View Full Version : Why is Anime treated so badly in this country??

At this moment in time i can only think of two anime titles that are truly treated well. Princess Monokono (sp?) and the forecoming Akira. Even Ghost in a shell has got problems with it's ilp-sync, forcing me to the very blurry R1. Castle of Castello (again sp?) is non-anamorphic, which give a disappointing imagne blown up on a 40" screen. The list is endless.

When will there be a HKL style label just for anime, bringing the best to R2 in the best presentation? It's not as if there isn't a market! And what about anime series?? Tenchi Muyo, Cowboy bebop, not everyone has a chipped player!

Other than the Japanese R2 (Kanedaa will know for sure) - none of the versions of castle are anamorphic

Have you also checked out www.madman.com.au from Australia - some of their discs are 2/4 encoded (I know Neon Genesis is), are PAL and are pretty cheap (10 quid odd).

well looking at the list of already released

Perfect Blue - but the R2 is pretty good, the R4 might beat it though (it may be anamorphic)
Blood - again out already on R2 (and identical)
Garasaki - big robots, meant to be reasonable
Gunsmith Cats is fun
Lain - weird but pretty good

can't comment on anything else on the list - I do understand they've released a long list of licenced shows recent though (anyone got a link ?)

A HKL style label would be a dream come true, but sadly I can't see it happening anytime soon. The closest thing is the possibility of Madman entering into the UK market (although the titles distributed will be the same as their R4 discs).

When you say 'its not as if there isn't a market!' I'd say that you're probably right, but I also think that anime fans are so used to importing that when UK titles are released, they largely get ignored as everyone already has them. This in turn leads to poor sales, so the companies don't really bother releasing much more. Its not our fault, but the companies who have basically shot themselves in the back by being so slack when it comes to releasing anime in the UK.

A recent example which is really very annoying is that of the forthcoming Columbia Tristar release of Metropolis. Originally scheduled for a March 12th R1 release, and April 23rd R2 release (not a bad delay) the R1 was delayed to April 22nd, now if they had kept the R2 date the same you have guaranteed sales, but nope, they delayed it to an unspecified date in July which will surely see most people turn to the R1 release?

Another reason for the lack of a HKL style label I *think* is that anime is damned expensive to license. I'm not saying Hong Kong movies are cheap, but I should imagine in comparison they are significantly less.....but I don't know for sure.

anyways....

LINK (http://www.madman.com.au/MMnews.php?NewsID=34) - the list of titles Madman officially have.

And trust me, wet yourself in anticipation of Excel Saga :D

LINK (http://www.madman.com.au/madboard/Forum2/HTML/000486.html) - here is a more unofficial list, but most of it is very likely by the sounds of things. Some great stuff in there like Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, and Love Hina.

Other titles I like that Madman have already released are the Samurai X OVAs, the Rourini Kenshin series in general is very highly regarded and i'm tempted to give it a go, but at 96odd episodes its a scary prospect!!

Excel Saga is indeed one funny series, the spin off from it (Puni
Puni Poemi) is even worse in terms of content. The other notable release would be Kenshin in R4 form. And the wait for End Of Eva has been far too long aswell, i just want summat to replace my fansub.

Dave: have you got the Love Hina Boxset arrive yet? im still waitinf for delivery :( cant wait for it though :)

Roberto - Bebop is probably still available from some places, www.dv-depot.com still have it, not cheap though.

God of Anime :D sounds like a Stephen Chow film (now that'd be sweet!)...

bedford - oh yes, i certainly do have the Love Hina box. Amazon delivered it with a nice £8 customs bill :( making it £30 in total which isn't exactly my ideal price bracket, but hey, what can I do!

I think the box is great, very colourful - i'm not as picky as the folk on the AoD forums so i'm not fussed about the logo etc...its just a nice box :) Disc is good too, and while we don't really care about it what i sampled of the English dub didn't sound too great.

If they can't get Love Hina right then they don't stand a chance with Excel....hmm, Puni Puni Poemi you say, i'll have to check that one out.

I dunno about you lot, but it really just does not appeal to me at all.

Thats a pity about the customs bill, but i wouldnt be upset to get my precious series, i ordered mine from MT for £19.99 which i thought was good as the boxless one was £17.99.

I got my bebop set from dv-depot, i think it was about £130 inc. shipping which was 3 days.

Im still not completely sold on bebop though, the complete lack of a decent story arc (as in eps spent on it, not what it was about) really annoyed me, alor of eps are hit or miss, but some of them really are excellent.

ggrant: why did you post that, there wasnt even any reasoning, some people may see that as an excuse to have a flame war :argue:

for goodness sake is no-one going to release anymore Lupin III stuff with english subtitles and english dub (more for my ilittle cousin who enjoyed COC) ?

I am a big fan of Lupin III and its a major bitch as no-one seems interested in releasing the films or tv series over here or in region 1

i REALLY didn't need to know that - damn thats a good price :(

Something else I like about the boxset version is that the Armaray case used is clear so you can see the full length front cover artwork that is reproduced on the inside, whereas the standard version has a black armaray case meaning you have to turn the sleeve artwork around...

mr_woo - you're in luck, an American company (can't recall which one) owns the rights for most of the movies/tv-series if not all of it I do believe. Its possibly funimation, i really can't recall but i think they plan to get the first titles out this year.

kcxdev: don't know mate, ive been holding off buying until a uk company had it in stock so i could get it quick, i found it last thursday on the site (had to search, didnt see it listed) but at that price i wasnt really gonna argue.

If anyones into their bleak series then Now and Then, Here and There is a good choice, i pre ordered ages ago from boxoffice and it turned up last friday, 5 eps aswell which aint bad either.

Couldn't agree more with Roberto's first post, Anime treatment in this country is dire. Even when there does appear to be a half decent release (Mononoke) the extras are poor.

I've decided to go R1 and pay extra for what should be better treatment. (Tenchi Muyo:Ultimate Edition and Arslan arrived this morning :)).

Got Neon Genesis Perfect Boxset on order from DVDBO for £90 and am waiting for the Now and Then, Here and There boxset to appear. Sounds like a decent package with the extra disc (be interested to hear exactly what your opinion of it is Bedford).

Could we have some short reviews of some of these anime we are talking about here? There are just so many i that i have never seen and knowing TV they will never show it! So the only why i have ever have the chance of enjoying anime is to look at reviews and take a chance! I just don't want to spend £130 on Cowboy Bebop box set and end up not liking it!

So can people please give a little insight into some of the following, including does it end properly (use spoliers please :p ) I'm after some great cyberpunk. i don't want pure comedy and an element is good as long as it doesn't get too silly.

Neon Genesis Perfect Boxset
Cowboy Bebop
Excel Saga (never heard this one before!)

I just trust the opinon of the forum members more. :)

Excel Saga is about as silly as Anime gets, but it really is funny.

If you have never seen Evagelion then i'd just get it as its the best anime there is for keeping you thinking, the first time i saw the series i wasn't impressed at all. Then i kept reading about all this fuss about the series so i decided to watch it again, and my brain melted, i must of seen the series over a hundred times and still dont understand everything. The series does end properly, but it was remade (the last 2 episodes that is) into a movie form known as End Of Evangelion, which is the true ending to the series (and a whole lot more disturbing) im not giving any spoiliers away as even the smallest would ruin the series.

But if you want to know everything there is about Eva then http://www.evaotaku.com/ should be a spoiler fest (and i mean spoiler fest, everyones been warned  )
