Sounds like good news to me.

I think it's often amusing how it's shoe-horned in - I was watching an episode of Chuck recently, and Big Mike was offered a "tasty footlong five dollar subway sub", in a completely natural piece of conversation.
If it's permitted in US/foreign shows in the UK, don't see any reason why it shouldn't feature in UK-produced shows.

Seems underhand to me. What's the problem with a "x-factor brought to you by.. blah" at the start and end of the adverts? That's much more honest way of doing it. It's a slippery slope and ITV have gotten us a little closer to hell. They might already do it in the US but they are hardly an example of the wonders of TV advertising that we should aspire to. Maybe ITV could, shock horror, make better TV shows then more people might watch and they'll get their £100 million with shoving Coke down the throats of a fattening nation.... whacky notion I know.
You just knwo that it'll be done realyl badly by ITV though, like everything that they touch. The 24 Dell / Ford plugs are bad enough. Can't wait to see them trying to work a Coca Cola into their next costume drama :D

The Sopranos was desperate for coca cola placement.

Will it result in the likes of soap pubs selling "real" beer etc ? and then how would that sit alongside all these calls for alcohol advertising to be banned
As long as its subtle fair enough, but can not help but think ITV will turn it into something akin to the section of Waynes World
Jeremey Kyle "thats a lovely necklace"
Member of audience "thank you, its arden from argos"

That's the main problem with the concept of product placement. If they sneak it in subtle then no one notices, they HAVE to be excessive.. thus TV gets ruined.

Wouldn't matter how good the programmes were, I gave up watching adverts the day I got my TiVo and now Sky+, years ago :)

shhhhhhhhuuushhhh... don't tell them our secret. :suspect:
Sky+ is not a secret and part of the reason why they want to advertise during shows now. Doesn't bother me, but it makes Bond movies look naff a few years later is all.

at least big brother won't have to waste money by sticking white labels on everything lol

Game Shows I have no problem with product placement because they could be prizes contestants win anyway. Same with talk shows as long as they don't turn into hour long informercials.
TV dramas, comedies etc. Now this is where it bothers me. Some programmes do it OK. Some take the mickey out of it (like 30 Rock) while others make it look so cringeworthy it makes me want to avoid the product like the plague. I worry that scriptwriters integrity will be compromised.
IMO, ITV are in the **** because they produce crap TV and have done so for years now.
I'd be quite happy for actors to wander around with packets of cornflakes sellotaped to their shoulders if it meant no adverts or licence fee :)

 That's a good one.
This is so subtle, I can hardly spot it.

UPS?
Doesn't Superman get thrown into a Marlboro truck in Superman II?
I can just see Marple, after solving the case, settling back for an ice-cold can of Pepsi Max.

That Runaway Bride reminds me of Castaway with the constant shots of Fed Ex packages littered everywhere. I guess those poor souls didn't get their 10:30am delivery. ;)
I won't mind if it's just for props or onscreen adverts, but even in the US it's pretty intrusive. The Biggest Loser always has some kind of product placement segment where the trainers just happen to mention that chewing wrigley's gum is a great way to beat hunger or that Jenny O turkey products are really low in fat or that Subway is a really good option because you can tell them how to make your food. I don't mind it, it's just the way they try and pass it off as something that would be ordinarily be bought up.
The bit in The Truman Show : This is how I imagine ITV will do it in Coronation Street.
Barmaid: Would you like a pint of John Smiths, random punter?
Random Punter: Yes I would. It's smooth and creamy texture is just what I need to help me relax after a hard day in't factory.
Bring it on :(

When talking about product placement, it always reminds me of this....
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/zLWoawkcx00&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/zLWoawkcx00&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
 :D
This is the sort of thing I'm referring to. Not at all subtle
