View Full Version : Misleading trailers
What have you been to see at the cinema on the strength of the trailer only to find the film barely resembled it ?
I nominate Vanilla Sky for looking like a fairly straightforward drama on the trailer and being anything but.
The American TV spot for Shakespeare In Love which markets it as an action movie is pretty good....

I am sure that a large majority of people would like to nominate Star Wars : Episode 1 The Phantom Menace.
When i first saw the trailer it looked amazing....the rest is history.
I find both the trailers for The Closet and Amelie very amusing as neither contain any spoken dialogue (other than character names). A move that I can only assume is to prevent putting people off seeing a film that is in a foreign language! :)

I would disagree wholeheartedly with the trailer for vanilla sky being misleading. It follows the same pattern.
We start off with David Baines being a womaniser so to speak. Then in the trailer we meet his true love...then we see him have a car crash. Then it takes a turn for the weird. We see him all alone, we see a load of text and images editing frantically after another indicating that it seems like a nice heart warming drama but then it takes a sinister turn....which is exactly what happened in the movie. great film. best one of 2002 so far. Better than LOTR.

I don't think the trailer made that much difference to the majority of people who went to see it.
I've seen heaps of movies on the strength of the trailers that have turned out to be a waste of time.

The trailer for The Beach was a bit misleading, I thought Leonardo Di Caprio was trapped on the Island by a bunch of psycho drug dealers and trying to escape, especially when it showed him doing excercises in the jungle "Rambo-Style".:(
The film was good though -but obviusly not what I expected :)
PS: MI2 was misleading aswell and I was dissapointed when I couldn't find the trailer on the R2 release (if its there someone tell me!!!:)). Because the trailer looked amazing and the film...er .....wasn't IMO:(

The trailer for EP 1 misleading???
When I first saw the trailer I thought it the first Star wars film for decades and it was. What's misleading about that?

A Beautiful Mind looks like a government conspiracy from the advert, but from what I've heard, it's more about him trying to deal with his mental illness and romance.... Still, I'm gonna see it, looks really good :)
Oddly the trailer for The Killer describes it as a 'thriller-comedy' for some reason. It's a pretty awesome fiilm for sure, but a comedy? I think not....
Reminds me of the classic Homer Simpson quote...
Why did you think I took you to all those Police Academy movies? For FUN?! Well, I didn't here anyone laughing! Did you!?
:D
I thought the trailers for Star Wars EP1 were really good. Yes they got me excited for the film (Exactly what trailers are for) and I like the twin plot structure.
The teaser trailer is all about the discovery of Anakin and his start towards becoming a jedi.
The theatrical trailer is all about the tax dispute, sorry i meant trade federation war :D
The UK trailer for mystery men - doesn't know how to advertise the film at all let alone what the film was about, thats the impression I got anyway.

That line just cracks me up every time I hear it! :D
I strongly remember the trailer for "Battlefield Earth" which made me purchase tickets up front to see the first screening.........................
Life has not been the same after the day I got to see it
the horror......................the horror
