I'm a big fan of Monkey Island and would love to replay this.

On ebay is this

Monkey Island (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=44&url=http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/The-Secret-Of-Monkey-Island-Lucasarts-PC-CD-ROM_W0QQitemZ260412355715QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_PC_Video_Games_Video_Games_JS?hash=item260412355715&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1683%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A0%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50)

I didn't think there was a talkie version? Note the sticker on the box.

Ignore me.

But no, I'm sure there wasn't a voice track for the first. I'm sure I've read something about this being a myth, although that ebay version confuses me somewhat.

Edit # 4 I can't find anything at all about a talkie version anywhere. This version has me intrigued.

Edit #5 This is really bugging me now, I can't find evidence of a acknowledgement of a "full talkie" version of MI1 aside from a fan project to record the voices. The only thing I can think is the sticker is in error.

I think there was a talkie version. Not definite though as I had it on floppy disks (in fact I still have somewhere)

I'm pretty sure it did exist - I'm almost certain that the budget copy I bought when I first got a PC was had a voice track. I've lost all my old SCUMM games now though.

The speech module was a fan-developed addition. I don't recall any official release having speech, though perhaps the later 'budget label' release used it? Wasn't 'Kixx XL' Lucasarts budget label?

Yeah, I've only found references to a project to record voices and nothing for an official version.

Thing is, if there IS a talkie version, I'd rather play that than buy a normal version. I'm tempted to put a bid in on this one but I really do think the sticker is an error. It even says in the description it has full speach though. mmm

I'd save your money.
From CVG.com:

Much-loved LucasArts adventure game, The Secret of Monkey Island, is coming to Xbox Live Arcade, it's been revealed via a rating.

A listing for the "Special Edition" Xbox 360 re-release has appeared on the German USK Rating Board - and the German's never lie.

The 1990 adventure game - which was helmed by, among others, Mr. Tim Schafer - follows the story of wannabe pirate Guybrush Threepwood as he adventures through the crazy world of skull and crossbones.

We're expecting HD visuals and plenty of nostalgia. Expect more at E3.

EDIT: oop, just spotted the other thread on this, hoho

I remember seeing that same Kixx release in a shop years ago, thinking it would be awesome to have it on CD with speech (I only had the 3.5" disk version), but never buying it. Pretty sure it's official.

I bought this exact version when it came out many, many years ago and was excited at the prospect of hearing a full talking soundtrack. It didn't have one though, it is enhanced with CD quality music but a mistake must have been made on the label with regard to the voices. I took it back to the shop for a refund which they gladly gave me as it was not as advertised. As far as I know there is no "talkie" version of MI1 or 2.

There has never been a talkie version of the original Monkey Island or Monkey Island 2. There is a fan project to do it, but nothing official. The CD-ROM release of Monkey Island 1 did have a CD-audio soundtrack for the music and enhanced graphics.

If anyone does bid on this version out of curiosity, do post on here so that we don't all inflate the price :)

No talkie versions of MI 1 or 2 were ever done, AFAIK. First one to have speech was 3.

Hmm are you sure? I have the white label double game set on cd-rom and im sure it has speech (for MI2 at least).

Come to think of it, maybe i'm getting confused with the Indy double pack I also had. I'm positive Fate of Atlantis had speech.

edit: Looking here http://ntsc-uk.domino.org/archive/index.php/t-50791.html it seems there was just CD audio.

I have the double set on CD and it doesn't have speech on either (just the enhanced music and graphics). Indy was definitely released with speech though.

Seriously, guys. Monkey Island 1 and 2: NEVER had any speech. I'm a classic LucasArts nut.

I remember they had an offer for Sam & Max where you sent the floppy version to the company and they sent back the talkie cd-rom version. Best thing I ever done, the songs were hilarious.

It's hard to believe now that there was a time where CD-ROM drives and soundcards were a luxury in a PC.

I remember as a teenager spending somewhere between £50 and £100 on my first Soundblaster card...... mainly so I could make two noises at the same time.... 2600 and 2400 Hz.... paid for itself quickly ;)

You can get the remake of this on Steam, now - it has re-worked graphics and voice acting etc...

Not for the purists, though ;)

Oh, and DOTT is my all time favourite as well.
