To be honest your screwed no matter who you go with, my best bet would be go on someone else's license, especially as you are still learning so won't be able to drive on your own anyway.
A few companies offer named drivers their own NCB's now.

You'l be a bit knackered as a prov. I looked into getting insured on my folks' car but it was too much corn. After i passed and got a full licence, i found tesco to be the best. It was still expensive, but far better than all the rest.
Direct line werent too bad either.

If you watched that episode of Top Gear, you'd see that it doesn't even need to be much of a car for the insurance to cost that much, and that was for a newly qualified driver not one on a provisional licence. They were getting quotes in the order of £6-7k for cars worth less than £1000.
Best bet is to be named on someone else's insurance if you can, to build up some NCB, but even that is going to cost a fortune I'd think.

Trouble is with prices like that it will just encourage people to not bother insuring their motors at all..!!
£500pm for insurance is just complete madness..!!

Magazines like Max Power are worth looking in as you'll get insurance companies who are targeting "higher risk" drivers, so you might have more luck.
As for buying it, just stick it inside a copy of Razzle to hide any embarrassing glances from those around you.

Word of warning.
Avoid Quinn - an Irish insurer operating (fully authorised) in the UK. They can offer some pretty competetive prices for provisional license holders, e.g. £1200 when rest of market wants £2000. However, as soon as you notify them you have passed your test the premium will sky rocket.
Quite simply, a provisional license holder is accompanied and therefore, theoretically a lower risk. Once you pass, you transform into the stig overnight.
When shopping around try putting a second driver on the cover as well. Someone like your mum or dad will bring the rate down. Just ensure you are honest when stating who is the main driver / registered keeper because otherwise you will just be buying a worthless piece of paper if you ever have to claim.

I had the same with Quinn. My gf is taking her test next week and I renewed last week. I checked Quinn's prices for when she passes to find the price goes up!
I ended up at the Green Insurance Company, with quite a good price.
