Hope I've got these models right........
Got a Toshiba at present, but may be looking to update it to a different silver one. Been looking at these two, and would like to know some opinions regarding:

Picture & Sound quality (present player is great!)
Any problematic playback eg Robocop and similar discs
MP3/VCD handling
etc

Only need 1 scart socket, so as long as it has one and digital out for DTS, I'm happy, but anything else would be a bonus.

Been trying to garner information myself as i intend to buy one of the two in the next few days. It seems the Toshiba 210 will do everything that is needed and is £50 cheaper. Not sure about playing DVDrs though

Not something I predict myself playing (DVDr), but you never know......

I have a Toshiba 210e and i'm very pleased with the performance for the price. Great pic and not too shoddy at CD playback. Plays everything I throw at it.

Not too sure why you would want to go for the Pioneer 545 though. I think the 444 would be a more direct model comparison to the Tosh 210e. I think the only difference between the two Pioneer's is the 545 has two scart sockets. could be wrong though:D No doubt the Pionner appreciation brigade will surface soon to give their opinions.

I think the only thing to seperate them is the way they look, price and if you have component inputs on your TV because the Tosh can make use of them.

Mentioned the Pioneer as I've seen it mentioned in a few posts. I'm more inclined to go for the Toshiba as I already have one, but if anyone knows better, then I'm always open to suggestions....

Quite hard to find actual comparative review as many people don't own 2 machines :D

I have managed to find some more info

"Yes, definitely a good one, capable of playing DVD, DVDR, DVDRW,
DVD+R, DVD+RW, CDR, CDRW, VCD, SVCD, XVCD, XSVCD and MP3 discs."

Also, the 444 has a worse remote -- the 545's is a funky wee beastie with jog wheel. mini joystick for menu selection, and light-up buttons, and while I haven't actually used the 444's it's supposed to be fairly poor (or at least, very average). Of course, whether the remote is worth splashing out the extra cash or not is up to you...

Also note that the 545 has improved DACs for better CD playback quality .....

The 545 has the same DAC as the 444 but has additional Pioneer Legato technology to further improve CD playback sound.

Sorry to be pedantic but the DAC in both machines is very good, the 444 is by no means bad at CD playback.

Bet you're not really sorry :p

Fairy nuff though, you are of course correct :)

The 444 remote is truly awful.

Haven't used or seen the 545 one though.

What about mp3 playback though? Saw something about the Pioneer player not be able to handle long character names (ie 8 chars or so max.?)

I can recommend either one, really depends on taste - the 444 is a very good looking machine and handles discs like a dream. It's very quiet, too.
