My taste in music might have been quite different to his, but he was an incredibly funny writer who always went for the jugular in style.

Very sad. Only 49 too.

He was there during my formative music loving years and when NME was still great.

Christ - I read his stuff avidly in the late 70s/early 80s

Just a bit older than me too. Yesterday I went to the funeral of friend of mine my age who died of a heart attack a week or so ago. It really makes you consider your own mortality.

Quality decline in NME once he left was quite evident.

One of the few music journalists I would trust their opinion on.
