View Full Version : Is it worth fixing my Kef subwoofer

I have a (now fairly aging) set of Kef Egg surround speakers. The Eggs themselves still work fine, but the subwoofer died a while ago.

I've not been too bothered up till now as I'm living in a flat and it would be a bit anti-social to have used it anyway, but I'm going to be moving to a house soon and it would be nice to get my bass back :D

So, is it worth getting the sub fixed, or should I just replace it? I enquired about getting it fixed when it first broke (couple of years ago at least) and Kef reckoned it would cost about 100 quid to fix, assuming it was just a case of replacing the main circuit board. Could I get a decent replacement for that sort of money?

Dunno. Which Kef system was it? There is a whole range of different eggs.

100 quid isn't much to spend on a sub in all honesty, probably worth looking at Richer Sounds to see what they have in.

HTS2001 speakers, PSW2000 sub - think the package was the KHT2005 (.1?). Had them about seven years I think? The whole lot is hooked up to a Yamaha RXV730DS receiver.

I know £100 isn't much of a budget, and I don't mind stretching that if I can get something reasonable. I'm no audiophile, so I'm not willing to blow hundreds on something that I really won't be able to appreciate. However, I'm just concerned that with the sub being far from new, if I get it repaired it may just die on me again and then I'd have wasted my cash.

Depends how much you liked it, I suppose. I dont think £100 would get you anything better than a Kef and if they're going to fix it, it should stay fixed for a while, I'd have thought. If you're happy with it, I'd spend the money on it, but that just me.

I think I had the same sub, there ws a problem with the amp which Kef knew about. Give them a ring as I am sure it will not be too expensive to repair.

I took my main board into KEF for repair (cheaper to drive to Maidstone than to post it) and they just replaced it, for free, on the spot. It was less than 5 years old at the time though...
