View Full Version : Just finished The Wire
I am Sad. It was a brilliant show, standouts from Snoop and Omar. Didn't realise Snoop was approaced by Omar irl and she is basically playing herself.
I need something else (American) in my lazy life.
Have seen the following
Six ft Under
Sopranos
Currently on True Blood
24 :gag:
Heroes
Lost, well 1 series..zzzz
Like gritty shows.. Is The Shield worth bothering with?

:D it's a great show for us sarcastic people-haters, believe me. Otherwise, do Deadwood, which is slightly more demandingly awesome.
The Shield
Deadwood
Oz
If you haven't seen the above, you need to.
Don't diss House - it's class.
The West Wing is also awesome (more so than House).

Was talking about DM. :)
I didn't diss it either. On S1 episode 2. It's alright.
Will give The Shifeld a crack for now. Thanks.

Its a shame as season 5 was arguably the best of the lot (and hasnt been bettered since)
Try Deadwood as parts of that are fairly grim (one episode in season 1 particularly)
Generation Kill - it's only 7 episodes, but it's awesome.

Agreed.
Definitely check out The Shield, it's probably a tie with The Wire as my fave show of the last ten years.
The first three seasons of CSI Vegas are also very good - albeit in a 'wrap it up within the episode' kind of way.
I really struggled with True Blood and Sons of Anarchy though.

The Shield ****** me off primarily due to the fact that Ross Kemp and his henchmen always got away with their brutality and dirty tactics.
After the first 5 episodes or so, I just gave up. No interest in watching and never will. Might give deadwood a check, though. But a cowboy drama? Hmm sounds boring.

Deadwood is about as far from boring than you can get, and better than The Wire for me.

any recs for my dad, he's been devouring the west wing and he's now on season 7. so need a new replacement for him, he wouldn;t enjoy the wire and went off the sopranos as too violent. we both enjoyed the 4400.
maybe 6 feet under?
or commander in chief or damages? would they be suitable for that "politial intreague vibe"
SIMON ADEBISI

Damages sounds right.
Six Feet Under might offend him if hes a bit old fashioned. Its a fantastic programme though.

well he is all over the gayness (if thats what you mean). thought not sure he wants to see men at it as such.
i have just found i have damages season 1 still wrapped on my shelves :D

Id bet he'd like Deadwood. Every father in the world likes westerns.
The language in it is mental though
Damages is good fun CJ, you're Dad will enjoy it. It has some excellent acting and keeps you guessing until the end.

Don't think anyone's mentioned Dexter yet, have they?

OK. Might give deadwoody a go. Dip the toes on youtube first and see what it is like.

will float deadwood at him as well. got him and mum to try dexter, they didn't enjoy it. Life they do. make me a supermodel they like. and project runway
I'm also wondering whether to try west wing as i now have season 4-6 here to sell on. i find it a tad frantic and feel a bit exhausted at the end of each one, its not relaxing.
I enjoyed Rome on its first run and I'm surprised at how re-watchable and even more enjoyable it is.
I've just finished Deadwood and loved it, but if your Dad found The Sopranos too violent, then I wouldn't recommend it for him. Deadwood illustrates just how worthless human life was (or still is?) and some of the scenes that aren't strictly violent, still made my stomach turn over. Al getting his stone 'inspected'

Damn, now i want to watch Deadwood again.
"Swegen!"
"San Francisco Cocksuckah!"
The Shield. More enjoyable than The Sopranos.
Bah.
I missed The Wire. Set the season pass for FX, and then never realised that it expired for some reason. BBC2 and FX have then continued to gallop ahead with episodes, without me getting any chance to catch up. :(
OK, I'm just about to climb into bed, and can't be bothered to check right now - are the seasons so far on Virgin Media on Demand? I'd rather look there than shell out £££ on the full box-set.
Series 2 of The Shield now. Cheers, pretty addictive.
It just gets better and better, I'd also recommend "Oz" but it's probably a little more brutal than Deadwood and The Shield.
I'm still looking for something like the West Wing, I've tried a couple of shows but I normally just end up watching The West Wing again instead.

Deadwood is currently repeated on Sky late at night.
OK, House is pretty good if not repetative. His accent isn't almost as bad as it is in Street Kings.
The Shield is good, not in The Wire's ballpark mind, that show was amazing, may have OD'd on that.. "Omar comin"
Breaking Bad is pretty good, first season just finished on FX but you can pick up R1 box set reasonably cheap.
Looks good simong, looks good. Love crime/drug dramas. Mrs is gonna kill me!
Don't think anyone has mentioned the awesome Homicide: Life on the Street either, which was also from Wire creator David Simon. Before The Wire came along I think it was pretty much regarded as one of the best cop shows on TV. NYPD Blue took a lot of the limelight when it aired though.
Been watching loads thanks to this thread. Breaking Bad is terrific, some seriously great acting parts in this.
