating missing out on Steel Panther (just too muddy to walk to 2nd stage) but I said another good sing-along would help us forget the weather. Glad we did as they were brilliant as always.

After SP the missus headed back to the tent to get dry before returning for Aerosmith. I stayed wet and went straight to the front of Main stage to enjoy STP. Soaked to the bone, but well happy I did. :)

I really wish I'd had water proof trousers, top half of me was nice and dry. I would've hung around till the end then. Good job we'd packed up our tent and everything in the morning though before heading to the main arena.

STP was the reason I went, and I made sure I got to the front. They did not disappoint. Incredible.

I'm listening to the bootleg of AC/DC from this weekend, I thought I'd posted at the time about how all over the shop Brian was for Train, it's quite shocking to listen back to it
