View Full Version : Taking of Pelham 123
Anybody looking fwd to the release of this on R2? (around April?) This is another movie I have 'unintentionally managed to avoid' over the years but by all accounts its a classic.
The R1 version is apparently a disappointing edition both in terms of extras and picture quality.
Will the R2 be any better in either dept?
From the little I've read - I doubt it.
Any more info on this film or its imminent R2 release?:)

Saw this when it was originally released; very good, very well paced, written and directed with some nice dry humour from the ensemble cast.
Matthau and Shaw are excellent as you would expect; it's a very surprising film in many respects (comedy? thriller? action movie?) and one that is difficult to pigeonhole.
I love it.

So many films, so little time...
dvdstreet have a scan of the cover and I think it says it's a letterbox transfer so the same criticisms of the R1 effort will probably apply.
Great film though

Sensationally good film. A delight from beginning to end.
Certainly, the R1 disc is not what it might be, but for the time being it has been as good as it got. Cheap, too, at under $10.
Also due in R4 in the very near future. Same transfer again?

Definately looking forward to this. First saw the film about five years ago thought it was excellent. Heres hoping for a decent quality disc.

Sorry to dig this up again, but I have just seen the first R2 review of this release here (http://www.dvddebate.com/article.php?sid=2663&mode=&order=0) if the guy wanting info is still interested ?
Anyway, seems like a solid transfer, but unfortunately non-anamorphic and extra free too.
Thanks for that - yes I was still interested:cool:

The review from the link above states that the R2 transfer is identical to the R1.
Sorry to bring an old thread back to the top but I thought it better than starting a new one.
I was recently given this film on DVD as a gift and (yes I realise I'm ignorant) had never heard of it.
Having watched it all I can say is what a superbly crafted film with a great story and some fantastic acting.
I would echo everything thatv John Hodson said above and if you haven't seen it then it's well worth a watch. :)
Hadn't seen it for years till I picked up the R1 version for a fiver on ebay.
I really enjoyed it and couldn't remember what happened in the end until I saw it (although I had a tiny feeling that the end thing would be involved in the story somewhere if you see what I mean!).

Yeah, good suspenseful film.
Crops up on the BBC now and again.
Great performances from the late Walter Matthau and Robert Shaw.

Looking to buy this... before I do - anyone know of any re-issue coming soon? Else I'll pick up cheap somewhere.
Thanks
is there nowhere to get an anamorphic copy of this film on DVD?

There's a dreadfull TV remake staring Danny Wahlberg! That sometimes crops up on late night TV to say it should be avoided is a bit of an understatement.

No special edition. Only hope is if they ever decide to make a remake, as otherwise can't see it being a big enought film for Sony (MGM) to bother with a SE, or even an anamorphic reissue.

Love this movie, caught it on BBC 2 about 6 or 7 years ago and fell in love with it.
It's one of those films I stick on every couple of months, and it still grips me.
Excellent!

- Do they still have the death sentence in this state?
- No.
- Pity.
Soundtrack is also very cool.

Saw this for the first time last night: great characters, unique one-liners, realism to words and actions which is unusual in action films. I suspect they had someone in mind when they wrote the Mayor. Love that ending.

I suspect they had someone in mind when they wrote the Mayor.
The actor bears an amusing resemblance to Ed Koch, but the film was made several years before Koch became mayor. The casting was pure coincidence I think. Koch, incidentally, is a fan of the film.

Come on MGM/Sony/Fox or whatever you are this week, please release a special edition anamorphic DVD. This film deserves royal treatment :)

Didn't this film influence Reservoir Dogs or something?

Only inasmuch as they both feature gang members who cover their real names by using the names of colours; great driving David Shire score BTW, and, I think, snappier dialogue than Tarantino's flick.
Mr. Blue: Excuse me, do you people still execute in this state?
Lt. Garber: What? Oh, execute. No, not at the moment.
Mr. Blue: Pity.

Hey, I already quoted that (sort of, from memory). In your face, Hodson!
It could be also said to have influenced Tarantino's flick in that Mr. Blonde goes doolally in much the same way as Mr. Gray does in Pelham (and similarly makes life difficult for the rest of the gang). Except no ears were harmed in the making of the picture.

The photo of Ed Koch (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ed_Koch) on Wikipedia looks familiar alright.
Correll: Boy, I never thought I'd see the day when talking to murderers took priority over running a railroad.
Lt. Garber: Get off it, will you, Frank? My only priority is saving the lives of these passengers.
Correll: Screw the goddamn passengers! What the hell did they expect for their lousy 35 cents - to live forever?
The screen writer, Peter Stone (www.imdb.com/name/nm0832099/) also wrote Charade (1963), and Father Goose (1964); both Cary Grant-starring must-sees for me.

For those who can receive Irish telly, Robert Shaw can be seen in Force 10 from Navarone (1978) (www.imdb.com/title/tt0077572/) this Saturday 8/7/06 at 15:00 on RTE 2. This appears to have been his penultimate film before he died of a heart attack at 51 the same year.
10/7/06
He also plays the title role in the Super Technirama 70 Custer of The West (1967) (www.imdb.com/title/tt0062844/), which was shown (also in full screen) before Force 10. No sign of the thesp in next week-end's schedule, though.
I haven't seen it in years but it is a superb film that I really must pick up at some point.

Already been one on TV in 1998 with Edward James Olmos. Been shown a few times as recently as last August/September on Movies 24 and Hallmark.

Seen it?
This passed me buy. Is it as bad as it could be ?
:)
Havn't watched it myself yet (got it on DVDr) but the reviews on IMDB say Olmos was the only thing worth watching.

Oh dear... John Travolta and Denzel Washington, with Tony Scott doing his whirl-the-camera-round-on-a-bit-of-string thing... 2009 :(
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1111422/
The only good thing about this is that we might get a SE of the original... 2 disc, anamorphic, lots of extras please inc. director's commentary (record it now whilst he's still around... 83 this year!)
