View Full Version : Personal pension - protected and non-protected rights ?

Hi all,

Got my latest personal pension statement through today and thought I'd ask a stupid question.

In the bit where it says what the pension might be worth when I retire it says

Non protected rights: Your fund could buy you a yearly pension of ....

Protected rights: Your fund could buy you a yearly pension of ....

The stupid question is; obviously the amounts won't be known til retirement date but should I be adding those 2 figures together to work out what I'd get ? Or would I only definitely get the protected one and MIGHT get the non-protected one ?

Also, the letter mentions about being currently contracted out of SERPS (or S2P as it is now called) and that people who are 43 or older (I am currently 41) should seriously consider contracting back in (and went on to talk about Govt capping). If I was to contract back in, I presume the payments to the Protected rights would stop but I would still get a "Protected rights" fund at retirement age ?

TIA for any help.

Regards,
