I'm looking at changing my buildings and contents insurance and Swinton Insurance seem to offer a very competative quote, but in their guide to the 'Contents' section (Page 12) the following stuck out like a sore thumb:

WE WILL PAY FOR:
13. Audio, Visual and Computer Equipment Accidental damage: while in the home to television, audio or video equipment, DVD players, digital set-top boxes, games consoles, personal desk top computers and computer equipment;
to receiving aerials, satellite receiving equipment and masts fixed to the home.

WE WILL NOT PAY FOR:
13. Damage to: CDs, DVDs, audio, video or computer discs, tapes or cassettes;
camcorders, video cameras, cameras, hand-held electronic games or toys, mobile phones or portable audio/visual media players;
computers or computer equipment designed to be portable.

Loss or damage caused: while the home is unoccupied or unfurnished;
by computer viruses;
by pets.

The cost of remaking any film, disc or tape, or the value of any information contained on it or recovering any digitally-held media.
Loss or damage to items in the open (except for receiving aerials, satellite receiving equipment and masts fixed to the home).

Now, upon reading this, I came to the conclusion that if I'm burgled and my dvd collection is stolen I can make a claim but if my collection is damaged in some way (lets say by fire) then I can't claim. Is that right?

If that is right, then can anyone recommend a company with decent premiums that DOES insure ones dvd collection?

does read that way - also doesn';t cover laptops nicked/or camcorders or psps/ds. pretty big exclusions.

most dont say all that. usully if its in your home its covered. apart from by pets maybe!!

I would look at More Than

Last night and this morning I've been having a good old search around, getting quotes from as many providers as I could. "More Than" did seem to tick all the right boxes so have gone with them and have saved just under £200 than if I'd renewed with my current provider.

Thank you CJ and Nicola!

I think they are referring to accidental damage specifically for those items (eg. dropped/scratched etc.) rather than damage caused by flood/fire.

Read the first page of Section B again.
