Lead track 'Crying Lightning' was previewed last night and is available for download now. Who's heard it?
Wasn't sure on first listen, liked it more on 2nd listen. Good lyrically but not as 'instant' as previous singles.

I really like it. Not very Radio 1 friendly but that just makes it better in my book.
(BTW it's on their Myspace page if any one wants a listen.)
You can certainly tell Josh Holme produced it.
Josh Homme will do the trick, really got on with some of the later stuff they did. Quite looking forward to the new one.

I haven't heard it. But it's the Arctic Monkeys. If it's a single, it'll be all over radio 1. ;)

Ho yeah they'll play the hell out of it but it'll stand out like a saw thumb.

I like it - got a nice, menacing tone to it.

Will it, I'll come in my pants all day long if it is.

Seems alright, but I'm old-fashioned and want 'singles' to be a bit more immediate, the kind of thing where you'd engage the auto-return on the old dansette and leave it playing all afternoon.

We'll have a whipround and buy you a box of mansize nappies.
I'll listen to it later. MySpace blocked here.
And, Douglas, I prefer songs that grow. "Instant" songs often become annoying very quickly.
I'll listen to it later.
Cor, can't wait.
It's decent btw JV.. ;)

Wow finally someone has stolen the 'Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster's' Act....only not nearly as good naturally.
The Horrors did that already
LouBarlow
07-07-2009, 18:34
Didn't mean it was a bad tune btw. Sounds very different, which is what you should be aiming for with a 3rd record really.
I quite like it, it certainly has that desert session feel to it.

On a side-note, revisited 80's Matchbox B-Line disaster, and their debut is still blisteringly great. The follow up also is still brilliant and proof of the advances acts should really make when progressing between records.
New material in september, although I believe they lost their lead guitarist to NiN just recently.

thought he left in a huff. Over James Blunt of all things IIRC

Well, the Taste Police were just a dry run for shenanigans elsewhere on the DVDF.
Johnny Vodka
08-07-2009, 12:08
Aye, but some of the taste police IIRC shared the same love of the AMs as SS did, although they stopped short of wanting to kidnap the singer to keep him in a 5-years-in-the-making dungeon. ;)
Mr Majestik

Back on topic.
Liking the new album although it needs a few plays to get into. It's definatley a more mature sounding record and the finger prints of ginger rock God Josh Holmme are all over it. That said the big show stopping ballads are the stand out tracks. (At least at first.)
(BTW i wouldn't be surprised if SS hated this new record.)

30-07-2009, 20:34
Also, wtf has maturity got to do with anything? Tommy Stinson was 12 when he joined The Replacements and 18 when he played on one of the finest records ever made.

"New, mature direction" is usually just a euphemism for "they've gone all boring".

I know what you're on about here, but to be honest it does sound alright to me. It's not anywhere near as immedate as the debut, but definitely above average.
Mr Majestik
31-07-2009, 11:22
For Mature basically means the lyrics aren't about drinking alchopops in the park any more.
Been listening to it again and it's a great album despite what old cloth ears Barlow thinks. :)
Like it too on first listen - QOTSA influences all over it like a rash mind

Ah, but is it good early(ish) QOTSA or recent boring QOTSA? The single does have that QOTSA dirge sound rather than the spikiness of "Feel Good Hit Of The Summer" or "Go With The Flow".

Don't like this album at all.
Their first album was the best and the this together with the last one haven't matched it.

Thoughts now it's out officially? The silence probably says it all but I stopped listening to it within about 3 days.
Mr Majestik
30-08-2009, 17:11
I'm still listening to it. And if anything it's a grower.
They lose a few fans who just want more copies of the debut album but for the rest of us we get a band developing their sound and growing up gracefully.

30-08-2009, 17:22
Meh. I hate when bands 'grow'. I just listen to a different band instead. Ramones FTW.
Mr Majestik
30-08-2009, 17:30
Great as the Ramones were all there albums were crap after the first 3.
Give it time to grow. The third album is always difficult. People hated Led Zep 3 when it was first released, especially that stupid twirly thing on the sleeve. But look at it now.

Didn't like the single and I don't listen to the radio much so I only heard it once or twice. But I've picked up the album now and after 3 or 4 listens I think it's great. Waaaaayyyyy better than their second effort, especially the balads like Cornerstone, which is just plain excellent.

Cornerstone is a very cool song.

If he has re-regged he can't be posting as it'd be noticed within a nano second, very distinctive style iirc.

I'm still struggling to get much from it. OK, but sounds like he's taken too much imspiration from his work with Last Shadow Puppets but without the quality of that stuff or their old AM stuff, IMO.
douglasb

They (or some management fella) have chosen 'Cornerstone' as the 2nd single - ironically the one track that sounds most like their earlier stuff. Weird that.

Me too. Two tracks on the album just about do it for me, the rest I am quite happy to file under 'never-listen-to-again/delete' on my iPod.
A shame as I loved their first two albums.

Where's the love for this album?
Obviously it is so different from Whatever people say... that it throws you at first, but my God I'm loving this now!
There's not much humour in it, but the lyrics are still interesting and clever, and the music is just fantastic, better than the previous two albums IMO.

After a few listens, I really like it on the whole - though I've a preference for their more melodic tracks rather than their 'in your face' cheeky chappy sings - so not really too keen on the first track, or Potion Approaching.
I think my faves are some of the middle and end tracks - especially Fire and the Thud, Cornerstone, Dance Little Liar and (probably my fave) The Jeweller's Hands.
Influence from the Shadow Puppets album is quite noticable, as mentioned before, and the hand of Scott Walker, which was a big influence on that album..

My favourite two tracks!
Saw these live last night at Wembley Arena, to say i was unimpressed would be an understatement.
No energy, no charisma, just Turner standing in one spot and really looking like he would rather be somewhere else, once he did try and involve the crowd as they were probably all asleep it was too late. The set list was poor, the new songs got a lukewarm response - while the tracks off the first album especially went down really well, that seemed to be the only time the gig came alive.
I saw Green Day the week before and they were just like a band in a pub compared to them.
Shame as i see them a few years ago and they were really good, i dont know if its cause Turners up his own arse or what. I should of stayed at home and listen to the CD i would of have more fun rather than robbing me of £35.

Pretty much how I felt at Sheffield last Saturday mate, they were terrible, in their home town aswell.
The most they could muster was "hello sheffield" which he repeated a few times, the sound quality was ******* awful and the atmosphere was appalling.
The band had no stage presence and as you said looked like they would rather be anywhere else then on stage.
Complete and utter waste of 30+ quid, the support act Eagles of Death Metal were a ******* joke aswell, terrible terrible band which is a shame as they are supposed to be in someway linked to Josh Homme I think.
They should be made to sit down and watch the footage of the Elbow gig at the MEN to see how to play an Arena, that was an amazing gig experience.
Friend at work saw them last night. She actually got so bored she left before the end!

Strangely NME think that the new songs were well-received by the crowd!

Going to their Wembley gig tonight so hopefully it'll be better than most reviews of last night's that I've heard. NME is pretty much the only positive one.
NME sucking up to Arctic Monkeys shocker! Who'd have thought ;)

They must have played a secret second night at Sheffield Arena then as when i went the atmosphere was great (even for the new songs), the sound was fine, everyone around me was dancing and support act were good. Admittedly they didn't chat to the crowd much but they aren't exactly known for the witty banter.
I saw them in Sheffield as well, first time I could get to see them and I wasnt impressed at all either. Dont get me wrong I enjoyed the songs but just expected more from them, they did give off the we're here playing our songs, not bothered about you lot and now we're off!
To say it was their home crowd they could at least acknowledge us more, I couldnt make out what Alex said at the end though, sounded like, "Im not feeling well, bye", dropped the mic and left the stage, band carried on the song for a couple of minutes and then exited and the crowd were left wondering, is that it!?
I was standing at the concert and infront and to the side of the mixing desk in the middle, the atmosphere was good enough, plenty of beer (and gawd knows what else!) been chucked about, a few scraps kicking off but generally it was well behaved but then maybe thats just me getting old!!
Anyway, wont be going to see them again but will continue to enjoy their music (at least for the time being).

Thought last night at Wembley Arena was a good gig but missed something to make it a memorable, great gig. My main annoyance was how uninspiring they were with the setlist with the new songs all seemingly bunched together and this is coming from someone who does love the new album.
I just felt that with their back catalogue, there was nothing stopping them separating each new track with an older, faster track such as Teddy Picker or Fake Tales Of San Francisco. The disappearance of the latter track from their setlist was a real disappointment. I'm aware that they have moved on from that kind of band but they still need to acknowledge that side of them.
Still, I thought their performance was great. Alex seemed to interact quite a lot with the audience and the whole band put in a tight, impressive show. They just maybe need to learn how to craft a set that won't have massive lulls even if they do need to promote the new stuff which I understand.

Manchester gig last night was pretty decent. See what people mean about the set list, seemed to drag for 3/4 songs after Crying Lightning. But pretty good overall.
seen them at the terrible glasgow secc last night.
disappointing setlist and glaring mistake of missing out some key songs. also gig had to be stopped 5 times due to crowd trouble, totally unecessary.
i hate how they finish with 505... certain romance far better ender.

25-11-2009, 16:27
When you say 'crowd trouble' are they getting a yobbish/Oasis crowd in now? Or was it just overexcitable kids?
I saw them at Reading on 06 (I think) and they had a lot of ******* in the crowd then.
I love 505 though - superb song.

Saw them at Nottingham and no trouble, although there was more bottle throwing than normal. Agree about the song choices, they really need to play more to the crowd, there were one or two dirges which could have been replaced with older more popular material.
