Well watched this on ITV the other night.
I can see why the film is so fondly regarded by many people.
It totally bypassed me in the mid 80s.
ITV's showing started in 2.85:1 aspect ratio and this lasted for around 5 mins, when to my disgust but not, I'll admit, my surprise it reverted to a 4:3 picture.
I think I may have a look at the R1 dvd.
I would say it is one of the best films of a generally poor film decade.

The R1 2disc set is definitely worth it with DTS sound, Commentary by Carpenter and Russell, deleted scenes and more. The cheapest I can find it is DVD Import (http://www.dvdimport.com/product.asp?productid=10066), £13.02 with free shipping.

Enjoy.

someone also mentioned ITV hasnt ever cut it

is it the butterfly knife scene ? cos ITV panned and scanned most of it out.

dunno know for sure about the cuts.. just remember someone talking about it, and on the commentary i'm sure Carpenter mentions something... i think it's during the street fight :)

it was me that mentioned it was never cut, but i never knew that it was originally cut by the BBFC so i'm not sure if that footage was cut or not in the tv showing (i think that makes sense :) )

However, the BBFC have passed this UNCUT recently for the double disk dvd release over here.

There's a good chance that the region 2 release will exactly the same as the region 1 (though region 1 will probably be cheaper)

Yep, you can just imagine what Joe six-pack, with his 4:3 tele would say about that:nuts: ;)

I watched this for the first time the other night and couldn't really see what all the hype was about. In fact, I thought it was quite bad (just my opinion of course). Russel was good but the direction was cheap, tacky and very dated, it looked so 80's. The action scenes were well-engineered but it was so over the top and quitre patehetic in some parts. Watchable, but really quite poor I thought...

I don't think anyone would accuse BTILC of being a *good* film :D
It is however cheesy fun in the same way Army Of Darkness is and that (I believe) is why it has so many fans ;)

I think anyone with an appreciation of action films could both enjoy the film for its throwaway substance and superbly self-reflexive styling.

Kurt Russell does nothing but talk big and look good. He only survives by virtue of others actions. He parodies John Waynes confident drawl and shows the same desire to lead but ultimately he cannot control his fate and his vulnerability is apparent throughout. This, of course, is the source of most of the humour.

Anyway enough of me getting up myself. All movies come down to taste. If you don't have the taste for this movie, then u dont.

Its just one of those cheesy 80's films which people enjoy !!

I love this film (although i couldn't tell you why)

The R1 is fantastic, another vote for that sucker !

I was of the same opinion - I love movies like Army of Darkness but I just could not get into BTILC
