View Full Version : How do other people get such good deals when they threaten to leave networks?

Everyone I know seems to get the best stuff practically thrown at them.

Today I asked O2 to give the W995 for free instead of charging £50 for it because the same phone is free at £35 a month inc unlimited internet at Three and frankly it wouldn't have cost £50 a month ago if it had come out.

They flatly refused, which is a pain but there you go. Still, it narks me that I've only once managed to get any sort of deal like that from a phone company. They never seem to really care otherwise.

Does everyone else just pay way too much for their phone usage or something?

I just said I wanted to cancel as I had reached the end of my contract with vodefone, they tried to say they could do me a good deal if I stayed, I just kept saying no thanks as I could get a getter deal when starting again and shopping around, in the end they almost begged to as least let them give me a quote.

They quoted and gave me a range of free phones I could have, I said thanks but said I would shop around and call them back. Phoned back after looking around and said I would like another phone instead and if they could do that I would stay, they agreed.

As with Sky, I think your really have to mean your leaving, if they think you're bluffing you will not get the best deals.

Thinking of going through Phones4U (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=137) to get the (free) W995 for £25/month, admittedly 18 months, but i get a decent signal at work on O2 and a lot of others struggle. Don't know if it's worth phoning up O2 itself to see if they match that deal since i would be going from PAYG to pay monthly.

make sure youre talking to retentions not cancellations.

I asked for the PAC after and they sent it to me so I meant it. :D

Well that's a pretty amazing deal at £25 a month. Maybe I'll go to the hateful Phones 4U if they can keep me on the same network at that rate. Even with the unlimited net bolt on it'll still be 32.50...

You ring O2 and go to the 'I want to leave' department so I'm not really sure who it was. I did have a lengthy conversation. Whether Yvonne spoke to someone else about possibly getting me a better deal or made a cuppa while I was on hold is a different matter. ;)

phoned up O2 themselves today and they were cagey about the deal they could offer as they wouldn't have the phone available for 'about 3 weeks' told them about the deal and the bog standard call centre bod seemed to think it would be free from them on the same contract

not sure what to do now

Incidentally you can only get 18 and 24 month contracts these days from the main suppliers directly, Hex. :(

I know 12 month contracts have been unavailable from O2 for a good while now, all the others still seem to offer them as an option of some sort in one way or another though i haven't looked at going to them directly.

Weird with this handset though, my mother had a look at upgrading to the W995 on her contract (£25/pm) and initially they were saying that the handset wasn't available but would be free when it came time to upgrade. When it came time the handset was going to be over £190 on 25/month, over £90 on £35/month and free on others. So do the call-centre bods know the score or if i phone back in a couple of weeks am i going to end up getting charged for the handset, hmm..

Jeez! What are O2 on at the moment? I have 3 contracts with them at present for the family, rang up enquiring about the W995 & was told that I would need to be on a £75.00 PCM tarriff to get it for nothing:lol: Wouldn't even match the deal I got offered with my 5800 back in March...PAC codes on it's way:oh-hum:

£75????

They were offering it for free at £45/month when I was asking.

My number supposedly transfers over today.

I can do without the internet as it's got wifi & it's on orange for £25.00 600mins/unlimited texts so see ya O2...£75.00 sheesh!

that's not really true. I have and only consider 12 month contracts. Therse are with Vodafone, but I would never consider an 18 or 24 months contract. The phones don't last that long. I also don't pay diddly for my phones, but then my bills are regularly over £100p/m, so it's possible they give me preferential treatment.

I just started my 1st non-12month Contract with o2...its a 24month Contract, but I get a replacement handset after 12 months....

Jesus! I'm not surprised if you spend that much. Are you on the worst contract in the world or something to be spending so much? I didn't know Voda still did 12 month ones. You can get them from Carphone Warehouse and the like but it seems 18 and 24 month contracts are the 'standard' now, which is infuriating.

That said, my W810i is still working now and it's 2.5 years old.

nope just a busy chap who uses his phone. I do call a massive amount abroad which which doesn't help either.

You might want to get one of those O2 PAYG international sims with the free minutes to do more of those calls. A guy I worked with used to use those cheap call cards for calling abroad but I think it still cost him stupid money.

I'd guess that retentions probably have access to your bills.

If you're like my dippy girlfriend and manage to spend £200 a month on your mobile, they're probably much keener than if you're like me and top up with £15 about twice a year.

My missus just called O2, she's been with them six years and the deals they offered her to stay were rubbish. She just asked for her PAC code...so it isn't just you TheoGB!

Yeah, it's all down to that. The stupid thing is that I do make a load of money with them when I go abroad and given I have an antipodean fiancée this is not an infrequent occurrence so you'd expect they'd want those extra big bucks.

So far being on Three has been okay. I went for their lower internet rate but I think I'll have to beef it up to the full 'unlimited' one really.

Always worth getting your PAC code as you may then find that they contact you to keep you as a customer. People often give up as this stage - you have to be prepared to call their bluff unfortunately.

Yeah. Well Three was clearly a terrible decision. Reception's been bad in places I didn't expect it and their contract terms are actually pretty bad. Oh well, only gotta wait 18 months :|

What's Orange Maps? Is that free service because the phone comes with Navigation stuff and Google Maps in any case.

02 has been good to me for the last few years, giving me free line rental (via cashback) each time, No new phone but then my current one calls/texts/sufs/takes pics and thats about all i need it for. agreed an 18 monnth contract last time but just means less hassle in 12 months time getting another free deal. Though they only gave me 200 texts as they say thats what i use on average. I liked my 1000 before, even if i never used that many.
