Following on from the POTW 10 thread, the idea was to move to a Monthly competition. Not sure exactly how we should play this but perhaps 3 weeks for entries and 1 week voting? And what if we allow 2 entries per username?
What are other peoples thoughts? I'm fine with hosting for June, just need a majority decision.

Sounds good to me having 3 weeks then 1 to vote :) never thought about the vote bit before so that makes some sense.

Try it and see how it goes. I'd stick to 1 entry per person though personally
I don't mind 2 per month.
(not that I ever have time to enter :D )

I agree with this.
There was talk of maybe having a theme?

I think themes are an excellent idea - they're challenging and inspirational. I also think that POTM would work a lot better than POTW. I might even have a dabble, if there's going to be a bit of a re-jig.

I vaguely recall a themed competition was discussed a while back - may even have been tried?

Well July is Photo A Day, so that might kick up interest in people taking photos enough for us to continue having a weekly one.

It isn't weekly anyway, it is fortnightly. The competition, as it stands, is pointless
We used to do a monthly themed photo comp and it died on its **** like the weekly one has after a while. The issue was people didn't have the time to take a specific photo to enter the comp with so we got less and less entries. I'd prefer a monthly one with no theme as I know I don't get that much time to pick up the camera these days and I won't often be in the position to take something specific.

We could compromise. Along side the Perpetual Photography thread, we could run a themed challenge and POTM thread  . People may then talk about diluting the whole idea, but, if people continue to contribute, even in fractured, smaller numbers, I'm not sure what harm it would do. After all, we don't actually get anything from these competitions, do we? And, by simply having one of each, everyone would be happy (apart from those who don't like actually being happy, of course  )
Overall if it get's people using their cameras to take better photos, what harm is there in it.

I quite liked the theme ones and is gave me something to shoot for.
POTM would be good as well as it seems any resonable photos I take are when Im away then I don't get time straightaway to download and check for a few days by which time the wednesday deadline has passed.
Im going to try PAD2009 I usually get to day 15 and run out of Ideas! espeacially with the past 2 years rubbish weather!

A monthly competition sounds good, more chance I (and I'm sure others) would have something to enter. ( I think I only managed 2 POTW this year)
How about the entry window being 4 weeks - the last week of the previous month and the first three weeks of the competition month, with the last week of the competition month as a voting week?
Themed competition sounds like something worth trying too and agree it could be better run alongside a POTM competition.
Just another idea so open to criticism.
Why not just have a monthly photography thread, in place/alongside the PPT, which gets locked at the end of the month, then another thread for a week to vote on any photo's in there (say by post number).
Could even setup a flickr group each month to accomadate it...
Only thing is I guess it's no longer anonymous by any means, but I think we all vote on the merits of the photo's anyway...

Thankfully, its a forum at the end of the day, and if someone wants to give something a punt, whether it be POTM or themed challenges (which personally I like the sound of), then no one is stopping them from creating a thread. People will vote with their "feet" :suspect: and if the proposition is robust enough, it will take off (not literally you understand - its not a 'plane!), if it isn't, it'll be a dead duck. Nobody is forcing anyone to do anything.

I'm back in business now so happy to take my hosting responsibilities if people want a POTW 11

Yeah I remember the themed ones went dead as a dodo, most people never bothered and its just to much hasstle for most people to do something to a theme.

Ohh its worth a try :) but some other forums are massive compared to us on here haha we can barley get 5 entries every 2 weeks :D for any photo comps.

I'm kinda looking forward to PAD, as I've learnt a few new tricks since last year's. However, the thought of having to take a (good) photo everyday scares the heck outta me...
Doesn't have to be good photo at all. Try new techniques out etc - personally i'm going to give the following ideas a try:-
tilt-shift
hdr
photoshopping for that antique look
one of those globe picture things
You've also typically got a dslr, compact and mobile phone camera to play about with so should be ok.

I know it doesn't have to be a 'good' photo, but I always feel so lame uploading something I don't feel halfway pleased with - add into that the fact that we tend to be our own worst critics...
I will be carrying my p&s with me at all times this year, methinks.

hdr
HDR Should be banned from the entire forum I say :gag:

Not if done with a degree of intelligence and sensitivity, it shouldn't. I'll be the first to admit that I've made some complete howlers with HDR (I think my last couple in the Perpetual Photography Thread border on this!), but equally, I've produced HDR images that you wouldn't really be able to distinguish from a regular single exposure shot...
Rant over...

Yup you dont rock the boat all the time thats ofr sure, but I would say 95% of people do not show restraint :D some people do it as far as they can go with every picture, very odd as many adore it when they are so far over the edge they are then artwork, bad art :D
Some good examples of HDR here http://www.petecarr.net/
Trouble is I get bored looking at his site after a while, as it's all HDR.

Mind you 2 and 6 work well, the street work seems not like HDR, its just like he ajusted the contrast a load, I would have never guess it was HDR.
HDR always reminds me of those pictures you get in markets that have been printed on silver foil *shudders*

maybe a good challenge would be to post an HDR shot that no-one realises is HDR? It can certainly be done, just avoid photomatix like the plague!
