What, what what????
While explosively stripping the evil pirate LeChuck of his demonic mojo, Guybrush Threepwood inadvertently infects the entire Caribbean with the arch-fiend's expelled voodoo, which threatens to transform buccaneers into unruly pirate monsters. Pursued by a notorious cut-throat Pirate Hunter and a creepy French Physician who believes that Guybrush's eerily-infected hand holds the secret of eternal life, Threepwood sails the seven seas in search of La Esponja Grande, a legendary sea sponge with unparalleled voodoo exfoliating abilities. But little does Guybrush know, his quest is part of a larger, more sinister plot, and good and evil are not always as they seem…
Who can Guybrush trust? Where can he turn? Everything you think you know will be challenged as Tales of Monkey Island builds to its unexpected finale!
Chapter 1
Launch of the Screaming Narwhal
Chapter 2
The Siege of Spinner Cay
Chapter 3
Lair of the Leviathan
Chapter 4
The Trial and Execution of Guybrush Threepwood
Chapter 5
Rise of the Pirate God
Not too keen on the design of Guybrush, looks like a scaghead.
Ron Gilbert? Dave Grossman? Michael Land? Dominic Armato?
Yep, a lot of classic names are involved! Telltale's design team is led by Dave Grossman, one of the original three guys who wrote and designed Monkey Island 1 and 2, so of course he's here! Ron Gilbert has also dropped by for some design and story brainstorming, consulting, etc. Check out all this and more on the team page. (http://www.telltalegames.com/monkeyisland/team)

I like Telltale's spirit but I find their games just don't "click" for me. I've only played 3 of the Sam + Max episodes but they're not as enjoyable as some of the adventure games of old. I don't know whether that's just because I've changed or if there's a certain something missing from the writing.

I agree with that. I got half way through that Mecha-Lincoln episode (4 was it?) and it just wasn't doing anything for me. Had loads of backtracking, the writing and gameplay wasn't working for me. Bosco was the only remotely interesting character.
Preordered!
(although still need to get through Sam n Max really... I think the Monkey brand will see me complete these episodes every month though).
degeneration, please edit the title, it's coming out on WiiWare too!
I'm hoping Lucasarts gets the hint and starts making point and clicks again.

What's it supposed to use for control? A "Grim Fandango" system where you try and use the cursors to turn and walk around in random directions with things appearing when you look at them?

Previous Telltale games have all been point-&-click with the mouse.

I didn't buy it. I was waiting to see if they were better than Sam & Max and Wallace & Gromit first. Will give the demo a go a bit later.

Are these on Steam yet or do you have to use something rubbish like Gametap?
Have little inclination to play them for some reason. Probably because I've only got a lappy these days (bought all the S&Ms and only bothered to play two of them).

First episode went up on Steam this morning. Sam & Max was brilliant, especially the last few episodes of season 1.

Yeah I liked what I played I just can't stand gaming on my laptop. I'll play them through properly when I get a big boy's PC again (hopefully later in the year).

Will wait for reviews for purchasing. Have covered it in the Wallace + Gromit XBLA posts but I'm rather disappointed by Telltale Games' output on these adventures, but admire their enthusiasm.
Any ideas of cost and release date on wii?

I wish the control scheme on the PC version was classic point and click rather than this weird click and drag movement. It's really off-putting. Haven't played enough to pass judgment on the game itself.
Really enjoying this. Controls are the worst aspect of it but they're not nearly as bad as they sound in reviews. I get by using WASD keys to move Guybrush and from then on it's just point and click to do the rest.
It doesn't seem to be widely documented by pressing F4 will focus the screen on clickable objects, so no pixel hunting required.
The art style and environments are all top notch, as is the pacing (I'm near the end of the episode). You don't get swamped with locations, and yet you get given just enough freedom to not feel completely boxed in and lead down a completely linear path (which you ultimately are). One slight down point is some of the fringe characters don't really have a strong unique design - some of the models and facial features seem borrowed. The principle cast of characters are all great however.
Script and voice acting is faultless; it feels like a Monkey game. I've played all the previous games multiple times (apart from 4) and this is a seamless continuation to the series.
Graphics are pretty impressive - the camera works well, and the depth of field effects are a very cool touch. The only issue is that I first installed the game on my laptop (which isn't hugely powerful but should handle this with ease) and it was amazingly slow. Wasn't expecting such a performance hog in a graphic adventure!
The puzzles are fine, nothing that has caused me to pull my hair out. Some people will find them too easy I suspect. They are quite memorable and well designed though.
It has a demo so I'd recommend giving it a try if you are interested - you'll know quite early on if it's something you will like.

It's getting very good reviews.
It has a horrible interface, even using wasd, and the demo was too short. It was just long enough to make me hate the control system and no longer to allow me to get the hang of it and get into it at all. Put me off buying - will await the SE of the first game. :)
I'm used to the controls now. I didn't like using the mouse at first but now I think it's fine. The revelation came after realising that I hardly need to move the mouse to make Guybrush change direction using click-and-drag.
Other handy things: the right mouse button makes him run once you're walking, and a middle click toggles the inventory.

I decided to buy it today and I'm not regretting it. The opening sequence was great fun, I've laughed several times already and I actually like the mouse control system :)
Shift also makes him run if you using keyboard for movement.
One thing that bugs me is combining items in the inventory. Invariably when you are stuck you start combining all the items you possess and it's such a slow meandering thing to do with the way they have set it up. Too many clicks required!
(solution : be more clever and never get stuck...)
Yes I agree with that. I'm sure it's been easier to combine items in previous Monkey Island games.
Completed it this morning, great work by Telltale. It really feels like a Monkey Island game although it's a shame they didn't get Earl Boen back to do LeChucks voice (not that there was anything wrong with Adam Harrington I guess).
I found one or two of the puzzles a little vague, at times the game really doesn't do much to guide you and instead hopes that you'll just randomly click anything of interest rather than think about what you're supposed to do (which is fun sometimes as it's where those quirky little Guybrush lines come from)
Really looking forward to the next episodes as they've set up series one with some great potential.

Seems to be strong suggestions this is coming out on XBLA so I think I'll wait.
have to say I'm loving this. Found the control system a little quirky, but no worse than mi4 and with the gfx up full it actually looks a lot better than the screenshots and videos kicking about.
Hopefully all this renewed interest will give lucasrts the kick up the arse to re-employ ron gilbert and get that official monkey island game made that everybody has been waiting for :)

Finished it now, it's GREAT. Story is good, puzzles are good (some vexed me), humour is great, voice acting is top notch, control system works very well and it feels like the Monkey Island of old. Bring me more!
Just tried the demo and played for 30 secs before the control system annoyed me too much. Absolutely horrific to be honest and it's put me off going anywhere near this now.

Sounds similar to the Wallace and Gromit one.. I like the IP and really wanted to enjoy the game, but the dog-slow game engine and annoying controls put me off playing completely.

the thing is, you can use it in pretty much the same way as MI4 (ie keys to control the character), and I don't hear people saying that they won't play that because of the control system

does anyone remember what time (GMT) the first episode came out? Im rather hoping i will be able to play this when i get home from work this evening...
Well it's a bit late to answer your question timely, but the first episode release had some issues to I think it was very late in the day for us here in the UK.
Last nights chapter came out around half seven.

I played chapter 1 for free thanks to their pirate giveaway and then had to lay down $30 to continue the story, they've really captured the feel of the Monkey Island games which is all you could wish for really. Completed chapter 1 yesterday and chapter 2 today and both were very enjoyable and made me laugh, which games rarely do.
Roll on September 29th.

It shouldn't be, my computer is 4 years old and it ran fine at 1650x1050.
Yeah the system requirements are pretty low:
64mb gfx, 512mb ram, 2ghz p4

yep, i have that, i'll try again with everything else turned off (maybe the virus scan thing was on)
Anyone still playing (and enjoying) these? I've really enjoyed them all so far, particularly the last two. Loved the map/jungle puzzle on the most recent.
LeftHandedGuitarist
13-11-2009, 23:09
Yes, really enjoying them. The 3rd is my favourite so far, an absolute joy from beginning to end with really innovative and fitting puzzles, but the way the 4th ended has left me desperate for the next!
I did download the free episode on pirate day and it's a lot better than the impression the demo gave me. They really should have made the demo longer.

All 5 episodes released now, and I finished the last one yesterday. Pure gaming brilliance, a very well thought out story and puzzles that were the perfect balance between clever and difficult. Voice acting for the main characters was top notch (I'm really glad they got Earl Boen back for LeChuck), not so impressed with all the minor characters though.
The only real downpoint that I could find was that the ending was very abrupt, but a small scene after the credits went some way to fixing that :)
I really hope there's more to come.

Just to let people know telltale have a 25% off promotional campaign making the full season of Tales $19.50 for those that opened an account for the free downloadable 1st chapter.
Anyone know when we should receive the DVD of this (if you signed up pre-release for the entire season?).

Anybody who buys the entire season through telltale gets access to the collectors dvd but pre-orders get a special ltd slip-case irrc. Should be any time soon now.
Any news whether this is coming to XBL?

Grabbed this today off Steam as it's a daily bargain (£8.95 for all the episodes).Played 20 or so minutes of the first episode and it seems OK. Not sure on the animation style of it and the controls suck but the humour is there and it's great that the three leads have the same voice actors from 1997's Curse of Monkey Island (extremely rare in a video game series).
Also worth noting that it's on PSN now as well. Why this hasn't appeared on XBLA is a mystery though.
The controls aren't that bad when you get used to it. What is stupid is getting used to it takes longer than the duration of the demo so I wrote the game off from that. Only reason I got into it is when they gave away episode 1.

The later episodes begin to approach the quality of classic LucasArts games, and you get used to the control scheme pretty quickly. Great bargain.

Just downloaded tales of MI on PSN, loving it so far although still on the first episode. Some nice puzzles and more polished than Sam n Max episode 1

This was on sale on Steam for £8.50 so I picked it up, not as good as their £3.50 sale last year but I missed that. I didn't have a pc when it originally came out but I do now so it is nice to play it!

I've given up with them. Currently on the mermaid one... think it's a bit crap really (like all of Telltale's games).
