This one's slipped under the radar, haven't seen any adverts for it which is surprising.
I was a Massive L.O.G fan so will definitely give it a look - cheers!

Starts this Thursday. Good interview with Pemberton and Shearsmith in, I think, today's Guardian.

Got slipped a review copy of this through work (1st episode), it's a nice idea but the execution is awful, it's just the LOG in a different setting. I loved LOG but it became very unfunny very quickly, this continues the trend.
very poor.

I never watched LOG as it annoyed the hell out of me when i was younger. This though i quite enjoyed. Quite creepy but made me laugh a fair few times. Will stick with it.
Maybe i'll have a new appreciation for LOG!

You should revisit it, got to be the best British show of the last 15 years.
No Mark Gatis, though

Gatiss is writing for the new Dr Who series, and also doing another book. They've said he might pop up later on in the series though.
I thought it was excellent - how creepy was the blind guy !!!!!

Loved it and watched the 2nd episode straight after.
Yup, very good indeed. Sort of new it would have potential after the opening credits.
'cashier number 3 please'
'ooh, he's left his candle on'
Thought it was all a bit predictable, the mother and son are just a rebadged Tubbs and Edward.
The first two series of LOG were utter genius, this feels like reheated leftovers.

I thought this was great. Not as good as the first two LOG series, but much better than the third and the movie. Even slightly below par League is better than 99% of the junk that gets served up as comedy on tv today (take the "comedy" that was on an hour before it for example, I bet Psychoville had a quarter of the budget and was infinietly better).
Fell asleep watching it but will try and catch, liked the clown smoking up the kids party as he sprayed his limb with wd40
I really liked it but the LOG comparissons are inevitable. Think it works great on it's own, but it could have been some really great foundation work for LOG series 4 with the introduction of new characters and a new plot!!!!! Wonder if Shearsmith and Pemberton pitched that idea to the other two?

I think for a first episode it was quite good. Of course there were high expectations from the LOG guys. But it has a lot of hype from the 3 series of LOG to live up too. I expect good things from this though. So fingers crossed. ;)

Really enjoyed this. I didn't have very high hopes for it after LOG S3 but this had a few good laughs in it and was suitably creepy.
A return to form.
I thought this was fantastic, I love the mix or horror and humour from these guys. I can't wait for the next episode :D
Is anyone else playing the game?

Massive LOG fan here and I loved this also. Yes, it was just 'LOG lite' but why is that such a bad thing?
Favourite moment for me had to be David the Butler running into the dining room and mumbling his line.....very Pam Doove!

Thought this was good as well. Not sure about the Dawn French character though.
I never got on with LOG, although I wanted to. Loved the atmosphere, just didn't get on with the humour.
This was different though, and it clicked for me straight away. Will be tuning in next time - if I remember. I'm crap with keeping up with TV shows.
Really enjoyed this and i am looking forward to watching the characters develop. Blind Guy is Very Very Creepy
thank god no canned or audience laughter

20-06-2009, 15:05
Blind Guy's voice sounded too much like one of their other characters. I enjoyed it but it was very reminiscent of the beginning of LoG (by the way the third is the strongest season in my book, its the only one that made me laugh regularly), first of all a twist on the narrative set up (a voice over in the original) then a clsoe up on a car, Babs cab in original, the hearse in this, also writing on a hearse in both (flowers spelling ******* in original) followed by a papa lazarus like clown, yep, but still its good to have them back, or at least half of them.

I quite liked it. Not too bothered about Mark Gatiss not being in it, though I did like him.
Not quite as good as LOG though, I agree

Liked this a lot. very little dark humour on tv lately so this is very welcome. the premise is an instant hook, what's the secret, how do the connect to one another.
don't get why people are complaining about it being like LOG, surely that's their style. why would they change it. it's like saying "yeah, i like monty python, but the holy grail seemed a little pythonesque. especially that john cleese he came across as very cleese-y"
That was not Eastbourne either

Why is it that both weeks, so far, I have found myself asking where I know the woman playing Snow White from ... realising (at the end of the episode) it's Man Stroke Woman only to forget by next week
Also  at Freddie, Dawn French's 'baby', getting a "Himself" in the credits.

Just noticed that Sonia, from Eastenders, is in the cast list according to IMDB. Haven't spotted her yet but I suppose she could be one of the eBay women.
I'm loving this series! Mr Jelly is my favourite character
He is like Jeff/Geoff from LOG - all bitter and twisted. That's a good thing.
Snow White was also in Green Wing a bit.
Natalie Cassidy is down to play Lorraine aka Miss Tipsey
Sounds like the mystery ties back to a hospital or facility, with the dwarf and serial killer fan being patients. Maybe Dawn French as a nurse there?
The seafront shot is not Eastbourne.
It's Weston-super-Mare
This was decent - as I was a huge LOG fan (except the film). But it does just seem like a new set of LOG characters, without being as good as seasons 1 or 2.

I hope a 'whoooooooosh' applies here but I may be wrong
Episode 3 down, and it really is a top show, eh tea leaf?
A friend has lent my his League Of Gentlemen boxset, as I figured I'd give it another go. I'm halfway through S2 (watched one & a half all through yesterday) and while I'm quite enjoying it, I much prefer Psychoville for these reasons:
-intriguing 'mystery' storyline
-characters far more fleshed out, rather than just grotesqueries.
-better production values
-no canned laughter (HUGE plus)
-varied cast
-it's funnier, with well written jokes rather than just 'gross out' humour.
It's more grounded than LOG, while still being compellingly oddball. The writer's have found just the right balance between the two IMO.

The sequence where we learn how Mr Jelly lost his hand and how his bitter rivalry with Mr Jolly started was utter bloody genius! :D

I loved the chase through the kids jungle-gym (or whatever those things are called) and the idea of drowning someone in a plastic pools was great.
Much more enjoyable than LoG but still provides enough "ughhh gross" moments.
I love that bit where Mr Jelly gets the mysterious video tape and says 'I can't play it, I've only got DVD. I've not had tape since Shawshank Redemption'.
That had me chuckling for ages..
best thing on tv by a huge margin at the moment :)

Caught this by accident last night after Mitchell & Webb and thought it was absolutely gripping, had loads of things I needed to get up and do but just couldn't leave the TV. So funny but not actually funny at all. As said the bit explaining how the doctor learnt all the tricks was brilliant, and the subsequent chase, stopping at things like the "remove shoes" sign .
Will be making a point of watching the earlier eps on iplayer to catch up! I never "got" the League of Gentlemen, maybe I should rewatch.
Oh and Dawn French covering the doll's face in food and then getting excited when the bowl fell on the floor :notworthy

Some brilliant wallpapers on the offical site http://www.bbc.co.uk/psychoville/galleries/wallpapers.shtml Mr Jelly has to be my favourite closely followed by Joy Aston (Dawn French)
The opening court room scene was very good, too.
Have a feeling Mr Jelly is going to remain a key part of the proceedings despite the typo (or caligrapho) McGuffin.

Just caught up on iPlayer. Really enjoyed it. Getting stronger with each episode which is always a good sign. Seems they have a nicely laid out story arc and the production values are great.
I only recorded this because it was on BBC HD but I'm glad I did, it's very wacky and I would say on a par with LOG so far which can never be a bad thing. My only criticism is of Reece and Steve though, as no matter how they are made up their voice talents are a bit limited.
Right, doesnt matter if you live in London or Wales, you still sounds like your from Lancashire.

There's a video of them on the BBC website now where they say they were asked to extend the series to seven episodes without spending very much money and last night was the result, they consider it a sort of "DVD extra" to the main story, so maybe I can forgive it being below the standard of the other eps.

thought there were three takes in all?
I spotted two joins while watching, one obvious one about two thirds of the way through, and one where the mum went into the kitchen and the camera follwed. As the swing doors went closed i think it cut then too

Thought last night's was very good though the OH, who has surprised me by loving it so far, thought it was meh
Also confused about the "one take" bit. If they meant they did it all at the first attempt then that is :notworthy If they meant it was one single tracking shot then I also didn't see anywhere where it was cut ... the places where others have said were definite cuts (lid of the chest and the swing door - where the mum goes out and comes back in almost straight away) could easily still be the same shot.
If they claimed it was a single tracking shot then fair enough, but a single take refers to the performance not the edits between cameras
Actually it doesn't AFAIK. It usually refers to everything being filmed on one camera in one attempt - no edits, no different angles, etc
KennyVader
11-07-2009, 00:26
They didn't do it in one attempt, in the video on the official BBC site he mentions how something would go wrong and they'd have to start all over again several times.
AdamBrunt
11-07-2009, 09:02
Indeed, if they had done it all at the first attempt then that would have been even more :notworthy
However, it does show they did do it in ONE take - else they wouldn't have had to go back to the beginning when they made a mistake, rather they would have just gone back to the last cut.

The only thing I don't understand with the recent episode was the baby stuff. Was it her Husband and the Nurse the whole time? Obviously she thinks the baby is coming to life but I was a little confused on that front as obviously she would've seen the Nurse 'controlling' the baby.

My take on it (which I would say was reinforced by tonight's episode) was that it was Joy's deluding herself about the doll most of the time but then the husband and the nurse took advantage of her delusions to scare her into falling down the stairs etc by using the doll as a puppet.
Excellent episode again tonight, not so much of the funny this week (apart from some terrific lines like Sonia out of Eastenders mentioning having big sausages in her face and thus being typecast :D) but superbly dark, a build up to a spectacular grand finale next week!

Agree with all of that.
Other questions based on tonight's episode:
1) What was the line about "3 years in .... training finally paid off" ?
2) Where did David get the blue bag (and it's contents ?) from ?
3) Was it only my Sky+ box where the red button did let me watch the final episode ?
UPDATE: Answer to question (3) ... according to a thread over at DigitalSpy, no I am not the only one. They are trying to working out if it was deliberate or a technical cock up from the BBC.

1) "Three years of fight training at Webber Douglas finally paid off" ... Webber D was a well known (in acting circles anyway!) drama school in South Kensington, although it got taken over by another school a few years ago.
2) I presume we're meant to think that David is the mysterious man in black, although I don't think he is, I think it'll turn out to be a different blue bag or the man in black will have met him and given it to him.

I would love it if there was another series but surely there can only be two returning main characters - David and Robert? Although given what they threw a us for the series finale, who knows what this show can and can't do!

I don't think we were really meant to know what was going on! I took it as a clever sleight of hand as you just assumed that they were going to the mental hospital. Let's just hope we have series two to explain it otherwise it will just have to be left as a very weird conclusion
Well it's, possibly, been rather awkwardly left that the locket is now of significance, so maybe that will be the plot device of S2.
EDIT: Maybe the locket is like Gollum's ring or something.

Genius - worth the licence fee on its own
Excellent end to the series, couldn't shake the feeling that this episode was missing about 15 minutes or so. Some elements of the plot were a little thin and the end was a little too abrupt, a better lead into (the hopefully inevitable) series two would have been nice as well.
Still, well done to 50% of LoG.

Loved it. A second series would be ace, but if it doesn't happen I quite like that as an ending -- the "You killed her" plot has been wrapped up, so the dwarf/locket business can be left as a bizarre tease.
Apart from Mr Jelly's toilet escapades and David's CAB meeting, Lomax had the best laughs again: the always-funny Club phone and the ketchup, the line "Who's this clown?" and his congratulating David on getting the colours right, oblivious to what had happened. And of course "He was always the weakest link goodbye".

Reece Shearsmith was on Jonathan Ross Radio 2 show a few weeks ago and he said that the rope episode and the way it was filmed was going to be an extra on the DVD.

31-10-2010, 23:52
Enjoyed the Halloween special a lot. Really funny, really creepy.
I also liked it a lot. I liked the way it tied in with the end of series one - didn't see that coming. Sets the scene for series 2 nicely.
If I've got one complaint, it's the serial killer mother turning into a warewolf - where are they going to go with that story? And why didn't she ever turn during series one?
But overall, I really enjoyed it and thought it was greatly made. It really did put some of these Hollywood films to shame. This was a lot more atmospheric.

I think it was probably approached like the LOG Xmas special in that not every detail will inform the next series (i.e. Mr <s>Jolly</s> Jelly will be back and so will mummy). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7h9ORm07JY

It happened in a dream that David was recounting to the kid. It wasn't real. Same with the Mr Jelly storyline.

I think it's as good as it's ever been, but then again I also loved the first episode of the new series and didn't find it tired at all. It's only two in (third tonight), so it's too early to judge as a whole though.
I must admit, whilst I'm enjoying it, and looking forward to viewing this each week I feel disappointed.
To be honest, with the amount of characters they have to work with, 30mins feels very rushed, with just a snippet of them. I'm sure there is plenty of scope there for a hour length show.
I may well be wrong, but it almost feels like they didn't want to do a 2nd series, and are just using this as a reason to kill the characters off.
There is no real story like there was in the 1st series.
It's a shame as it feels, to me anyway, there is a lot of potential in all of the characters with new storylines, but as I say, it just feels like they are running through this series, to get rid off the show.

It may be as Tempest says, but for me something is missing compared to the 1st series and the Xmas special. They seem to be running through the motions. Determined Librarian/Silent Singer is excellent though.
I don't think it's up to the standard of the first series but still look forward to it each week.
I too felt a little uncomfortable about Lomax being revealed as Tony Hancock - and then no sooner than it happened, he was dead. Didn't seem to be much point to it.
The irony is I don't find all the locket business that interesting, whereas the determined librarian story strand has been very entertaining.

I haven't been enjoying series 2 very much. Just not as funny as series 1 and the killing off of the cast is getting tiresome. On the plus side Jason Watkins is excellent.
