Surprised not to have seen a thread on this... Fire Walk With Me DTS arrived on saturday from Play. Initial thoughts, I seem to have the canadian Atlantis release in an amaray, I expect the US R1 is in a nice New Line Platinum Series embossed snapper.... the canadian has french text written all over both sides which is a little annoying.

Strangely the disc has no menu sound at all, and the menus are static save the the special features which is a slow pan of the black lodge with curtains opening to reveal the LMFAP & Mike and then closing again, nice touch but odd without music.

The documentary is excellent and really leaves you wanting more from those represented, personally I would have happily watched all available footage, in fact Kyle Mclachlan barely says a word so I guess this is the same footage thats used for series extras. Some nice little Lynchian touches in the editing of it.

Did a small comparison between the Second Sight R2 and the R1 and the prints are pretty close, the R1 seems slightly brighter and more defined.

Soundwise the DTS track is excellent, only had a chance to have a quick listen to a couple of scenes, (not the nightclub scene yet) but the inset opening music is fantastic, and as always the exploding TV nearly had me off the sofa, even more so than usual.

Anyone else any thoughts? Especially interested to hear if the US R1 packaging is different. Seems the deleted scenese may now appear on the French R2 if negotiations are favourable which is briliant, but may also mean that I'll own 3 copies of the damn thing.....

1) If the R2 and new R1 look pretty close to each other I will be sorely disappointed as we were promised much better quality from this transfer - Lynch is supposed to have approved it himself.

2) US R1 does indeed come in a snapper from what I have read. I'm still waiting to get mine from DVD Boxoffice - maybe by end of next month then! Wonder which version of the cover I'll get. From the sounds of it I think I would prefer a snapper in this case.

originaly meant to post this ... but something strange happened .... so here it is anyway

Just opened mine from Play - and was really fed up to see it was the Canadian edition and not the New Line US one ........ but so long as it's identical to the US one ..........

another disc, same problem ..... this time Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back - again dual covers .... but I was more concerned about the inlay card - it's just a single sheet (again dual lang). What does the US version have as an inlay card???? <sob>

Ok perhaps a bit anal - but I paid the cash to have the US Region 1 discs - have never minded getting the US versions with a canadian sticker on the back - but now these are Canadian discs full stop.

Be warned Lynch fans - the Straight Story from Play is Full Screen !!!!! <shiver> and not the US widescreen version ........ or so it would seem.

Anyway I'm off to mull over this and reconsider using Play for future DVD buying frenzys :(

But now I have had a quick look at the disc

The Night Club scene has burnt on subtitles!!!! But worse than that the dialouge is now completely understandable on the audio track - gone is the powerful drone of the music, and that night club shouting at people for them to hear you feel, instead it's less intensive and the dialouge can be heard quite clearly ..... so why have the subtitles???????

I have some serious reservations YET AGAIN about another Lynch DVD release ......... it seems everyone I buy there is some issue to it - though I guess the Blue Velvet R1 was pretty decent ..... :(

The covers are english on one side and french the other but english has a a little bit of french on and vice-versa and the spines are exactly the same both sides. Seems a bit daft, why couldn't it be completely english on one side and french on the other?
The menus are the same kind at Davidlynch.com with white circles an red dots inside them joined by white lines and there placed over footage from the film.

Dunkrag - the version from DVDBoxOffice is the Canadian version with the slightly irritating French on it, too. I was deeply suprised to get it in the post yesterday morning.

Matt - the dual language thing seem to be the current 'look' that Allince are going for - My copy of Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back was the same also.

Never mind the packaging, though, shall be watching the film later.

One thing that does puzzle me though - I thought the DVD was only supposed to have one chapter stop, but it seems to have quite a few. Though the one chapter stop thing was a requirement of David Lynch.

I've got the US R1 of this disc, received from InterDVD. No inlay because it's in a snapper, to answer a question posted above.

Anyways, I've got some mixed feelings - but there's no doubt in my mind that this is currently the definitive release available. The picture is in a different league to the R2, which I also own. It may not be the sharpest transfer you've ever seen, but the colours look fantastically vibrant to me and there is very little speckling compared to the irritating print damage on the R2 release. Overall, the sound is also first class although there's not a great deal of opportunity to make the most of all channels.

On the downside - I was really disappointed with the nightclub scene. You can't complain about burnt-in subtitles on the print, because that's exactly how it was intended according to Lynch. However, the dialogue has definitely been brought up in the mix - which does render the subtitles unnecessary and negatively effects the whole ambience. Very disappointing, because this is such a favourite scene. But you have to admit, it does <i>look</i> fantastic...

The above reservation about the mixing aside, this is still far and away better than the R2 release IMHO. It's not perfect, but I'm just happy to finally see <i>Fire Walk With Me</i> looking and sounding this good overall...

<b>Edit</b>: Any chance someone could post a link to, or a scan of, the Canadian cover - I'm interested to see how it compares. Can it really be worse than a snapper? ;)
