Whoaa There!

I was after the Blue Bob CD as well as the DVD but for both together it works out at about £65!! And that's before Mr. Customs gets his dirty hands on them.

And I had such high hopes for DL.com. I'm going to have to think long and hard about this. :(

Are these definitely for subscribers only? I had heard they were going to be available in the store for non-subscribers as well, but as the store still doesn't appear to be open I guess you are seeing these on a members only page?

I've been thinking about signing up anyway - only the lack of broadband access to properly enjoy the content has put me off until now. If these discs are only available to subscribers then I'll get my credit card out this very minute... :)

<b>Edit: </b> Ignore me - I just got into the store by following a link from the LynchNet site... the one off of the davidlynch.com homepage was still taking me to the "Working on it" animation. Ordered the short films DVD, the Blue Bob CD and a couple of posters. I'm going to have to take out a re-mortgage in anticipation of the customs bill... :(

Why bother? Anyone deriving anything from this film would have done so from the first VHS release.
A truly pointless effort.
I have a deep-seated hatred for this piece of self-indulgent excrement.

:( For subcribers only? Awww man this isn't cool! Been waiting ages to buy a proper dvd of Eraserhead. Will it eventually become available to the normal shops and online retailers?

In which case, don't buy it!

On the other hand, those of us who first saw it in glorious black-and-white 35mm twenty years ago, fell madly in love with it then (God knows what else is in my all-time top ten, but <I>Eraserhead</I> has a permanent place there) and have been waiting for a half-decent home version ever since won't begrudge him a cent.

I've deliberately avoided the <I>Eraserhead</I> DVD releases thus far because I was hoping for something like this.

Cheers Jazzatola! Beautifully remastered it may be but at roughly £50 thats a lot of cash, but it would be so very worth it to see it in original widescreen:D

I just went to order them both, Eraserhead is available for backorder only, you've got to e-mail them to be put on a list?

Is this what everyone else got or have I missed the boat?

Yep, Eraserhead's not actually released until 1st April, as <b>Malick</b> pointed out.

I realise it's not out yet. But I thought you could pre-order it, not just e-mail someone to let you know when it's ready?

Just out of interest what do you have access to if you subscribe to the Davidlynch website? Do you get to look at art that hes created or other short films or photos?

There's been a few comments on forums and Usenet groups that the content isn't updated that regularly, but I couldn't comment as I've resisted the temptation to subscribe so far... on my pathetic 56k modem it takes long enough to download the introduction pages. Can't get broadband where I am unfortunately. Goddamn BT - when will they offer ADSL to those who actually want it!

Thanks pmdf, all of that sounds pretty good, Im pretty interested in the artwork side of it but its a shame about the slow connection and subscribing buisness.

I'm a subscriber, with only a 56k modem, and YES it is painfully slow, but well worth checking out, if only for a month (around 7 pounds).
There's 2 chat room (X-Room & Y-Room) and David Lynch pops in for a chat every so often.
The menus are typically Lynchian and the animation and cartoons are very funny.

I've had real problems trying to get the site to load properly and I too only have a 56k connection. I tried to register but it just wouldn't load for me.

Can anyone tell me how much P&P rates of the DVDs etc are to a US address. I know someone who would probably ship/them it on to me if I decided to buy anything... and of course if I can eventually get on to the site properly.

Cheers - Andrew

I believe it is about $10 shipping for internal US orders.

The price does drop dramatically for multiple orders. Maybe it would be an idea to get a few people together who each want a set and place one big order to split the shipping costs. I don't mind co-ordinating it if there is enough interest.

What do people think?

I'd be interested in this for the Eraserhead set <b>dunkrag</b>. The shipping costs seem to consist of the $28 initial cost and just a dollar or two for each extra item, so it would be a worthwhile idea.

On another note - has anyone who already ordered from the site had any confirmation email or anything yet? I haven't had any sort of contact since placing my order for the short films dvd last week, and my credit card hasn't been charged yet... just wondering if my order got through properly considering the initial teething problems the store had.

I received notice that my copy had been shipped on 26/02 and I placed my order back on the 20/02. It does seem to take a week or so to process so I wouldn't worry too much.

I'm raising this from thread from the dead, did anyone actually order & receive these.

I check the website on a regular basis and Eraserhead is always unavailable, the short films is in but I want to order them together as the postage is very expensive.

I hope so...

Did anyone get the short films disc? It's $34.94 for the disc and $35.00 for the shipping, I really want to buy it in case it goes out of print before September but I don't want to have to pay $70.00 in postage to order it now and Eraserhead in September.

I can't believe the delay on this. God knows what Lynch is playing at. I'm sure it will be worth it though.

I still have all the original email address' for the bulk order that I initiated back in February; I will contact you all once it does become available and try to make the bulk buy happen although my personal circumstances have changed a bit and I dont have as much time on my hands. Let's see what happens though.

Yep, I got the Short Films disc (along with a CD and a couple of posters) - although it arrived damaged initially so I had to send it back for a replacement. The support at dl.com were superb though: refunding my expenses, ensuring I wouldn't get re-charged by customs (took a whopping hit on my inital order) and keeping me informed all the way. Top people.

It's a really great disc too and absolutely worth picking up. Looking forward to the Eraserhead disc... the delays have been down to the perfectionist approach toward the re-mastering process, so no doubt it'll be worth the wait...

They're not - you can order whether you're a subscriber or not. I'm signed up to the site now, but at the time I placed my order I wasn't... go here --> http://www.davidlynch.com/store/store.html :)

My guess is that a big studio hasn't bothered to lavish the attention this film needs so David Lynch is probably cleaning and restoring it off his own back. Without the economies of scale and negotiating power a large studio would have, the restoration, marketing and distribution costs means the disc is going to be more expensive.

That's my hunch.

Exactly the case. Lynch retains the rights to Eraserhead, and to the earlier of the Short Films, in the US and put these out on his own back... with the associated expenditure that you describe.

As for the shipping costs - very high, sure, but they're using airmail (took about 4 or 5 days after posting was confirmed for my parcels to arrive), and ship the boxed-set size DVD/CD packages in what appears to be a large David Lynch designer shoe-box stuffed full of lavish red tissue paper!

The whole presentation is top notch, and you have to pay for that kind of thing... If I was only casually interested then I might well find it prohibitively expensive, but as a fan I'm very happy that I got fair value for my money. And I'd rather my cash went straight into Lynch's pocket than that of a distributor which doesn't really care about the films.

Eraserhead update

Lynch stopped by the chat room at davidlynch.com with an update on Eraserhead:
DAVIDLYNCH [7:09 PM PST]: GOOD NEWS ON ERASERHEAD .... I THINK WE HAVE SOLVED THE PROBLEMS - IT IS AT LEAST GOING TO BE SPARKLING CLEAN AND I THINK WILL BE GOOD -- IT'S STILL A MONTH OR MORE AWAY BUT BETTER THAN STARTING OVER

Anyone else awaiting this release as much as I am will no doubt be disappointed in the following update, posted last week on LynchNet...

No Eraserhead DVD for a while

Looks like Lynch isn't happy with the way the Eraserhead DVD tests turned out, so they're starting from scratch. From Lynch in the chatroom at davidlynch.com over the weekend:
"ERASERHEAD WILL BE STARTED ALL OVER AGAIN FROM SCATCH THIS WEEK - IT IS THE ONLY WAY. ALL THE PREVIOUS WORK ON ERASERHEAD WILL BE ABANDONED."

:(

dunkrag
11-10-2002, 07:20
That is bad news. Blimey. If this disc ever sees the light of day it had better look like Episode II at this rate!! :D

I'm sure he knows what he's doing and only wants to put out the best product. We will just have to keep waiting I suppose. :(

Maybe it's time for me to bite the bullet and order the short films disc... It's just the postage is so extreme it really puts me off...

Michael Brooke

Given that the original film took five years of painstaking millimetre-by-millimetre perfectionism of an order almost unmatched in film history, I can't say I'm especially surprised!

vorticez
11-10-2002, 10:47
It will be the worth all the waiting I am sure. I don't think Lynch will let this out unless he is 100% happy with it and that makes me happy too.

More news from Dugpa.com (http://www.dugpa.com):

"Seven failed compression attempts, and a completely new HD transfer later, I've got it on good word that the Eraserhead DVD is planned to ship in 2 weeks. Check the online store in the coming days for the announcement. Also of good news is that we may possibly see the Thought Gang CD surface before the end of the year as well."

Excellent news. Although it means my CC is going to take a beating: Eraserhead, The Short Films, Blue Bob and Thought Gang in one go.

EDIT - actually the Blue Bob cd is now unavailable to EU citizens from Lynch's website. It's been released separately in Europe in both box set and normal CD versions. The only place I managed to track it down was at FNAC (http://www.fnac.fr).

Well, I'm glad I didn't hold off until the release of <i>Eraserhead</i> before ordering <i>Blue Bob</i> and the <i>Short Films...</i> disc back in February, as I'd originally considered.

Last week Lynch mentioned on DavidLynch.com that the release of <i>Eraserhead</i> was hopefully only a week or so away, but the latest from last night's chat (quoted from <a href="http://www.dugpa.com">Dugpa</a>) puts an end to that one...

I HAVE VERY BAD NEWS ABOUT ERASERHEAD -- WE HAVE HAD NO LUCK GETTING A GOOD CHECK DISC AND ARE NOW MOVING TO A NEW COMPANY -- ERASERHEAD WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE (?) FOR CHRISTMAS .... THIS IS VERY BAD BECAUSE IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN AND I AM PRETTY SICK ABOUT IT
Ah well, with all this anticipation it's going to be seriously satisfying when it does finally appear, in all its promised unadulterated glory. :D

<b>Edit: </b>On the members chat Lynch also recently mentioned that discussions are underway toward releasing the davidlynch.com online series <i>Rabbits</i> on DVD. As the episodes are only short (2-5 mins a time), I'm keeping my fingers crossed a release might also see the best of of the other web content included, such as the <i>Darkened Room</i> short and, my personal favourite, the fantastically funny <i>Out Yonder</i>.
