Saw a trailer for this during Prison Break finale, looks like might be ok. Tom Hardy (Bronson) and other big names.
www.sky.com/thetake
Set in the East End of London, The Take is a gripping family drama set in the criminal underworld spanning 10 years from the height of Thatcherism to the birth of New Labour.
Screenwriter Neil Biswas (Bradford Riots, Second Generation, In a Land of Plenty) adapts Martina Cole's novel.
Synopsis:
Freddie Jackson is just out of prison. He's done his time, made the right connections and now he's ready to use them. His wife Jackie dreams of having her husband home but she's forgotten the rows and the girls Freddie can't leave alone. His younger cousin, Jimmy, dreams of making a name for himself on Freddie's coattails.
At first Freddie gets everything he ever wanted and Jimmy is taken along for the ride: a growing crime empire that gives them all the respect and money they've hungered for. But behind it all sits Ozzy - the legendary criminal godfather who manipulates Freddie and Jimmy's fates from behind the bars of his prison cell.
Bitter, resentful and increasingly unstable, Jackie sees her life crumble while her little sister Maggie's star rises. In love with Freddie's cousin Jimmy, Maggie is determined not to end up like her sister.
Freddie and Jackie watch Jimmy and Maggie achieve all the dreams that they themselves failed to realise: love, family, stability and respect.
Jealous resentment and an inability to control himself force Freddie to put both the business and family at risk. Torn between being loyal to a cousin he loves and being true to his own destiny, Jimmy is forced to decide between protecting Freddie or the life he has built with Maggie.
This is a powerful human drama about love, power, violence and betrayal.
I saw the trailer for this as well.
It looks quite good a gritty. I also saw 'Bronson' recently and just spotted that Tom Hardy was in this as well... looks slightly different - scar on his face?
Psycho
Have a feeling this is either going to be knock out good, or very bad.

Martina Cole novels are a real guilty pleasure of mine..total trash but very entertaining..athough the 'quality' has been dropping a bit of late and the stories are getting a bit boring...to the extent where I cant actually remember what the plot of this one is although I know Ive read it..
Have to agree with 'new' could be really good in the mold of something like 'Widows' but has potential to be awful too.....keeping fingers crossed as the cast looks pretty solid.

Thought this was very good first 2 parts of 4. Repeated on Sky2 tomorrow night with part 3 on next Wed.
Comparisons will be drawn to Ashes to Ashes, but definitely on the raw side compared to that.
forgot this was on, will try and catch it tonight, as i thought it looked good

Also caught the first couple of parts last night, thought it was pretty good with an excellent performance from Hardy.
Will be tuning in next week to see how it ends

Really enjoyed this. Superb acting! Can't wait to see next weeks finale!
I can't watch this becasue I don't have Sky 1 :(
Is there any way I can get to see it? Do Sky have a BBC iPlayer type of website?
Or will I have to wait for the DVD... or Blu-Ray?
Psycho

Damn. Just watched the first two parts and have wacked the 3rd on. The best programming Sky have ever made. Picards clone is rather a good actor.
Episode 3 - Only read if you have seen it
OH MY GOD!! Did not see that ending coming, thought he would take him away again like he did in ep2.
But excellent programme and it is the best thing that Sky have had made (themselves) i've seen. top notch so far
Anyone know how many episodes there will be?

Really, really good. I'm thinking would this have worked at a 8 or 13 parter? Some bit seemed to jump mid episode especially in the first ones then with no warning it was weeks later.
It could have but funding could be it. I have the book (2/3 years now) just have not got around to reading it so not sure how it compares as between 1 and 2 is a 5 year gap
I have seen the ads for this but did assume it was a bit 'It's A Right Ol' Cockney Barrel Of Monkeys' or something - a little bit of a plastic Lock, Stock if you will.
I might record it off the Sky Anytime thingy if it's not?

No "'It's A Right Ol' Cockney Barrel Of Monkeys' or something", there is very little humour and very distressing in one bit which I will leave you to find (actually two bits).
My OH doesn't like Lock Stock et al at all, but was loving this.

2 episodes down, loving it.
3rd lined up once the boy is asleep.
The lead is absolutely superb, and remind me a bit of Ray Winstone
Hardy looks like he's still carrying a bit of weight from Bronson. Great stuff, what a *******!
as usual i've missed the start of this, I've only caught 10 minutes of one episode. glad to hear its good as it did look good. I'll have to catch the repeats on the *ahem* usual sources

I wasn't inclined to watch Bronson, but I will do now.
P.S I liked him from Nemesis as well.

I take it you mean Sky One by usual sources as it is on tonight.
Just watched the first two, hadn't realised they were on Anytime. Will watch the 3rd tomorrow.
Excellent stuff so far, Hardy is fantastic in the lead role. Anyone thinking about watching, do so as you won't be dissapointed.
Best UK TV drama i've seen in many years, Sky are putting ITV and the Beeb to shame here. Attention to detail in the 80's is spot on

Am I the only one that thought this was crap?
Having read the book i was really looking forward to watching this but find there are just too many gaps. I know that usually these series are "Based on" the book but I just can't get into this at all.

That third episode was tough to watch when it came to the two key scenes with the kids. One scene reminded me of the James Bulger CCTV footage where the big kid was leading the small kid away. :(

Take has to be the best TV sky have ever been involved in making. Will have to get a Blu of it and watch it in one sitting. Tom Hardy has now become one of my "Actors to watch out for."
Thought the whole thing was excellent from start to finish. Hope it wins an award or two as it deserves too. Fantastic acting from all involved, with Hardy outstanding. Sky should be proud of this production.
Wish it was more than 4 episodes.
Just seen the last episode and really enjoyed it. As others have said its the best thing Sky have made.
I think it easy could have got an extra 2 episodes, anyone read the book? What bits were left out if any?

Missed th elast couple of minutes, either it finished late or my hard drive clock has gained time again. Didn't start til 3 mins in the hour by my recording and it ended with the two sisters talking in the kitchen, anymore scenes after that? Was wondering what happened to her husband.
Lady at work has read the book and said there's a load missed outand stuff in the wrong order and a different ending to the book too!

I wasnt to sure about the end but apart from that it was excellent. Might read the book now to see what the difference is.

Its on Anytime if you have that.
But if i can remember
She comes home and has a chat with Jimmy in the kitchen, then it goes to the prison where Ozzy is the the church shouting at a few people when one of them gets a wire and kills him (choke).
It goes back to Jimmy and Mags and asking if she knows where Jackie is, and Mags says no.
I cannot remember the line he said but it was along of the lines everyone's time will come and the look in Jimmys eye was that as soon as he knew where she and little Freddie were he was gonna find them and kill little Freddie.

Really enjoyed this from start to finish. Though Hardy was superb throughout, the supporting cast were also fantastic.
Kierston Wareing (Jackie) also appeared in the Oasis music video "The Importance Of Being Idle" Knew I had seen her somewhere.

just watched all 4 back to back - great stuff - great acting!
Me and the missus did the same last night (thanks to sky anytime), really enjoyed it although the ending was alittle flat, thought they could have done a bit more with it.....but it was certainly the best thing i have watched on tv for a very very long time:thumbs:
I noticed that this is now being advertised as being available on DVD, for those without Sky.
I enjoyed it and ended up watching all 4 back-to-back.
We caught up with this the other day and I was really surprised how good it was, well done to Sky on a quality piece of drama. Hardy was outstanding as Freddie and when I did an IMDB searched I was surprised just how many films and TV shows I've seen him in before. The only negatives were Kierston Wareing rather large upper lip and the ending which perhaps could have been a bit better. Has anyone read the book and if so was it the same?

Bloody loads left out.
Whilst I think Tom Hardy did a good job with the character, he's not a match on the character in the book.
Freddie is described as a big hulking figure that has a certain charisma about him. Good Looking, built like a brick out house and able to pull anything anywhere. The character in the tv series didn't have that. Likewise with Jimmy. Jacqui sounds more like waynetta slob and has a fearsome reputation. Maggie is probably the only character they got right.
As for storyline, they got most of the main partis in but there's alot of background information missing. As always I feel if you've seen the TV Series you'll love it, and only be blown away when you finally read the book. If however, like me, you read the book first, I think you're likely to be left a little disappointed.
Oh, the ending in the book is different too. Shame they didn't film the real ending and include that on the DVD.
