best (free) photo album web server thingy

Hi

I'm looking to make all of my digital pics available (secured) from a server running at home.

Ideally i'm looking for some software that

- automatically pics up new images in specified directories
- creates thumbnails of the images (which is what is displayed)
- handles a directory-type structure reasonably well
- happy getting the images from a NAS

It can be running on either Linux or XP (i'm going to use my old eeePC to run it as a server).

Something like wordpress and the nextgen gallery plugin? No idea how easy that is to build on a home box but I'm using it on a hosted site and it was a doddle to setup.
