Well, I know virtually nothing about classical music, but I do enjoy music that contains (what I assume to be) a strong cello part.

I stumbled across some Bohren & der Club of Gore (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=8) and really enjoy it in the evenings - very moody, like a film score.

I'm thinking of 'Chill Out Classical - Cello', with a melancholy edge.

Thanks :)

Simple answer to that one: Elgar cello concerto.

Bach isn't often melancholic but his solo cello works are often used in movies as are Benjamin Britten's solo cello works. Many of the Bach pieces are much more approachable than you might expect.

Check out Gayane's Adagio which was used in 2001 and Aliens.

try Symphony No. 3 by Górecki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symphony_No._3_%28G%C3%B3recki%29 This was a big 'coffee table' hit but is very moving and powerful or the String Quartet No 3, which is probably a bit easier listening.

or Barber's Adagio for strings - some cello and violas - used as main theme in Platoon and many others. And there's a good version by William Orbit (but on the album Pieces in a Calssic style - the single had a bit of a drum machine and didn't need it!)

There are samples of these off the wikipedia pages - can't say enjoy but you know what I mean.
