What the hell? Itunes charge for episodes that are broadcast free? Am I missing something here?

It's free on iPlayer. Why should the BBC subsidise the privilege of selling for free on iTunes?

Exactly. Buying it on iTunes, gives you the right to digitally own, I know to some it sounds strange, but there is some logic to buying it digitally to some.

I've always thought buying on DVD was a bit different though as there is packaging and a physical product etc.

Not really, you could say the same about music and CDs...yet people still buy digital downloads.

The Commercial rights to BBC produced programs are either owned by the Independent production company OR if produced inhouse BBC Worldwide. The BBC is allowed to air the programs for free and place them on iPlayer BUT further sales have to go through a commercial arm (either the Independent production company or BBC Worldwide) and this is why when you buy a digital download or DVD you have to pay. If you don't wish to pay then you can keep a copy on your Video Recording device and then back that up

the main reason for buying it is to put it on other devices like ipods.
