I'm looking to buy some anime OVA/TV series boxsets and was wondering what people recommend (hopefully kanedaa will give his opinion :) ).

Looking at www.animeondvd.com I've come up with a shortlist of the following :

Fushigi Yugi
Tenchi Muyo Ultimate Edition
Cowboy Beebop
Record of Lodoss War (I believe the OVA will be re-issued in the summer so I'll wait for this one)
Heroic Legend of Arslan (got on backorder)
Neon Genesis Evangelion (boxset coming out in April?)

The first three are the ones I'm most interested in at the moment, as they've already been released, although maybe less so with Cowboy Beebop as I believe this is more of a comedy compared to the other two?

What would you recommend? Also, any decent retailers who would have then in stock, for a reasonable price?

Cheers

There is a 25% off link at CDNow floating about in the bargain forum somewhere - always good for the expensive boxsets.

The Tenchi Muyo Ultimate boxset is very good quality and THX mastered :)

Hi Chief Wiggum....

I'll do my best to answer your queries but with anime there is just so much of it (and its so pricey) i'm sure there will be other, more qualified responses to follow (look out for Bedford in particular, and a few others I can't quite recall the usernames of)....

anyways..

Of your top three, i'd highly recommend Cowboy Bebop, mostly as its the only one i've seen in its entirety and thoroughly enjoyed it (more than once too).

What i've seen of Tenchi Muyo suggets its far more of a comedy than Bebop is, and definitely more light hearted (being a romantic comedy and all). Never seen Fushigi Yugi so can't help there.

Lodoss is one of the better D&D style animes i've seen, and the new restored edition is intriguing (i have the older set here). Arislan is another D&D show I always remember enjoying, but don't personally have.

Evangelion - just buy it! Box set is released in April, costly though...not sure i'm going to bother paying out for the box to house my mixture of R1/R4 discs, although i'll probaby end up getting the cheaper option

If you're interested in forthcoming series and don't mind buying a disc a month then Love Hina has just begun its 6month release schedule, and is a great series. The first disc can be bought with a boxset to house the entire series too. I'll also be checking out Sherlock Hound which also starts this month.

Finally, be sure to save your pennies for Excel Saga which is meant to start in the summer sometime...this is anime comedy at its very best (and most outrageous) ;)

As for e-tailers - there aren't any decent ones with decent prices IMO - you're probably best of with the likes of www.dv-depot.com as you'll get your anime customs free, with speedy delivery and the same prices as everywhere else.

Cheers for the replies chaps.

I knew I'd get some decent advice :)

I've ordered Tenchi Muyo, based mainly on price at $88 from DVDImport. Seemed a reasonable price to start at.

I'll be ordering Evangelion, www.planetanime.com have it on pre-order for $110, just have to mess around Emailing copies of CC and Drivers licence, hard when u don't have a scanner :(

I may give dv-depot a try in the future if they're customs free, they are a tad expensive, but at least have stock levels on their site.

I used to buy Manga videos in the early 90's (around it's hey-day here) but never really got into buying seasons of shows, more films.

I've already got the Akira R1 tin and GitS R2, with Jin-Roh SE on pre-order and Wings of Honneamise on back order (from DVDBO tho' :( )

Anyway, thanks again for the advice, very useful.

Spencer

i'm not sure about the Love Hina box and availability - I don't think it is Limited but could be wrong??

I pre-ordered it at Amazon and they dispatched it last week, using a $5 off coupon it worked out at around £22. Ringos have the 1st disc instock but i'm not sure if its with or without the box (most likely without at the price though)..

cheers kanedaa

I got this in my cart now but its $30.72 (with $5 coupon), isn't this about £22?

and whats with the shipping options? Standard International Shipping (averages 11-18 days) or Expedited International Shipping (averages 5-10 business days). Default is on $9.48 which is expedited i think. I guess chances of customs on either method will be the same?

EDIT: GRrrrr... thought you said £25, duh, guess I checkout now

Please be aware, the story is not complete. the box set contains series 1 & 2. The third and final series (No. 3) has just been completed in japan and due to be aired there in April. And should finally conclude who Tenchi picks Most likely Ryoko lord knows when it will be released on DVD and where.

By the way, is the Cowboy Bebop perfect collection box set still available? I heard it was a very limited edition but it shows up on DVDboxoffice for £111. Do i risk it? Is there anywhere cheaper that defiantly have it?

I have to pipe up here (as usual) and mention Sailor Moon...not everyone's cup of tea as it's definately romantic comedy...currently the only part of sailor moon available as a box set is the movies box set, otherwise it's single disk only I'm afraid, unfortunately not starting at the beginning but from the third series :( (sailor moon S) which is a little darker than the others and the disks are named "Sailor Moon Heart Collection" and there are six of them...The Sailor Moon Pegasus Collection is the Sailor Moon Super S Series which follows it

a good bet to see if you like it is to get the movie box set as it's kinda cheap in some places (3 disks) sailor moon r is the best out of the movies imo where as sailor moon Super S just plain sucks as it's aimed at a much younger audience.

Also, I haven't seen it personally but I've heard very good things about Slayers...perhaps someone with more knowledge can fill in the blanks

oh, and as usual, I'm not going to waste an opportunity to post a sailor moon pic :D

Roberto, the one I've ordered is the OVA (the last one DVDImport had:)).
From what I can see there is also a Tenchi Universe Box Set and a Tenchi in Tokyo series. Does the third series you mention follow on from these rather than the OVA?

Also, anyone know anything about Now and Then, Here and There, as there's a box set due in May I think.

No, i was talking about the OVA as well. Episodes 1-6 is series one. Episodes 7-13 are series 2, series 3 has just been completed. TU is also rather good, it's more of re-telling of the story, but at the end Tenchi still doesn't go for Ryoko. Advoid TiT like the plage, done by different (crap) artists and they didn't stay true to the charaters, again Tanchi still doesn't go for Ryoko  The OVA is by far the best, and the third series should wrap up all the lose ends.
