1) Apocalypse Now Redux
2) Apocalypse Now
(yes there are enough differences for it to be a separate film :p )
3) Platoon
4) Bullet In The Head
5) The Deer Hunter
6) Full Metal Jacket

Apocalypse Now wouldn't even be on that list if I'd not watched it again after being annoyed with myself that I didn't like it the first two times :D Fantastic film, and made very different (and slightly better) by the Redux version. I prefer the British end credit sequence though :)

Platoon is a favourite because of the last 20 minutes and a few key scenes, I didn't much like most of the film but a few elements are brilliant.

Bullet In The Head isn't really a Vietnam War film I know, but it's one of John Woo's bestestest in terms of gunplay and some powerful scenes/shots.

The Deer Hunter's just excellent innit :p

Full Metal Jacket is my least favourite Kubrick film and one that I don't feel fully comfortable watching for some reason... it just seems a little staccato. Still an excellent war film though - and as Kubrick said, it's a war film not an anti-war film, which makes a nice change.

Rambo II respectfully declines from a position in my top six :D And The Killing Fields isn't a Vietnam War film so I can't say that :(

1. Casualties Of War
2. Taxi Driver
3. Ulzana's Raid
4. Who'll Stop The Rain ?
5. Go Tell The Spartans
6. Apocalypse Now
7. Coming Home
8. The Deer Hunter
9. Dead Presidents
10. The Green Berets (a terrible film but a fascinating one since it suggests how Hollywood might have handled the war had it been rather more popular in the USA)

I think "Casualties Of War" is a marvellous evocation of the madness of the war which is extraordinarily moving.

"Taxi Driver", "Coming Home" "Dead Presidents" and "Who'll Stop The Rain" all deal with the aftermath of the war in a variety of effective ways.

"The Deer Hunter" is an extraordinary achievement which hovers on the edge of being totally phoney but just about falls on the right side.

"Go Tell The Spartans" is a vastly underrated Burt Lancaster film about the early days of the war. "Ulzana's Raid" is the finest allegorical study of the war and also a superb western in its own right.

"Apocalypse Now" is a failure in all sorts of ways but still one of the most unique films ever made about Vietnam and thus worthy of inclusion.

Back in the days of vhs rental, I saw at least twice a low low budget film called How Sleep the Brave.
These were the days you could pick up Driller Killer, I spit, Burning, etc etc. So am going back a while. Thing is can't remember if it was any good or not. Vietnam though.
Has anyone else seen this film?

Back to the point, it's got to be Apocalypse Now for me.
Redux stinks however. A complete rip off.

Just wandering if anyone knows of any Vietnam movies told from the Vietcong POV?

Most of the movies mentioned go out of their way to criticise American policy whilst at the same time glorifying the Heroism and depicting the suffering of the Americans involved, both before and after the conflict. Just be nice to see a different viewpoint, even if it is propoganda - there must have been a Vietcong John Wayne making movies somewhere????

And that is precisely why I only like Full Metal Jacket :) It mostly avoids these pitfalls...

However I agree that seeing a movie from the VC POV would be interesting.... Far more interesting than yet more self indulgent navel gazing and hand wringing from Oliver Stone.

WOW!!!

Nobody mentioned The Boys In Company C

Brilliant film that deserves a DVD release! Apart from that, I would have to say Platoon, Casualties Of War, and finally Full Metal Jacket.

I remember that! Still waiting on it getting a DVD release. But the main reason I rented it when I was a lad, was because it had a warning on the front cover about the amount of swearing! :)

Like you, I cant exactly remember to much about it though, but you can see what a few people thought at the IMDB, here (http://us.imdb.com/CommentsShow?82532) is the direct link.

The film did come out again on VHS, released as "Combat Zone", but its now OOP. I was bidding on a copy on eBay a few weeks back, but lost. :(

Gonna keep my eyes out for it though, and you never know, worse films have came out on DVD. ;)

A Bullet in the Head is my favourite. Though it's not warfare/combat orientated, it's as much a treatise on the effects of war on innocence as any other I can think of - I'm really looking forward to Woo's Windtalkers because of this film. I've seen it criticised as simplistic (compared to The Deer Hunter, which it does resemble yet outclasses in every department) but it packs an emotional gut-punch which, for me, is unforgettable. On the big screen it is simply devastating.

Taxi Driver gets a vote for the same reasons. By honing attention away from the technicalities of warfare and onto the psyche, the aftermath, we the real battle - over man's mind, sanity, and in Taxi Driver, his soul.

I like Casualties of War and Platoon because they don't shy away from the same truths, but ultimately they don't match up to the aforementioned. As far as film experiences go, Sammo Hung's Eastern Condors is much better than either - dafter, certainly, but tons more fun and much more inventive.

I never liked Full Metal Jacket that much, and Apocalypse Now kind of nullifies itself by being so crazy and wrought that it's more interesting than the actual war. Hearts of Darkness, the documentary, is a much better watch. Haven't seen Redux though...

Here goes:-
Platoon - Just Fantastic a Jem!! - A Vietnam Masterpiece!!
Born on the Fourth of July - The Ronnie Kovic Story!!
Heaven and Earth - This is a beautifully Crafted Nam Movie

The Above 3 are Oliver Stone`s Vietnam Trilogy
in my opinion the best nam movies ever.

Heavy Metal Jacket is enjoyable but Shallow,it was made in
London`s Docklands!! It has a false feel to It.

Apocalypse Now is Spendid in it`s scale but gradually
slips into surreal mode like a fantasy movie!

The Deer Hunter shows the devastating effect that a war
of this nature can have on people not directly invoved
in the war e.g. relatives mates etc. Superb Movie!!

Casualties of War has a great moral message with great
acting by Michael J.Fox and Sean Penn.

Just a few thoughts

1. Full Metal Jacket
2. Heaven & Earth
3. Apocalypse Now (Redux)

Anti-vote for Tigerland, particularly as it's not really about the Vietnam war it's just about boot camp, and FMJ did it better.

I'd give a strong recommendation to Spy Game which includes about 15 minutes of Vietnam sequences which are very powerfully shot; and it's a fine film, underrated I would say.

It's also worth watching Nixon for some of the political background; it attempts to provide an answer to the question "Why?" that is raised by most of the actual 'Nam films. It also includes genuine archive footage of some bombs being dropped on the jungle, and if you compare the explosion speed and devastation of real military explosives with the Hollywood version is positively scary.

I just found Casualties of War on R1 DVD, but haven't watched it yet. Does anybody know if Go tell the Spartans is available on DVD anywhere?

If you mean 'Three Kings' with George Clooney, that's not a Vietnam War film, that's a Gulf War film.

My choice has to be Forest Gump! Just because it hasn't been named yet! :)
