If you are gonna get the sopranos on dvd get the region 1 sets. The picture is good and is anamorphic 16:9 where as the region 2 is 4:3.

have r2/r4. The quality is inferior to r1 (cheap at absound.ca) but it is very cheap (about £35) and no customs!

....the Region 2 discs are 1:77:1, which is 16x9, which, to all intents and purposes, is widescreen...so sorry Tequila, but you're wrong on that count.

I have the First series on R1 and the second on R2, picture quality on R2 is no worse than that of R1, while the sound on the first 2 episodes of series 2 on R2 are dolby2.0, the remaining episodes have 5.1 soundtracks. Having said that, the you hardly notice the first 2 episodes are dolby2.0 as the soundtrack does'nt make that much use of the surrounds or the LFE track that often anyway.

Actually season 1 is 1.33:1 or 4:3 on Region 2 but season 2 was indeed widescreen.

Region 1 is the only region to have season 1 in widescreen I believe.

....having Season1 in R1 i was unaware of Season1 R2 being 1:33:1...I stand corrected and half humbly apologise to Tequila ( well I was half right).:D

Get R1. Better extras, stunning packaging, both in Widescreen. Remember there are three more series to come eventually so I'm sure R2 will mess it up again.

Yep, don't touch anything but the region one sets with a bargepole. Season 1's glaring flaws have already been highlighted, but to state them again in full: 4:3 picture which isn't even pan & scam, just the sides snipped off; stereo sound instread of dolby 5.1; and jack squat in the way of extras. This has got to be one of the single worst examples of region 2 being ****** on from a vast height -- Warner seem to have gone out of their way to treat the fans like something a dog dropped.

This also seems a good point to lay into "Vince Carrozza", the writer of this (http://www.dvd.net.au/main.shtml) truly pathetic excuse for a review. It's written in a deeply unfunny and highly annoying mock-Mafioso style, while telling you little of any use whatsoever about the set itself, and on the subject of the picture says:

"Well, look at it this way, on television in Australia the show is broadcast in stereo with a fullscreen (probably pan & scan) image and I don’t hear anyone bitchin about it, and I know a lot of people who watch the show and will buy the series on dvd. I personally would prefer the proper widescreen image, but I don’t believe we’re really missing out on anything in this case, so let’s move on, shall we?" Yes, but they're not shelling out rather a lot of cash to own the series permanately are they; and it's pretty much a no-brainer they're gonna watch it full-frame if that's the only option open. But it isn't here, and I can tell you the framing makes a helluva lot of difference, plain and simple.

It goes on in utter dickheadery of a similar vein, but I shall refrain from wasting any more screen space with the author's deranged ramblings. Also see the season 2 review (http://www.dvd.net.au/main.shtml) for yet more evidence of why I consider Mr Carrozza to be a complete prick. (He actually swears at anyone reading who isn't satisfied with the lack of extras in language I won't repeat here.) Needless to say, the author misses the point quite spectacuarly, and should never be allowed near a DVD review site again, lest there be the slighetest possibility of him influencing someone's purchase.

The region 1 season 1 set has an excellent 80 minute long interview with David Chase (recorded in the Sopranos' kitchen of all places!), and a commentary with the pilot. Season 2 has 4 great commentaries by various episodes' directors; not such a dramatic improvement, but still definately worth paying out for I'd say.

After reading that review i can see what you mean, the sopranos style review DOESN'T WORK and isn't very informative

You're also right from the point of view that the prat doesnt exactly have to fork out quite a lot of dosh for it.

After reading some other reviews it seems like region 1 is definitely the way to go, i always thought region 1 was full frame -obviously i was wrong!

For a good comparison review of The Sopranos check out Neils review over at BulletsnBabes - pretty damn good review i must say and is very informative

Does anyone know if the R1 Season 2 packaging is the same style as R1 Season 1?

Yeah - S1 is mainly red with a little black and S2 is mainly black with a little red (I think; can't check as I'm at work, but I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong!).

Oh, and both come in 'book style' packaging with a bookmark.
