Hi,
If any one could any any insights I would be most grateful.
I have a Samsung 709 DVD player and a Sony HTK170S amp and surround sound set. At the minute, I have a composite cable going from the DVD player to the amp. Obviously this only gives me analogue sound (but it still sounds pretty amazing!). I was thinking getting a digital cable to from the one digital connector on the back of the dvd player to the amp. But my problem is the on the back of the dvd player, there is about 6 connectors for digital in, Front R and L, Back R and L, Centre and Sub!
Is there a cable I can get to connect these two up for a much improved digital sound or am I being dumb in thinking this ain't possible?? Any help would be much appreiciated.
Thanks
Rob

Rob,
The sony HTK170 is not a DTS / Dolby Digital amp, so it doesn`t have the digital input you need. It does have a 5.1 input though, so you`ll need to connect the DVD players onboard decoder to the Sonys inputs. However I don`t remember the Samsung DVD709 having an onboard decoder, only a coaxial digital out and audio left and right.
Are you sure these sockets are not on the back of the sony amp? Or it could be that you have the Samsung DVD909, which looks like the 709 but with a jog dial, and has the onboard decoder.
If you have the 709, you`ll not be able to connect the DVD to the Sony HTK170 for digital sound, and will need to either change the DVD player to one with a decoder, change the amp (cheaper solution) or get a processor. Changing the amp is the cheapest solution.

Thanks Justin,
You are right, it is a 709, and only has a co-axial out put and the amp has 5.1 input.
At least I know now that I can't get any better than dolby pro logic on my current set up.
Bugger though I haven't had the amp setup long and it was £300 from Currys
Never mind!
Thanks again.

Hi,
Can anyone recommend a good DVD player from the Comet website, It has to be the comet website, so I can get it on my timecard, as I am a bit skint at the mo. Can to get one with a onboard 5.1 decoder, as above, pref and hackable. Also one for under £200. The reason I am getting a second one is for upstairs, but we don't need an amp upstairs, so a DVD player it is.
Any suggestions, once again, check out comet.co.uk as it has to be from there.
Thanks
Rob
Well you'll need a DVD with an internal decoder so the best one that fits the bill is the Toshiba SD420e at £199. It won't be multi region but you can get it chipped by Justin later I'm sure.
The SD 220 gets excellent reviews and I would imagine the 420 is merely a 220 with decoder.

Hi m8, thanks for the reply. That was the one I was looking at. How much do they cost to chip?
Cheers

Hi,
Also, checking the site, I see the PROLINE DVD2500, looks like it has on-board decoder, but I could be wrong. Have a look to confirm this, as I am probably wrong. Its also £90 cheaper.
Thanks
Rob
Don't know how much the chip is. I am sure Justin could tell you.
I'm sure the Proline is perfectly acceptable but you will get a far better quality picture and sound from the Tosh.

Vernon! I Got the Toshiba 420e and it works perfectly fine! Picture quality is good as well as sound and yes it does have an inbuilt Dolby Digital Decoder. And Forget paying £199 for it! I Got mine for £159.99 from richersounds!
