No experience with the HTC Magic, but years of experience of HTC in general and other different brands of WinMob phones, and all I can say is you will be disappointed. I revisited recently with the Samsung Omnia and WinMob hadn't moved on much in terms of usability since I started with WinMob 2003.
If you simply need the ability to edit/create/view Microsoft Office (Excel/Word) files then may I suggest QuickOffice Pro (http://www.quickoffice.com/). This can edit DOC(X), XLS(X) and PPT files on Symbian phones and costs a lot less than a new phone ($19.99 currently).
I use it on my N95-8GB and find it very intuitive despite the limitations of the N95's screen size).
I have the Magic. It doesn't run windows, it is an android phone. I can't answer the question about it's ability to handle word documents, but there is a large, and growing, apps market and there may be something on there which enables that.
I chose the phone because of its browsing capabilities and haven't benn disappointed so far.

In that case, The HTC Magic has the same software available for Android as I recommended for the N95 - it's cheaper too at $9.99.

Just been in to vodafone shop to look at HTC magic looks good but its only in white and looks wrong for a bloke.
Might have to be the N96.
will keep an eye on the other thread about the N95 Upgrade and see what comes from that.
Thanks for the help
