View Full Version : The Official Photo-a-Day for July 2009 - Photo's here!
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/spookygonk/3616861468/" title="Header for the Photo-a-Day 2009 by Spookygonk, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2453/3616861468_06bb79d34d.jpg" width="500" height="400" alt="Header for the Photo-a-Day 2009" /></a>
Welcome one and all. This will be the fifth year the challenge will have run.
The idea is simple, to take and post a single photo-a-day, every day for the whole month of July, no exceptions*. That's 31 posted photos. Don't try and agonise over the small details, try and have some fun again with your camera, whether it's film, digital, point & shoot or DSLR. All are welcome. Try out some stuff you haven't done before, like street photography, shooting from the hip, macro, wildlife, night shots, architecture, flash, infrared, it's all allowed.
*though if you miss a day, don't worry, just carry on the next day. If you have two great photos, choose only one.
Shooting digital will obviously give you an instant result for posting online, whereas with film you have to finish the whole roll, get the film processed, printed or scanned... This could take days or a couple of weeks before you get to put something online, unless you process your own film, then the timescale will be much shorter. Again, don't agonise over post processing, that's not what this event is for. Try and get the composition and exposure right in the camera, this is a learning experience.
It is advisable to be prepared and to map out some idea for photographs in advance as inspiration may not present itself every day, or time / work / family constraints may prevent you from long day's of shooting. Practically everyone has a few days towards the end of the month that were short on ideas. July is a long month, you'll probably realise this by the 21st (or well before!).
To keep a chronological log of photos I have an account with
flickr.com (http://www.flickr.com) (the basic account is free), if you keep the uploaded photos to 800 pixels on the largest side then you'll easily get all 31 photos in with the free account. Create a new set and call it "Photo-a-Day July 2009", "PAD 2009" or "PAD2k9 or something and I'll link it to your name below. Other people use an online blog like www.photoblogs.org (http://www.photoblogs.org) to host their photos with accompanying comments. Otherwise you can set up a free account with photobucket (http://www.photobucket.com) or even just post individual photos here using imageshack (http://imageshack.us)
The first year we had eight people up for the challenge and it's been steadily rising ever since. Each year has produced some stunning photography (and hopefully giving you guys a better insight into your camera gear & photography). So, anyone else up for this... once more? Just sign up below. :D

Boink!'s original post lists these -
street photography
shooting from the hip
macro
wildlife
night shots
architecture
flash
infrared
and here's a few more -
- portrait
- self-portrait
- animal/s
- plant/s
- building/s
- food & drink
- sunrise/sunset
- silhouette
- sports/hobbies
- humour/comical
- unusual angle
- formal still life
+ black & white
+ HDR
+ panorama/stitch
+ animated GIF
+ extreme-ish post-processing (pushing the 'rules')
* experiment with depth-of-field
* experiment with shutter speed (freeze & motion-blur)
More ideas at Wikipedia : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Photography_by_genre - not sure about Erotic though ! :D

Going to try and not do too much processing for this otherwise it's going to take far too long, just a quick exposure tweak on the ground and church for this one.

A garage near work which does up old Minis and the like also seems to like customizing strange bicycles, so there is often an interesting sight or two propped up against their wall.
Here's mine. I had been really inspired when I signed up, but I spent today dreading having to think up something to shoot :(
Anyway, it's my birthday today so I drank Guinness and ate cherry pie (made by my wife and youngest son).

It's going to be a long month... :(
Damnit, I've realised that there's nothing to photograph within 50 miles of my house.
Also, there's something wrong with my camera - when I look through the viewfinder everything looks boring.

I positioned to see the stain-glass window, and for the branch to be visible, then waited for someone to arrive (would've preferred an older guy with a prayer cap, but not to be).
Cropped slightly, levels adjusted, then added texture in PS (never used before, but I really like the effect here).
Exposure Time = 1/250"

Lots of activity at the fish market, but the 50mm is limiting here. Took a few of the bike being loaded, but preferred this shot. Cropped slightly, levels adjusted, B&W in PS and 'popped' with topaz filter.

It's never been the case that the files have to be uploaded on the day - if it were it would practically rule out anyone using film rather than digital, and I'm definitely planning on doing some film stuff this month.

Okay, I'm a couple of days late to this, but I've been taking photos :D
Boink!, if you'd be so kind as to add me to the list. My set is <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/spatho/sets/72157620940865998/">here</a>.
I nearly forgot about doing this, only realising on the 2nd when photos started to appear in my Flickr contacts' stream. Fortunately however, I'd taken one picture on Wednesday following a three hour detour when I got on the train. My commute from Reading back home to Newbury should have taken 20 mins or so, but took me just over three hours due to going via Taunton; not only did I pick the wrong train, I picked one that didn't stop for 80 mins
Anyway, I've been busy the past couple of days and not had a chance to pick up the DSLR, so my first three photos are from my iPhone (with thanks to AndyWilson for showing me the Polarize iPhone app used on the third one):

Was hoping for a better sunset as I had a busy day. Only took 3 shots all day, and disappointingly this was the best. It's HDR, mildly processed to lift out the buildings.

Took lots of photos today, mainly snaps from a trip. Was lucky to see some terns nesting on a harbour wall - fantastic birds, I like them a lot - very graceful, and a joy to watch.
This is not an award-winning photo, but I like the composition and sense of movement - I was on a slow-moving speedboat, and rattled off lots of shots. It's a 100% crop from my 50mm, levels adjusted & de-noised.
Day 5 - I Knew I Was Next

Not really taken many (any ?) sports pics before the PAD, and cricket was a better place to start than my attempts a few days ago at the footie ! (bad, not upped).
Only arrived at the very end, and managed a couple of shots before the celebrations started ! Pic cropped slightly, and levelled.

Thats a cracking shot of those terns Driver8, well caught. After wandering round for the past few days I stayed at home today and messed around with using mirror lock up to try and get some more sharpness in my shots. Quite impressed, much better than simply using the self timer.

Thats a cracking shot of those terns Driver8, well caught. After wandering round for the past few days I stayed at home today and messed around with using mirror lock up to try and get some more sharpness in my shots. Quite impressed, much better than simply using the self timer.
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/58754065@N00/3690961441/" title="Mine Only Goes To Ten by paulsaz, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3661/3690961441_3625f28a44.jpg" width="446" height="500" alt="Mine Only Goes To Ten" /></a>
That's impressive, I tried to do something similar but failed miserably. Can I ask how you achieved this?
A big sheet of white polysterene type wrap pinched from work on the bed, £10 maplin light tent round the top of the neck, dvd boxset under bridge to lift that end up a bit. Light from window about 6ft to the left.
Stuck the camera on the tripod and composed. (f2.8 for DoF) manually selcted the focus point over the third volume knob enable custom function no 12 on the 30d (enable mirror lock up) and pressed the shutter slooowly. With the 30d when you enable mirror lock up it raises the mirror and then uses a 2 second self timer before taking the shot.
In photoshop I cropped it slightly and used the spot heal brush to remove some very prominent dust on the body. I then added a layer with an 81 warming filter. I then added a black to white gradient adjustment layer (makes it black and white) and then clicked on the gradient bar to add a colour stop which I selected a warm brown for to match with the body of the guitar. I think I may have dropped the opacity of this layer down to about 60% but not sure now looking at it.

So its a mixture of technology and technique, alas I think my pokey old D40 will be found wanting :(
all my good stuff is thanks to PS :)
The mirror on the 30d seems very strong to me and it's a bugbear of mine that I really struggle for sharpness on shots slower than 1/125 even when on a tripod. the mirror seems to go off like a jack in the box and shakes the camera.

that's really nice, great portrait.
Inspired by Common's angles and stairwell's I tried something in that style today. Even did a cheat hdr by using the adjustment brush in lightroom to add some exposure to the shadows. No where near his standard of course but it is fun seeing what angles you can make.

Bit of a catch up for me, as I have been working my way through a roll of HP5 in a Yashica rangefinder that I was hoping to use for some of the days. But it turned out that I quite like a couple of my digital backups - in fact I am happier with the two digital backup shots for film days (3rd and 5th) than I was with the two I took on digital only days.
Still got half a roll to go, so hopefully have a nice lunchtime tomorrow to wander around town and finish the film off to get it developed.

I'm really not getting into this this year...
Know the feeling… There's still plenty of time left to improve (though you've had some much better results than I have - love the jumping shot(s)).
Thats a nice retro GT ya got there, splatter paint for the win!
Had her since new - and I realised on the ride home that she still has the original brake cables! Twenty something years and still going strong...until the rear one snapped! Didn't come off, which is just as well since I had my DSLR on my back!
That splatter paint's remarkable by the way - I think there's a total of two chips in it (and she's been ridden a lot - was my only bike for many years). The chips were covered with the little bottle of touch-up paint that came with the bike - I still have it too.
Was at a funeral today, so rather than posting the fairly morbid pictures of the wreathes, I got a hamster out when I got home!
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/dvf-woz/3698738983/" title="Day 7: Smudge by Woz!, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2669/3698738983_925dab5b61.jpg" width="500" height="500" alt="Day 7: Smudge" /></a>
Edit: You've no idea how hard it is to photograph these little blighters! And the longer you have them out of the cage, the more excited and therefore fast they become!

Another rush job on the way home from work. Very disappointed, but I took a colour and B&W shot of this, expecting the colour to work better with the contrast between the night sky and the intensity of the neon, but good old faithful mono just seemed to work better!

There's this guy I hardly speak to at work who randomly brought this Agfa Isolette in for me today, gratis. I was, of course, extremely grateful, and both the camera and its lovely tan leather case seem to be in brilliant condition. Just need to see if it works now...
The Isolette, if working, is a great little square format camera.
EDIT Went to work early so I could stop off at a ladie's fashion shop for some model* photos. Hope to do the 8th (ooh, today) on my way home so I can spend the day asleep and not be constrained by the weather.

I had something similar shot with my bedroom light, but decided to go out with my Sigma 30mm f/1.4 instead.
Well done for keeping in with the month. Only 23 days to go. :D

I really wish I had a UWA lens today, although I'm not even sure a 10mm would have been able to accurately capture the vast expanse of grassland I crossed (some 800 plus miles).

Well I decided to go to the East Midlands Airport Aeropark today, only to find it was not open today!! Managed to take this through the fence. The sky was white, as it was overcast, so I have added a sepia filter to it, to add some interest.

day 09 already ?? hey, rlengthorn - slow down ... still playing catchup ... ! I'm enjoying everyone's posts & photos - has anyone dropped out yet ?
As an aside, I am titling my photos with the name of a music track (that I already must have on my HD), so if anyone is inclined they can play guess the artist (don't bother posting answers, I'll make a list at the end for each day.) I mention this 'cos I struggled bit with these !
Day 06 - Why Not Smile
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/photomaldives/3701551531/" title="Why Not Smile by Photo Maldives, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3476/3701551531_9170e80730.jpg" width="342" height="500" alt="Why Not Smile" /></a>
Tailor making army uniforms - I spotted this guy through the window, but when I asked if I could photo him he decided to pose. My idea was that he looks more of military-type than tailor, but due to my restricted angle I couldn't get the composition I wanted in a quick snap (note the camouflage cloth, barely noticeable !)
Day 07 - Gotta Serve Somebody
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/photomaldives/3702363200/" title="Gotta Serve Somebody by Photo Maldives, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2491/3702363200_159a9de3b2.jpg" width="342" height="500" alt="Gotta Serve Somebody" /></a>
Well, taking photos of this was part of my PAD plan, to practise some high speed shots. What I didn't count on was taking 330 shots in 30mins, and the hours it took to go through them !
A group of women get together regularly, round the corner, to play Bashi - a traditional game, played with tennis racket & ball. I really like the expressions in this, and the focal-point & DOF work well imo.
Day 08 - White Shadows
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/photomaldives/3701559317/" title="White Shadows by Photo Maldives, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3638/3701559317_b109a27562.jpg" width="500" height="382" alt="White Shadows" /></a>
Well, this was one of my emergency ideas - it's been raining for most of today (98mm in 24hrs, apparently). It's a piece of coral I found on the beach of an uninhabited island (pieces like this are surprisingly rare !) I took about 20 shots, with different lighting & DOF - all of them looked uninspired when off-camera, but I'm pleased that converting to mono and sharpening/enhancing in PS has brought out the details (and finally, one of my pics looks good in the standard frame I's decided on !)

driver8 - like the song title idea... may pinch that myself for a few photos if you don't mind!
Bad dose of CBA today so went for the easy product shot myself. Really miss this old girl, years in the wardrobe and she fired straight up. And back in the old days we had eye controlled autofocus points, I really miss that. So much for making progress.
Seems a real waste to leave her sat in the wardrobe gathering dust again, any film lovers want to give her a home? I'll even throw in the lens and flash (assuming it still fires).

sure queeg500 - no problem !
If you use a desktop search app (such as Copernic) or a music database (such as Mediamonkey) it's easy to search for title keywords (so long as you can think of any relevant ones for your photo !)

That works very well. Grabbed a few low light shots again on the way to work (slept for 10 hours as was feeling sick all day), only to find half way through the camera was in MF mode so the focus was off, so with the minutes ticking away I reshot some, only to find then when chimping in the middle of a road the lens was in MF so what I'd taken was still OOF. So I took a couple a third time.
Tommorrow, I'll shoot something in the daytime..
That's a gorgeous marble, Woz.
