Do you have a Reciva (http://www.reciva.com/)-based internet radio (Tevion/AE/BT/Sanyo etc)? If so, I stumbled upon some pretty cool development on the software for these radio's.

If like mine (the Tevion 5404 from Aldi) your set has not been updated in ages, you may be missing out on some of the new features which Reciva are pushing out to the manufacturers who do bother to update their firmware.

The good thing about these sets is that they all use the same firmware, no matter or make or model, they just load a hardware-specific config file upon booting.

The Reciva firmware is actually a micro-linux variant named Familiar Linux which opens up a host of possibilities for third party development of the code.

Firstly, check this (http://sharpfin.zevv.nl/index.php/Radios) page for details specific to your radio. There is lots of info which success stories for individual models of Reciva-based radios.

Then go to this (http://sharpfin.zevv.nl/index.php/Enabling_Login) page to learn how to enable the http and telnet interface on the device. There is a test script which is run on the radio which enables you to get familiar with the process without making any changes. On most devices, this is confirmed by a message on the LCD display but on some they are unable to control the LCD device so you will get no feedback other than the radio rebooting (which is normal)

Once you have opened that up, check this (http://sharpfin.zevv.nl/index.php/Radios#Firmware_Release_Dates) page for a list of current firmware versions. I am running 257-a-865-a-213 which is the second to last latest firmware release available.

Next, read the info here (http://sharpfin.zevv.nl/index.php/Changing_Firmware) for instructions on loading the new firmware onto your device.

Finally, join the SharpFin (http://groups.google.com/group/sharpfin) group on Google Groups. From here, you can download an add-on for the web interface which adds a remote control allowing you to control your radio remotely (regardless of if it came with a physical remote or not) as well as enabling an FTP daemon on the device.

The later firmwares also have uPnP enabled by Reciva meaning you can use something like TwonkyMedia (http://www.twonkymedia.com) or Cidero (http://www.cidero.com) to push music files directly from a media server to the internet radio.

Thanks. Something I'd love to do but haven't got the guts! I've got the Tevion 5404 - I find the clock always loses time!

I bricked my Tevion yesterday, was entirely my own fault as I risked upgrading the firmware whilst the current one was unstable and as such the upgrade failed mid-way through. It's now an expensive FM radio.

To ease my sorrows I snapped the hand off somebody on eBay (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=44) selling the Revo RadioStation (an FM/DAB/DAB+/Internet) set for £50 brand new. No idea if the guy realised he'd massively under-valued the item as they are worth three times that from most retailers. It remains to be seen if it turns up.

EDIT:  It turned up, massive bargain! Very impressed with the quality, MUCH better than the Tevion (not difficult) and is so much faster connecting to streams.
