Just found this online

http://www.starz.com/originals/Spartacus/ScreeningRoom#/spartacus:-full-trailer/

John Hannahs in it not the tital character, and from the trailer looks like a bit of blood.

Could be good from the trailer it does but I will wait and see.

Crikey Crixus! This looks amazing. Historically dubious, of course, since Colosseum-style gladiatorial games didn't really get going until 50 years after Spartacus's time.

I enjoyed it though I imagine many wont. At times the vision of the producers badly exceeded their CGI budget and I can see that many people wont like the way the fight scenes were shot.

Me I liked the gore and the stylistic way it was shot and coloured and choreographed. I read on another forum that this show was best looked at as a live action graphic novel a view point I agree with.

They spent the whole episode never mentioning our heroes name.

The only thing I didn't like was the swearing it didn't feel organic to the speech of the characters but more like kids on a school playground acting up to show how big they are.

In an interview Lawless says that its not until 1x05 that the show really hits its stride oh and they've already ordered S2

zantarous
23-01-2010, 14:11
I thought it was good but agree with the swearing. Now don't get me wrong I don't find it, and I don't mindit in bucket loads either. But this had LOADS and did feel forced.

The budget for this must be tiny as the CGI was aweful, that bit where the Spartacus is saying goodbye to his wife (who by the way is extreamly hot) was terrible you could tell it was all done on a soundstage. And the slow motion is going to get real old real fast.

But all that can beforgiven as it is quite entertaining.

TonyG
24-01-2010, 16:18
Despite the appalling acting on view & some dreadful dialogue (their use of swearing, which I normally don't mind, just made me wince), I found this to be a delicious guilty pleasure. I loved the look of 300 which this clearly steals from, and despite their lowly budget, I thought it still looked great for a tv production. The OTT blood & dismemberments in particular are just awesome. Throw in plenty of hot babe nakedness & i'm more than happy.

MrHat001
25-01-2010, 21:02
It just about works if you try and view it as a live action comic. But the CGI is laughable, the sets are ropey and the acting is wooden.

I'll kip watching it but mainly for boobies.

God this was one of the most awful things I've ever watched..........really looking forward to next week.

Solid episode this week. The acting on display was a little better, Hannah seems to be enjoying himself, hamming it up big-style.

My only concern was that this week, too many male knobs on view for my liking, although Lucy's boobs almost made up for this imbalance. :D

Getting use to the formal way they often speak and the actors are getting better at delivering it, well except for the lead who's still a tad wooden. Though he's got good chemistry with the blonde gladiator.

Still think whoever decided that Lawless should play a red head deserves disembowelling.

Definitely going to watch the rest of the season.

loving this at the moment, the mix of blood sex and language with a strong storyline wins me everytime. The comic book fight scenes , aka 300, I find very immersive. This is a winner for me.

TonyG
07-02-2010, 21:02
The acting is definitely improving a little as it progresses, upgraded from porn-movie-bad to movie-bad. Story is getting better too, with a couple of predictable directions, avoided this week.

Lucy also looked ravishing in her seduction scene this week, although it was slightly ruined by the "I need your **** inside me!" porn-movie dialogue. :D

This show continues to improve. Really enjoyed Spartacus's visit to the Thunderdome this week. The action scenes were seriously nasty/dirty & surely this episode must go down in the record books for the most use of the word "cock".

Speaking of male genitalia, did anyone else fall for that scene with the "lady" who first appeared, showing off a fine arse, followed by impressive breasts, then ruined it all by turning around & walking towards the camera, with her "tackle" out in glorious HD? .... YIKES!

Same. I was about to give up during the second episode, but the strange relationship between 'Sparty' and John Hannah's character (Brutalus? Ludicrus?) gave it a bit more depth and I've been enjoying it more since then. The most recent episode is the most gory to date, only the comic book violence keeps it tongue in cheek. Good stuff - looking forward to the next one.

Yeah, it's like the opposite of a swear-jar, the writers must be on some sort of bad-language commission, gaining an extra $50 bonus for every naughty four-letter-word pasted into the script.

Script-writer1: *giggles*

I doubt anything would be cut, why do you assume it would be? It's not the 1980s anymore!

There's a Metro article, which I can't link to as they include screenshots of v. rude scenes, where the headline is "Spartacus 'too rude for British TV". Relevant quote out of the artcile would be:

MediaWatch UK, a group that demands less nudity and a higher standard of programming, believes Spartacus should never be shown in Britain.
'We can no longer ignore the fact that what viewers see on television has an impact on society,' said director Vivienne Pattison.
'Even the Government is asking the producers of soap operas to include safe-sex messages in their programmes now. There are numerous studies linking exposure to violence on TV with violent behaviour at large and if there is the slightest possibility that explicit sex and violence on screen can cause this harm, is it worth the risk in the interests of entertainment?'

****! Andy Whitfield has cancer! :(
http://ausiellofiles.ew.com/2010/03/09/spartacus-star-andy-whitfield-has-cancer/#more-6737
Sad news: Andy Whitfield, who’s currently starring in the Starz drama Spartacus: Blood and Sand, has been diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma and will begin treatment immediately in New Zealand. As a result, production on the second season of Spartacus — which was scheduled to get underway later this month — has been delayed.

Whitfield’s cancer was detected early and his prognosis is good. “I’m receiving excellent care, and am feeling strong, positive and determined with an army of support behind me,” said Whitfield in a statement.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Andy,” said Starz president Chris Albrecht. “His health, of course, is our primary concern. He has our complete support during this difficult time.”

it's not actually meant to be about the Spartacus is it? Battiatus said he named him after the legend in the first episode, but maybe i misread the statement..Its is about the slave who leads a revolt, and they are using known facts to flesh out the show such as names. And the historical Sparticus was named after an ancient king and no one knows his real name to this day.

Reading up on the history will possibly spoil what the writers have got planned for certain characters if they follow what their real namesakes did

Bloody Brilliant

The wooden Spartacus of the first few episodes is long gone now we see the man at his best and at his lowest. Good as this episode was and with excellent performance from Lawless and Hannah (surely the best role he's ever played) this episode belonged to Ilithyia strongly played by Viva Bianca

Seducing a 15 yo to her will was masterful.

Alas for Varro, really enjoyed the friendship between him and Spartacus. Who surely is going to be even more focused on the arena than before unless Mira can restore his belief in humanity.

And just how many feuds is Batiatus going to solve with blood?

I had to pause the episode when the boy did the 'thumbs down' and walk around saying "No, no, no..!" Just didn't want to see what the inevtable end was going to be. Then I did and I was all What has this show become?

Looking back now, with Varro accepting his wife's baby and him saying to Spartacus, "Come visit us in our happy family home when you earn your freedom" was a bit too much like, "Here's a photo of my childhood sweetheart..." in war films.

fake edit: I half expected the slow motion gush/splash of blood red erupting from the jug of wine when Spartacus smashed it against the wall.

One of the things he said was that they shot all 13 episodes in one go. There was pilot followed by a break So no time to learn the lesson from it. Hence the obvious development over the show especially from around 1x04/5 in direction writing and acting (esp dialogue)

I must admit I think the 'rebellion' may be a step too far for this show.

'By Jupiters Cock' it is however THE best show available on TV at the minute. I just hope they do not ruin it by following the truly awful appraoch of Prison Break or even worse Lost.

It is in your face action, snatch and down right bad acting but it so so works. I have shown this to 10 or so people all of which after ep3 have said its awful, but by ep6 they need thier next fix of Spartacus (that is men and women). Steven S. DeKnight has found the Midas touch with this one.

I have just spent the last two days watching episode 3-10 and wow, what a quality show. I am sure most would just dismiss it as violent and lude but within it is a very engaging and entertaining story.

Strange how the first episode of this seemed like badly acted, derivative crap and yet it goes from strength to strength and this is now my favourite program on the telly.

Loved this weeks episode. I suspect next weeks episode will be utterly mental!

I suspect next weeks episode will be utterly mental!Yep though I fear we'll lose a bunch of our favourite characters, cos once the rebellion takes place and who knows whether Batiatus or Lucretia will survive it? And Ilythia will surely take a back seat as she wont be interacting with our heroes or the Ludus (if it survives in any way)

Navia's supposed virginity seemed to be magicked out of thin air for the purposes of the plot though :suspect:

Not really, althrough not explict, it was obvious she wasn't used for sex like the other slaves

Was she not fingering Lucretia in an early episode? Maybe I dreamt it

I believe so, but just because she went 'knuckles deep' does not mean she is not a virgin ;)

This went from ropey sword and sandals to probably one of the best US shows in recent times :). Cut out the gore and the fight scenes and it still retains such a brilliant storyline where I am still engrossed with the characters. It's a contradiction where you are rooting for the baddy and the goody at the same time :D.

I thought it was a NZ production?

What an episode, this show goes from strength to strength each week. Loved the way the last two guards were beaten to a bloody pulp by just the broken handle of a practise sword.

Isn't the ending a two parter, over 2 days?

Apparently they're going to do a short prequel mini-series to try and keep the show's momentum going while Andy Whitfield gets medical treatment.

As for that finale, well ehfaugghaugoagriheaorgargnigninrenh... sorry lost the ability to type then because of HOW FRICKIN' AWESOME IT WAS. Loved the horror movie vibe of the second half.

I got huge grin when they first said Doctore's real name. :D

My one concern is how the series will fare without John Hannah, he really was the heart of the show. I think the casting of Crassus (and Caesar) is going to be instrumental in quality of Season 2.
