View Full Version : Free alternatives to flickr?
Any good ones?
Looked at shutterfly, seems too good to be true, and Picasa (which is essentially rubbish and steals your photos).
Photos need to be available for sharing/archiving and no compression.

I know it's not free... but Flickr really is worth the paltry figure they ask of you for using it. Or you could just use the free version if you don't want to pay?

Not sure. I'm a Flickr man, myself, and only use photobucket every now and again.

The free version doesn't offer "Original" sizes. Think thats the problem here.
I'd never use ANY online service to try and achieve. What happens when the service goes bust, shuts down, deletes your photos, your account gets hacked, etc.

This is true.
I had to read that quite a few times before it made sense.. I presume it's meant to be 'Archive'?.. :)
In which case, absolutely.. It's an online showcase, nothing more.
As above, Flickr does what it says on the tin, and really doesn't cost that much for a year.
I have a Photobucket Account for random hosting, and I hate the thing. It seems very slow/messy compared to Flickr.

If you just want storage and not a fully featured album system you could use MS Skydrive, which gives you 25gig of free storage.

... Picasa (which is essentially rubbish and steals your photos).what do you mean by this ? Is there some dodgy detail in the T&Cs ?

So long as it doesn't happen at exactly the same time that your hard-drive fails at home, you're fine.
If you keep copies in two locations (home and flickr) then you reduce the chance of loss. The further apart those to locations are, the better. Same with backing up any data.

An online service can be a useful offsite backup for your best work. If your house goes up in flames you still have the online copies available. Chances of it going out of business at the same time as your house goes up in flames should be fairly small. You should still have physical backups at home as well though in case of hard disk failure.

Just had a look at this skydrive, sounds really good but when i went to upload some photos you can only upload 1 at a time? any way around this?
yep, there's an activex drag and drop upload tool you can use but you have to be using MS Explorer in order to get the option to install it. It should appear on the same page as the upload one.
Oh i see now, was using chrome :)

I installed Gallery (http://gallery.menalto.com/) onto a bit of my website. Does what I want it to and it's free - and nobody will be stealing my pics :D
But to be fair, no one wants your pics. ;)

Just seen this mentioned on a LR plugin site - http://www.expono.com/
Looks to be a more professional-looking version of flickr; only 1gb for free, $45 for pro account.
