View Full Version : Advice I've been given from a photography shop- this sounds barking....but is it?

Well, I'm looking for a new camera, as I've decided that my Canon Powershot A710 is pretty ok, but I'd really like something a bit more compact to carry around "just in case" or such.
So the options are to get something for £70 in Tesco, or pay somewhat extra and get something actually worth taking pictures with.

I went in then, to an independent camera shop in town, staffed by old guys who have worked there for years - thinking that I might actually get advice from someone who knew what he was talking about, as opposed to going to Currys (Yes you might get someone who knows his stuff, but like many on here, I've had some hilarious comments about tv's in Currys over time).

So the point of my post is, I started by saying that I've heard if you're spending a little bit more than Tesco budget, you're better off getting Panasonic or Canon.
He said "No, It's been a few years since Canon were the best manufacturer out there". Went on to say that there weren't any really "bad" manufacturers anymore, but it was more a case of getting what you paid for.

He told me that there was a lot of heresay about cameras - "People think they're getting Leica lenses, and are they buggery" (I read this as a pop at Panasonic)

He said that under the £100 mark, you're not really going to get anything special, but the Samsung ES55 was as good as anything.
Went on to say that Samsung were becoming one of the best imaging manufacturers out there, and that my Canon A710 was possibly made by Samsung, except that the sensor part in Canons are usually made by Toshiba.

When I asked him then what would he recommend if I didn't mind spending a higher budget (For compacts of course - sky's the limit for SLR), I expected him to bring down one of his large stock of Canons or Panasonics, but instead he brought out the Samsung WB500.

Now granted, many Samsungs are "sexy" looking cameras, that WB500 seems to be, and gets some ok reviews - but this guy, in an independent shop, with presumably no axe to grind (He sells Canon and Panasonic too), tried to sell me a Samsung as "the best".

I always had Samsungs down as also-rans. Well confused now.

Is this something that's escaped me? Or is he talking balls

Check out the review sites for better information.
It's fair to say that Canon and Panasonic are indeed two of the best manufacturers out there but its equally fair to say that they're not always the best in each price category. Some of the alternatives, including Samsung along with Fuji, Olympus etc are equally fine, especially in the sub £125 range.

He's also talking balls regarding Panasonic not having Leica lenses. They do.
Just as much as Leitz lenses are exactly the same as Leica lenses, whether they are made in Canada or Solms. They are made to the spec that Leica specifies, not matter the geographical region.

Its like saying a Mondeo isn't really a Ford :cuckoo:

And, with regard to him wheeling out a specific Samsung - perhaps he's just got the best mark up on that particular camera? Just a thought.

I'd put Canon, Sony, Panasonic and Fuji at the top of any list of compacts. Check these sites for reviews....

The results I've seen in person and reviews I've read of Samsung cameras do not fill me with desire for the brand.

I've had several mates complain about woeful battery life with Samsung digicams, no idea if this a major issue.

I'm sceptical of any advice in shops these days to be honest - the internet is much more in-depth, un-biased and up to date than anyone in retail could be expected to be.

Thanks
It sorta crossed my mind that the Samsung might be the one he gets most profit from, but...well, I don't know. A lot of what he said sounded plausible.

What I do know is, I trust my own opinion. I had a play in his shop with a couple. Best for compact was the Canon Ixus 95, really quick focus and spot on. The cheaper Panasonic was a bit washed out, and the more expensive Panasonic (TZ7?) looked pretty spot on in all ways - but more expensive obviously.
So for "not the best cameras anymore", they sure looked and felt ok to me ;)

The Samsung looked and performed fantastically, but...well, I don't know - that's for me to think about.

Oh, I've not heard about battery life on Samsungs, but I've definately heard a few moans about battery life on Panasonics.

Looked into the Panasonic TZ7 when my father in law was looking to get a new compact - it;s the one he went for and I have to say it was ace
