The IMDB lists the original aspect ratio for Room At the Top as 1.66:1, but it also says the film format was 35mm. Is the ratio mentioned correct, and if so, does this mean it was shot open matte and then cropped to 1.66:1? Because the R2 DVD is described on the box and online as 4:3...
UPDATE: I've just looked at the disc, and the opening few minutes are in what looks like approx 1.45:1 (!!) and the rest is a firm 4:3. And it certainly doesn't look like there'd be any room for cropping.
You might think that the opening different ratio was included for the benefit of the credits, but if that's the case they'd better think again: there are several nasty examples of credits being chopped off on the left margin, several letters in...even the title slide looks a little shaved!
And there are no subtitles and the sound is hissy as all get-out and...oh well, another super-budget disc that wasn't all that budget at all really. Disappointing.
Any news of a better version anywhere, anytime?
Sigh...
