I have a friend (too far away to visit) who recently purchaesed one of the new 3D gaming monitors from the states.

The system that uses the polarised glasses as opposed to the Nvida shutter ones.

He got stung a bit on customs charges, and it having a few issues with it at the moment.

I thought the Nvidea method was better supported but I'm only guessing.

Has anyone here invested yet in a 3D Monitor and glasses system for their PC?

And/Or anyone got any opinions as to which system is the better one?

I was wondering what all this 3D stuff was all about - stumbled upon it when I saw a 3D demo of PC Resi 5 was being released.

I've never been a big fan of any 3D movie so will be interested to see if this whole thing takes off.

I know they are eventually working on a non glasses system but think that's still a long way off.

As far as I know (and I may not be 100% accurate here) there are two main systems. Both needed a special monitor.

The Nvidea one (which you would think would be a better more supported option) uses 120hz LCD shutter glasses (no wires) and a 120hz monitor which alternate the image 60 times a second for a 3D view of a game.

The other made uses a polarising system so only one eye sees one image on the special screen.

Apparently the prolem with this is, it's only really good in high contrast images and you can loose the 3D effect in low contrast scenes and you just end up with a blurry effect on screen.

Apparently games don't need to be specially written for this to work (not quite sure how it works in conjuction with a game to tell the screen what items are at the front or the back)

Kinda hoping I'd find out more about both systems from people who may have them running at home now.

Reviews don't always tell the full story.

Supposed to be pretty mind blowing when it's working well, on the right kind of game.

I would be very surprised if anyone on here has either system.

Well, I live in hope.

My Geordie friend (oooop north) has the Polorised version and he's on the dole due to a personal injury (not that's got anything to do with it)

I think it cost him in the mid/high £300's for the monitor and system. So it's not exactly BIG money for many of the people on here.

Pretty sure this is the system my mate bought from the states:

Here's the bill from my mate's 3D monitor he got a few weeks ago:

MONITOR £325.67
FOREIGN EXCHANGE RATE FEE £9.74
IMPORT AND VAT TAX £122 (ish)

He was not planning on the import and vat tax!

This 'personal injury' he's got..

Was it a bump on the head...?

I was presuming he'd lost an eye.

i used to have a pair of elsa revelators, that used shutter glasses and a driver that produced the correct image. Frankly it was the best thing i've ever used in gaming. Unreal tournament and Swat 3 were utterly transformed and really immersive. Everyone who had a go agreed it was fantastic.

I'd love it to catch on again.

He worked till he was about 40 / 45ish and either he was made redundant or something and he went to college to get a NVQ in programming.

Had to take 3 languages, c++ which he wanted plus 2 others he did not want to do.

Got some certs, but not really up to any REAL standard if you get my drift.

Floundered around on the dole for a few years (got into the habit of not working if you know what I mean)

Then due to smoking had a clogged vein near his foot, they had to remove the foot and a few complications get in, so lost most of his leg and is now in a wheelchair.

So let that be a warning to smokers out there !!!!!

So, in a wheelchair in a flat in Newcastle and thats his life from now on.

Oh, yes, 3D is coming on VERY strong now.

We have these two competing systems out there NOW that are compatible with many games.

And I read that 3D TV is what all the big boys are working on right now as the industry sees this as the next BIG thing, and to be honest they are right.

Moving from a flat display to a 3D one will be an even bigger jump than widescreen and flat TV's

Monitors are actually easier as at least you know the person it sitting directly in front on the screen, with a TV you have the added problem that people don't always sit in front of it.

How long it takes them to bring stuff out who knows.

The last time I looked into this, it was very possible with any monitor that could do 120hz or more, but at the time, HD tv's had just come in and all were limted to 60hz.

These days I see adverts claiming ridiculous refresh rate figures for HDTV's (200+?), so in theory you just need to buy the set of glasses and one of these modern HDTV's?

i already wear glasses, so this is a no go

contact lens for you I'm afraid, same for me!!

As above your post, it's pretty much standard that TVs now can cope with it, there was a huge article on the eurogamer website saying that it really has a chance of getting into the mainstream now, the key is to do it WITHOUT the glasses.

If they can produce a system where you don't need to wear glasses, I'll get excited.

If you can dig up an old copy of magic carpet, that came with a pair of 3-D glasses. Also a magic eye version of the game, not sure why that never caught on

The shutter glasses have been around for quite a while, I almost bought some 5 years ago or so, think they were around the £70 mark. They were meant to be pretty much compatible with most games, since they just replaced your graphics drivers.

Have been told by some that the effect they gave used to be really good.
