Both started on ABC and I have a feeling at least one of them won't last out the season (place your bets). Plus they have a certain thematic resemblance so I thought it makes sense to lump them together in a thread.

Cougar Town was okay-ish, I laughed a couple of times. But it zipped along with such short scenes cramming in the jokes, I'm not sure the hit-> miss ratio is good enough. Plus nearly all the characters have the depth of a puddle. Cox's character seems to have a sitcom affliction of saying anything that pops into her head; for instance making inappropriate jokes with her son. That relationship is a bit strange and jarring.

There's an entire absence of shame, like it's trying to be the gender flip of Californication. Actually there are a couple of other similarities. Unfortunately it's on ABC with the strict sex rules, and they are trying to get the Desperate Housewives viewers, so it fails for the most part. If they slowed it down a bit and let the characters have some realistic or interesting conversations then there might be something there.

The first Eastwick episode was a copy of the first half of film (Witches of Eastwick). There is even a weird cameo of the bitchy woman who is the target of the film Witches (she throws up the cherry pips)

Rebecca Romijn was good, and very hot, but everyone else was weak. Even Due South's Mountie Paul Gross was not at all good. The main problem with it is that it removed all the subtlety from the movie. In the film the women slowly gain their "powers" and Nicholson's character is a genuine mystery who seduces them... only down the line did they release he was exactly what they wished for, only to find it wasn't what they wanted at all. This show just throws all that out and the Mountie just flatout says to Romijn's character he's there because he's everything she wished for.. then she doesn't question that at all. It's weird. The repressed librarian character just starts making people do exactly what she says in about 5 minutes, again not questioning it at all.

This show is my bet for getting cancelled! Twas crap, pointless and has nowhere to go. At least Cougar Town has a certain wit to it.

Didn't even realise they were doing the Eastwick thing....

I don't think either of them will last longer than a season, with at least one (or possibly both) not even making it that far.

Haven't watched Eastwick yet, but Paul Gross is no Ray Wise.

You wait till you see his 'party at the back' mullet. It looks ridiculous.

Dollhouse have got Ray Wise. That's probably better for him.

Chuff me cougar town was bad. The scenes were about 20 seconds long each, and all of them finished with a stupid little strum of guitar chords. It really grated. Won't bother watching again.

Got eastwick to watch next, but doesn't bode well by the looks of it.

I also got 10mins into 'modern family' and had to shoot myself in head, so that's out too.

Didn't mind Cougar Town, could definitely see some Scrubs elements in it.I'll give a couple of episodes.

Eastwick was just utterly dire.

Caught the end of Eastwick and thought it seemed utterly rubbish. My wife will carry on watching it as a guilty pleasure, though (in the same way she enjoyed Lipstick Jungle)

Helps that it is filmed on the WB 'small town' set they used for Gilmore Girls, so you can play 'which GG character used to live there' while watching it

Cougar Town was ok but really suffers from being on a Network rather than something like HBO, Showtime or FX. I like Cox (and she still looks fantastic) but she needs to dial back her performance in this, trying a little too hard. I'll stick with it for now.

Eastwick however was appalling. It looks ok & the leading ladies provide some nice eye-candy, but it didn't work on any level for me... as a drama, comedy or any kind of entertainment. If it lasts into November, i'll be surprised.

Urgh! Eastwick was dire! So unfocused and a terrible rehash of some bits of the movie (which itself bared scant resemblance to the original book). Don't think I can be arsed with this.

Cougar Town is created by Bill Laurence, who also made Scrubs, he even shoehorned his wife in again, yawn. The type of comedy and characters are similar to that of Scrubs, but worse.

If I hadn't noticed Bill Lawrence's name in te opening credits Cougar Town would have been more bearable.

As it was I got in distinct impression that Cox was trying to channel Zach Braff and not doing a very good job of it. We've seen that she can do a funny/quirky character so why not do a different one to JD?

Watched Eastwick with my other half this evening and we managed to pour scorn on it all through the 45 minute run time. How much plot did they stuff into that first episode? Why not leave the reveal of <s>Benton Fraser</s> Van Horn to right at the very end of the ep? It was littered with events that should have been saved for later in the series, not the first half hour.

Also, worst product name hiding ever:

Also hilarious is how that photog guy is meant to be so "ordinary", you know, with his perfect hair and model looks! :D

Oh you would notice that, Richie. ;)

I did expect the reporter woman (who has different sized nostrils) to let her hair bun down at some point in the series, ("Good Heavens, Miss Yamamoto -- you're BEAUTIFUL!""), but not in the first damn episode.

:D
It's almost as if they know it won't last, so they're rushing to the good stuff! It is a spectacularly badly executed show, the absolute worst detail for me was the way Roxie's sculpted 'boobie dolls' have their nips covered. Seriously?! So it's okay to talk about vibrators and sex but not ok to show a clay nipple on primetime in the US. ******* retards!

I watched about 10 minutes of Eastwick and although the girls are hot, I was so bored with the tralala fairytale desperate housewives voiceover vibe that I had to turn it off as they tossed their coins above the fountain.

Only the reporter woman was hot after she tarted up

Well both Eastwick and Cougar Town have been dumped by me now. Absolute tripe.

Add to that the dumping of Trauma and The Forgotten (neither was awful, but both were far too bland) and it's not looking like quite such a hectic viewing schedule for me this season.

It's great! ... Secretly enjoying that most of this season's new shows are rubbish, gives me more time for evening console fun. :)

Not watched this week's Cougar Town yet, so jury is out for that. Same goes for Mercy, liked the opener, but not so much this week....

Cougar Town this week was just dull. The only thing going for it is that Cox looks incredable for her age.

But that almost defeats the point of the show.
Cox bemoaning the fact that everyone is younger and prettier seems somewhat silly when she doesn't look that old and is in amazing shape.

Urgh, I now hate this show, not going to watch another. At the beginning with the kid failing asleep and them around the table it was exactly like a spoof of a 70's sitcom. Utterly terrible. After every sentence I could hear an over-the-top laugh track in my head. It just doesn't work and moves far too fast without anything happening. Cox is irritating, if I was her neighbour across the street I'd get a restraining order on her, she's clearly two crackers short of a full deck. The character is not as endearing as the show thinks she is.

Finally got around to watching the 2nd Cougar episode & it did nothing for me apart from cringe at Cox's horrible OTT acting. She seems to think that shouting = funny .... sorry luv, it doesn't.

Another new show crossed off my watch-list. :|

We watched the first two episodes of Cougar town this evening and quite enjoyed it. Although it was a bit weird that the sets had completely changed in the second episode and Bizy Philips hair had gone mad.

It's like a Scrubs/Desperate Housewifes hybrid, the wife loves it.

Richie

Urgh! Just when I'm about to dump 'Eastwick' they throw in a tantalising tease of a scene in the final seconds of episode 4! Typical! :D Now I'm interested!

I have to be honest Eastwick is growing on me, The Darryl Van Horne character is starting to become more of the impish sort that i expect him to become. And not to mention the real reason i keep coming back

I'm still on the edge of dropping Cougar town, the only real plus is that Cox looks amazingly hot for her age. But it's not a good sign if i'm FF scenes on a 25min show!

'Eastwick' is actually starting to develop quite nicely. If you set aside the fact that the acting is often pitched at the hysterical level of a caffeinated sitcom a lot of it is quite charming. If they continue the way they are this might become a decent guilty pleasure akin to 'Charmed' at it's best and with the girls' slowly developing supernatural powers, it certainly seems to be heading that way.

So far I've got Vampire Diaries - cos I'm told it gets better after 1x03.

Well, Eastwick's a goner! :(
This just in: ABC has opted not to order additional episodes of Eastwick, effectively canceling the freshman dramedy. The show has consistently finished last in its Wednesday-10 pm timeslot. ABC

Hopefully Melrose Place is next on the chopping block so they can pass the budget over to Smallville to improve the special-fx & afford to pay Erica Durance's wages for a full season. :D

Arh crap! I was actually really getting into it! Lindsay Price was awesome eye candy and after the third episode the plot felt like it was actually getting somewhere (unlike flashforward)

I dropped Cougar Town weeks ago as it felt like a dull repeat every week. It was basically just a show to show off how good Cox still looked dispite her age

Richie
10-11-2009, 09:09
Well that's 3 of us who were actually enjoying Eastwick! I think there are 6 more episodes to go though?
With Cybil Sheppard and Veronica Cartwright as 2 of the previous Witches of Eastwick this has started to get really interesting. Although Daryl Van Horne is basically neutered in the show (and just all mouth) he'd have to get around to bedding the ladies sooner or later or there wouldn't be a story and I've been enjoying how he's obviously slowly moulding the women's destiny from afar.
Tony, you obviously haven't watched it (beyond the admittedly weak pilot) as I'm willing to bet you'd enjoy it! And Melrose is awesome TRASH and I lurves it! It's not meant to be shakespeare! :D

hopefully they will wrap up the story in the 10 eps then if its been canned :(

seems okay in a "lipstick jungle/charmed" sort of way. It's undemanding fluff but it does develop nicely. Having now seen 9 episodes I am quite annoyed that it's been cancelled, I'm not holding out hope for any kind of proper ending when it reaches episode 13 but it's a real shame it won't have a chance to blossom as the most recent episodes have been a delight. I honestly don't understand why this show failed, it's not terrible (It's certainly far more enjoyable than 'FartForward') and okay it was never going to be an Emmy winner or anything (and it wobbled a fair bit at the start) but there are far, far worse shows that are hits. Had this aired on Sunday nights in the US in a block with Desperate Housewives and Brothers & Sisters I think it would've found just the right audience but hey ho, abc went for 10pm on Wednesdays! :brickwall

Well I hope anyone watching Eastwick on Hallmark in the UK gets to see all 13 episodes! I've been catching up on winter "to watch" tv and just watched episode 10 and 11 of Eastwick. #10 ends with some pretty mortal danger cliffhangers for all 3 female leads but then episode 11 picks up the (now very confusing) story sometime later! Turns out that abc in the US decided to skip an entire episode and wrap up the series with what was originally episode 12. Not only did this cause utter confusion but it "robbed" the audience of Roxy's confrontation with Jamie (you know, the one she's been having visions about for the whole series)!
Anyway, so I guess that's this show done as far as US tv is concerned, maybe Hallmark UK will get it right. Where are they up to now? They showed a marathon of episodes 1-9 just after christmas but have they got any further?
edit Oh I see they are showing them all in the right order with the final few episodes from this week...

I still don't like it, I try to give it another go every now and again but the humour is too forced, and there are too many catch phrases. Worth it for the last 20 seconds of the last episode though.
