View Full Version : HTC Diamond 2 or Touch Pro 2 - Opinions wanted
Afternoon all,
I'm approaching upgrade time and my current phone, HTC Tytn II (XDA Stellar) is beginning to feel a bit bulky, i'm wanting to keep the Windows Mobile functionality as i do use it for work and have several purchased programs that are WinMo only.
I've been eyeing up the Diamond 2 as a potential replacement but have reservations over the touchscreen only element. As a test i decided to try to use the tytn by touch only for a few days and it generally went well although on a couple of occasions i slid the keyboard out instinctively. Has anyone made the switch from a similar device with a qwerty keyboard to touchscreen with success?
The other option is the Touch Pro 2 as the natural successor to the tynt II with it's keyboard but on paper it's even bigger than my current phone but a tad more ergonomic.
Thanks in advance, fabbers

Have you thought about a Sony Ericsson Xperia X1? These are made by HTC on with a SE design. I think the default interface is essentially WM6.1.
I have installed custom firmware on mine which adds the latest HTC style interface (I use touchit 7.1)
Its about the same hight and width of a standard phone, but has a bit more depth due to the slide out keyboard?
Although the screen is quite small, it has a good resolution 800x480, so usability depends on how good your eye sight is.
After using a SE C902, the downside to the phone is the poorish camera.
more details.

Yeah a friend has the X1 at work, not really keen, couldn't put my finger on it. Just felt a bit plasticky. Plus i heard things about the stock ROM and buggyness. Although point taken about playing with the firmwares.
What network you on? I believe that O2 and Orange have 6 month exclusivity on the Diamond 2.
i'm on O2 but there are some deals around at the moment with an OEM handset on t-mobile that i'm considering. but if i can get one on upgrade at O2 that could be a good deal. any idea on timescales

I made the move from the tytn II to the Touch HD. I don't really mind texting or writing e-mails using the touch screen. But lets face it, it is much better when using the keyboard. My brother doesn't seem to think so though. He loves using the touch screen on his Diamond.
I find I make a few mistakes when using the touch screen for typing. But that could be because I've using the T9 feature.
Overall though it's worththe sacrifice. The Tytn II touch screen wasn't that great anyway. But apart from that the interface is nice and it works well.
hmmm definately swaying toward the diamond then as i want something more pocketable. i'll have a word with o2 tomorrow. thanks for the replies so far. any more appreciated.
Just to add that a lot people at my work have switched from a keyboad phone like the touch pro to the touch diamond based on ease of use and the nice smaller size.
what is the main diff between the Touch HD/Touch Pro2/Diamond 2?
Struggling to find comparative reviews

Not sure I have this right but I think the main one is the size of the screen. I believe that the Diamond2 is pretty much the same size as the Diamond apart from the screen maybe a bit larger.
The Touch HD has a larger screen. Having used my brothers Diamond I definetly find it easier to use the touch screen on the HD as it's larger and easier to use with your finger. Less room for mistakes to be made if that makes sense.

Just checked out the HTC site and here are the screen sizes.
Diamond 2 - 3.2-inch
Touch Pro 2. - 3.6inch
Touch HD - 3.8-inch
had both the touch diamond and x1 at work and found the x1 to be far superior in almost every way!
I like my Diamond, but miss the keyboard off the Vario that I had and wish I had waited for the Vario 4. I looked at the X1 but thought it felt a bit cheap and flimsy.
I have a couple of months left until my upgrade but am sorely tempted to bite the bullet and go for the TP2 now
I looked at the X1 but thought it felt a bit cheap and flimsy.
imho it was a hell of lot less cheap and flimsy than the diamond with it's awful plastic backing. I've used both in anger, but if you don't want to listen to somebody has used both then hey, go for your life :p

;) But seriously this thread hasn't helped, i'm more indecisive than ever. Might have to hold on a while as if anything i'm swaying back towards the touch Pro 2. Might have to see if i can find a CPW with them in.

I should clarify that I actually have the Tmobile version that has the plain flat cheap plastic backing rather than the diamond facetted cheap plastic backing of the HTC version :)
I should also clarify that the bit that I considered "cheap and flimsy" was the slide mechanism which did not seem to be as robust as my Vario. But I freely admit that I only used it for a couple of minutes with joy in my heart and not in anger
But back on topic I read on the xda-developers site that cpw should have them in by the end of the week. I am hanging back until I can hold one in my hand to judge whether I can put up with the extra size. There seem to be a lot of people on there that have the TP2 and it seems to be causing some lively discussions (with and without handbags :) )

In my opinion would still prefer my touch hd to the pro2, as the camera is better @ 5mp and screen is bigger. The different on screen keyboards are really easy to use and I have found that the slide out keyboards on these phones make them way too big and bulky to use as an everyday phone (unless you keep it in your handbag;)). I have had the Touch Hd now for a couple weeks and it is the best phone I have ever had! Touch flo works really well and is easy to get used to. Highly recommended:thumbs: Got mine free on Tmobile on a £35 a month tariff that includes free data usage, ideal for this phone for the internet, email and google maps etc. Runs tom tom great too. Hope this helps you decide
check you tube there are some reviews that show the keyboards in action, you can see how easy to use they are.
Evening all, just to update, ditched O2 and going with the Touch Diamond 2 on T-mobile.Should be here tomorrow so i'll give my opinions in a few days.

I had the same problem which one to go for but went for the touch pro 2 in the end as its has a larger screen and the key board that slides out great for texts and e-mails rather than trying to type on the screen, a great phone lots can be done with it in the way of apps and changing the back grounds.
My choice would be the touch pro 2 but thats me
